Exalted 3rd Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

This is the tale of a forgotten age before the seas were bent, when the world was flat and floated atop a sea of chaos. This is the tale of a decadent empire raised up on the bones of the fallen Golden Age, whose splendor it faintly echoed but could not match. This is a tale of primal frontiers, of the restless dead, of jeweled cities ruled openly by spirits in defiance of Heaven’s law. This is a tale of glorious heroes blessed by the gods, and of their passions and the wars they waged in the final era of legends.

This is your tale. This is Exalted. What legends will they tell of your deeds?

Exalted 3rd Edition depicts both a revitalized and expanded Creation, and the triumphant return of the Solar Exalted—but whether their rebirth will herald the salvation or destruction of the world, none can say. The system redesign takes the best parts of the previous editions and streamlines the mechanics for maximum playability.

EX3

Exalted 3rd Edition includes:

  • New Fiction - Read a new tale by original Exalted developer and author Geoff Grabowski.
  • New Artwork – See the Realm in a new light with stunning artwork by both new and classic Exalted artists working under the direction of Maria Cabardo.
  • Expanded Locales – Expand your campaigns with a detailed overview of the sprawling and decadent Second Age of Man. In addition to classic locales such as Chiaroscuro and Nexus, find many new locations not detailed in previous editions, from the treacherous intrigues of Port Calin to the proud warriors of the frigid plains and forests of Medo, held in check only by the iron hand of the Realm.
  • Intrigue and Mystery – Discover a revitalized Realm, still standing at the brink of civil war, but more dangerous than ever before; and the Lunar dominions which harry its borders, seeking redress for ancient crimes while pursuing modern ambitions.
  • Expanded Character Creation – Create and play Solar Exalted characters and compelling mortal heroes with more information and fleshed out details.
  • Combat System – Fight with a new cinematic combat engine, primed to deliver dynamic, exciting, and easily resolved battles between heroes, gods, and armies.
  • Charms – Explore a vibrant new Charm set encompassing both classic Solar powers from previous editions and all-new powers to shift the course of Creation.
  • ...and much, much more!

The East

Note on the Print Editions: Standard Color uses a different printing process than Premium Color. This usually means the colors are less vivid, but it also means the price drops a bit per page in the production process.

As usual for this title, I love the setting. The backstory, lore, whole bit is just fantastic. The system... uh.. yeah. Unnecessarily complex, with far too many 'options' for each and everything you want to do. Charms are an absolute mess, as is martial arts and my god.. combos. Combos went from confusing, to irritating, to completely borked in this version.

I really wish they would take a much simpler tack with the system side of it. Like... take a page from Savage Worlds (or the whole system as it works and handles added or subtracted stuff with ease) and re-do it with those rules, cause these rules? um..

Suck.

There are no defined combos in this edition, they're not a thing that characters purchase or players need to spend any time thinking about.

People differ in their tastes, but I've run a about a dozen games of 3e and we've found the rules pretty smooth and as engaging or moreso than any other game I've played. (But to be fair, I find playing Savage worlds like chewing cardboard, it somehow cranks up the intensity of blandness.)

The one I have is amazing. But it's only been used in a dozen sessions and a lot of GM flipping. Might be different with different groups. Could be the current bindery being used, but if it starts falling apart within a reasonable time from when you get it - reach out to Drivethrurpg and talk to them about getting a replacement. Their customer service team is pretty top notch.

Standard vs. Premium makes no difference to the quality of binding. The difference in price is largely to do with the grade of paper (I believe Standard is mildly courser) and the quality of coloration (premium prints have more vivid color).

In my experience, it's wise to do some tactical reinforcement on any big print-on-demand product. This generally includes using clear book tape to reinforce the connection between the inner text and manuscript, wrapping the corners in that same clear book tape (it's nigh invisible, and does a lot to prevent fraying at the corners), and if you're very careful, running a strip of clear fabric tape up the interior of the spine to reinforce the glue binding. It's not easy, but it will greatly reinforce the lifespan of the book.

I had Exalted 2nd Edition core book, but sadly I lost most of my RPG books. I have been thinking of getting it again, but noticed there is a 3rd edition.

I have no much interest in the new lore, so, mechanically speaking, is it much different 2nd vs 3rd edition or is it minimal and it's mostly about the lore updates?

It is quite different from 2nd, the combat is much better in my opinion but essentially all perfect effects have been dropped. Social combat is gone and replaced with a different social system and crafting has been changed massively. Overall while I like it better it is not particularly similar to 2nd.

Edit: Where is my verified purchase icon at?

Stick with 2nd.
The bad? Social combat is gone, brawl and martial arts have been split (for some stupid reason), unneeded and unwanted NWoD style mechanics have been forced in, unwanted and/or unneeded Exalted types crammed in where it didn't need to be (Exigents and Liminals DID NOT NEED TO BE ADDED), all the charms have been completely overhauled (not all for the better, looking at you Craft), Castes are unrecognizable, experience points are all different... in short, they broke it completely.

The good? Not much. New places on the maps are nice, some more lore to pad out the bloated mess it was.

The ugly? Just stick with 2nd + Errata. Much better.

But I'm still waiting on 3e books i will need to see if will like it or not.
Corebook for basic rules. Check.
Lunar book for best Exalted type. I believe its a check now.
Dragon Blooded. Check. Need to buy it still.
Abyssals. Not yet. Still waiting.
Alchemicals. Not yet. Still waiting.

