For the last few days, I have soloed my way through the Sunlit Hands, the first adventure (29 pages, free/pay what you want at DriveThruRPG). This fun adventure was designed for the Cypher System Rulebook. I used the 2015 edition (418 pages, on sale, same place) which I did use. I created my six characters on fastcharacterDOTcom (this is so awesome). For my solo engine, I used a yes/maybe/no oracle along with the Bing AI Copilot. So, something is causing a businessman in Larkham , a town within the frigid Venthan Range, to have the worst luck imaginable. He thinks it’s a ghost. The PCs talk to him and then examine the basement. They quickly decide that a glowing love potion is the cause of the problem.

The PCs stand in a circle facing each other. Stacey drinks it. She becomes attracted to Byron and they kiss for a few minutes. They are a bit embarrassed when the effect of the potion wears off. However, Stacey now has a stomach ache (the potion had a small shard in it). She complains to the businessman...See more

It would really be great to see a mention of how the 2015 edition is different from the current version of the game here https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/287918/Cypher-System-Rulebook-FREE-PREVIEW

Chapter 1 of the free preview explains exactly that: the rules are the same, they reorganized the presentation to be easier to use as a generic system and added a few extensions onto the system. Details, as said, in the free preview you linked, page 4.

The Cypher System simple put is where Elegance meets simplicity. The mechanic are designed to enahnce the narrative. GM's don't have to worry about rolling dice which frees up time for story. I've been gaming for over 40 years and this system has brought that child like anticipation every time I get ready to touch one of these books. I can't wait to see what's next. This game is nuanced brilliantly.

I have been purchasing many systems to find the right system for my supers game, wow, I just read the sample file and I downloaded the game right away. I should have downloaded this game first. Just in the span of 4 pages I understood the mechanics of the game, and its quick, something I have been looking for in a game for a long time. When it comes to my rules lite games, this is my definite go to. I have been reading thru fate, strands of fate, vampire the masquerade, d6 , and other systems trying to hammer down my go to system for a rules lite game. For me, its this one. If I were to run a story based game, this is the system of choice for me. Its simple, its fast, but more importantly, its expandable, with many chapters on how to use or make your own rules for the game. I plan on transferring the ideas from white wolf and d6 into this system to build my own specialized supers games and psion based games. Also, from what I have read in the description of the Strange, there are defined rules for world jumping...See more

Will ever there be an official Errata/update or rules clarification forum?

Sorry, but I just find Numenera to be crap. Why on Earth would you decide on a difficulty from 1 to 10, only to have to triple it right away for the real target? What's the point? Sure, the game has a wonderful background; very scientific and fantastical at the same time, but I personally just can't over that difficulty number nonsense.

It is just far easier to measure difficulty from 1 to 10 than from 3 to 30. This is a very small hurdle. You miss on one of the best systems out there! Give it a try - it might surprise you! I really had to play to ''get'' the system.

Why you'd call a system "crap" based on one mechanic is beyond me. Also, if you think about it for a moment, it's much easier to cogitate "Difficulty 6 of 10", for example, than it is "Difficulty 18 of 30". Thus, it's easier for GMs to assign, and for players to assess, a difficulty on a 1-10 scale and convert the target number.

I say this as someone who owns Numenera but doesn't much like it.

Andrew and Jimmy, you're both right. I was out of line, and I went too far based on very little research. I am going to give it a second look. I've been playing long enough to be able to "get over myself" and give this a fresh look not based on prejudices.

Well said, Timothy. Not that I think I had some kind of apology coming or something, or that I'm sure I'm right -- simply kudos for setting a good example of an open mind.

For someone who already owns The Strange and many of the PDF supplements, how much new information is there in the Cypher System Rulebook?

There are a few more character types (like vector, nano, spinner, etc ), descriptors, tables mapping world type to focus, guides on how to build worlds.
Think of it more like a bundle of strange + strange options + numenera + numenera options + some more options. Added value is somewhat limited, but it's practical. with a nice hyperlink model

Where the two differ mechanically in big ways
1. The addition of the Explorer Type (from Numenera), so you have 4 base types.
2. Change to how Armor works (instead of draining Speed pool)
3. Removal of currency, using an abstract purchasing system.
4. The addition of "flavors" which layer with Types (which really helps you hone in on the tone of your own game).
5. Rules for using Cypher for most any Genre. (The horror ones would work great in the Strange)

I understand that the system is geared for exploration over combat. But I was wondering just how gritty this system can get in combat?

The Cypher System is a great tool for building YOUR game. However I was thinking that The Cypher System would also be great for building recursions in The Strange. If you are familiar with TS you know what I mean.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