Social Combat being gone is a GOOD thing. The social influence system is so much better and easier to implement while still retaining everything important about what Social Combat offered.

Martial Arts being sectioned off as a unique ability is something that was clearly necessary as early as 1st edition, and 2E's attempt to integrate Martial Arts and Brawl into a single ability was unbalanced and convoluted. Exigents adds value to the game and setting as a whole, while Liminals help to Keep Creation Wierd in a way that perfectly fits certain niche stories. Castes are entirely recognizable, while being somewhat more flexible. Experience points are expanded, but not honestly changed all that much.

2E and its errata is a mess. Ex3 is a clear upgrade. Judging by the nature of your complaints, I'm not convinced you've even looked at the text. That verified purchase icon is absent for a reason.

So does this book only discuss making Solar Exalted? So no Sidreal, Abyssal or most importantly Autochtonian? :'(. Is there a release shedule somewhere (apart from them not making any release dates I'd love to know their plans atleast).

Its for Solar Exalted, the Alchemicals will get their own book.

At this point, you can't trust any release schedule Onyx Path publishes. This book was supposed to release in October 2013 according to the Kickstarter. It came out last year and some of the backers are just barely getting their copy in the mail. Onyx Path has continued making excuses for months saying that the books were "almost" done but the truth is they weren't.

So far the only good to come in recent months is that they started hiring new writers to get on the team, but who knows how long it will take for the new writers to get the work done and out for publication. It could be another year or two before Arms of the Chosen is actually released. We might see the Dragon Blooded in 2019 if the current pattern continues.

Paradox Interactive recently purchased White Wolf and now owns the IPs, but from what they've shown their primary interest is Vampire the Masquerade and Chronicles of Darkness....See more

I have a question for anyone who has bought the physical edition of the core book.

How is the book holding up? 600 pages is a lot of pages and I have bought a few other large RPG books and have them fall apart because of poor quality.

I love the game but I don't want to buy a book only to have it fall apart with in a week or two....

I Purchased the Premium Heavyweight version and quite like it. I typically keep good care of my books so they tend to stay is good shape. I've had the book for just over 9 months and haven't had any problems with it falling apart. The Corners of the cover are curling in a bit from transit but nothing more than that.

My Premium Heavyweight came apart tonight, binding's coming completely off from the back cover side. I picked it up last May and it's been barely used - we only had it for 4 or 5 sessions when I first bought it, and then my group's been using it again over the last 3 Fridays. Besides some light reading outside that, it's been sitting (not standing) on my bookshelf that whole time.

I doubt I'll be replacing it, way too expensive for a book that size with standard binding (imho). Have the same concerns about my M20 copy, but thankfully the group's had zero interest in playing that since I bought it :P

This product page sells a book to people who already know Exalted. But for someone who is new to the game their is nothing to learn here. I was curious to find out what exactly the game and its system are about but it basically only talks about how it's different from previous editions about which I also don't know anything.

On this, I agree. This was written to sell purchasers of old editions on the new one. For someone that knows nothing of exalted, what do you need to know?

The setting is whatever the Storyteller needs it to be. It has a mixture of traditional western and eastern styles, but lends itself more heavily toward eastern. You have a heavy emphasis on Martial Arts in the setting, so if you dig Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee style movies this will be a plus for you.

Unlike other game systems, Exalted is essentially "Class-less". Your choice for Caste can affect XP costs for raising traits but there are essentially no penalties for buying skills out of your caste or profession. You can develop your character however you see fit. Experience points are nothing like they are in D&D or Pathfinder. You get a small amount each game session and get to spend those points to upgrade and develop your character.

Exalted is a Story-driven system. It can be used for dungeon...See more

Fair warning to people looking at this game... While it is excellent (seriously, I gave it a five star review for a reason), having gotten it in hand... it's huge. Make room on your shelf, then go back and make more, because however big you're thinking, it's not big enough. It is without contest physically the thickest RPG I own. Thicker than the Mage: the Awakening core rulebook. Thicker than the Pathfinder core book. Thicker than Vampire: the Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition. It is somewhere between three and four inches thick, and at least a third of that is just the Charms chapter. Consider yourselves warned.

And you will find that a book that thick, with a glued spine, will see the spine fail very quickly. My two (2) mage POD failed just leafing through them. The .pdf is great, but these THICK print on demand books are a let down.

Looking at reference images of the Ptolus core, Ptolus looks perhaps a quarter of an inch thinner. It's a marginal thing.

There's plenty of fluff (some of which is new to this edition; a number of locations from previous editions are not discussed in the core book, in favor of filling in some of the empty space), but the Charms chapter alone tips the weight of the crunch heavily on the winning side. Like I mentioned, the charm crunch takes a third of the book.

I had that problem with both (the original and replacement) of my Mage 20th POD. I got a refund after giving up. These binding is simply TOO POOR for such a thick book. The pages are glued in and not sewn in. This is the biggest problem I have seen with print on demand.

Full size preview isn't working, so I can't really "see" what the book looks like. Plus, giving just the first 13 pages, nine of which are a story, is NOT helpful. Show something NEW and INTERESTING, not just a quick (and super lazy) cut of the first little bit of the .pdf.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
