Scion Second Edition Book One: Origin

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

You are the child of a God, born to the magic of yesterday and the promise of tomorrow. You live in a World of myth, where every ancient story is true. Your ancient enemies, the Titans, stir in their prison beneath the lands of the dead. Their spawn issues forth from lands of myth, and the specter of war falls across the heavens. In this age of turmoil, you seize your birthrights and feel the call of your blood.

Find your destiny. Live the myth. Embrace your Fate.

Scion is a game about Gods and humanity, and everything in between. It’s a game about mythic Deeds and the reasons people talk about those mythic Deeds. Scion: Origin details the Scions when they’re still (mostly) human, before the Visitation that introduces them to the divine World — they’re exceptional humans, perhaps, blessed with luck and skill or cursed with ill fortune and strange trials in their lives, but humans nonetheless.

This book includes:

  • The core rules and character-creation information for Scion Second Edition, powered by the Storypath system.
  • An in-depth look at the basic setting of Scion (called the World).
  • A list of the major players — the Gods, Titans, and Legendary creatures that comprise the setting.
  • Storyguide advice on running games for pre-Visitation Scions.

Note: The PDF and Hardcover versions of this book have been updated in April 2025. That update includes:

  • Correct Purviews for over 15 Gods
  • Amended Attribute names where necessary
  • Made original errata sheet changes

Scion Second Edition Player's Guide: Saints & Monsters

Scion Second Edition Player's Guide: Saints & Monsters

There is more to The World than the children of the Gods — more than Heroes and Demigods. Legends speak of stranger things; of mortals who challenge the very Gods themselves, or who see Fate’s invisible workings laid bare; of creatures of every kith and kind who still dwell, here and there, alongside humanity; of sorcerers who tamper with things they should not, tempting the ire of the Gods with their hubris; and of the children of the Titans, whose inhuman ichor burns away at their very humanity.

What tales will you tell of such wonders?

Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero are required to use this book, although Scion: Demigod and Mysteries of the World are useful additions.

Scion Player’s Guide — Saints & Monsters contains:

  • Two new Callings: Outsider and Shepherd!
  • Expanded rules for playing Saints, Prophets, and Denizens!
  • Full rules for playing Sorcerers and Titanic Scions!
  • Edges, a new character creation system, and new takes on the Storypath system!

So I was reviewing the differences between the original 2019 PDF and the new Revised PDF, and I noticed that something that had been corrected in the 2019 PDF has been, basically uncorrected in the Revised PDF.

On page 97, in the bottom right “Character Creation Example” sidebar, there are three instances of the word “Reason” where the word “Intellect” should be substituted. This mistake is in the physical book, but was fixed in the 2019 PDF, however, those three instances of the word “Intellect” have been switched back to “Reason” in the Revised PDF.

Also, a minor detail that was not fully fixed in the 2019 PDF is still not corrected in the Revised PDF. On page 167, under “Adjusting Supernatural Origin Paths” the second to last line states: “… and two the Satyr Path…” But according to the errata (and standard grammar) it should say: “… and two to the Satyr Path…”

--- I just noticed another strange mistake, on page 71, in the header at the bottom right “Action-Adventure” for some reason in the Revised PDF, the hyphen is not in the same font as the rest of the header. Unlike in the 2019 PDF, where it matches the rest of the header.

--- Another case where the Revised PDF reverted to using “Reason” instead of “Intellect” is on Page 73 in the “Chases” section. In the third paragraph under the “Chases” header, there is a sentences that states: “Mazes and other puzzles are the place for Intellect, …” in the 2019 PDF, but in the Revised PDF it’s been changed back to “Reason.”

--- There are two other cases of mismatched fonts on Page 118. In the header “Modifiers to Attack / Defense Actions” the slash is not the same font as the text. The same thing occurs in the header just below: “On The Ground / Standing Up.”

--- Another case of mismatched slash is on Page 153 in the header: “How Many Qualities...See more

Good morning, a question about physical editions in general, what would the finish of a Hardcover Standar and Premio look like? Could you put some sample images (not necessarily of this book)? It's the first time I would buy a physical edition here and I would like to know if it would look the same as if I went to a bookstore to buy it or how it would be. Thanks

Hello! I'm looking to purchase the PDF and Hardcover of both Origins and Hero, but need a question answered first. What is the difference between the "Premium" hardcover and the "Standard" hardcover? Glossiness? Color saturation? What would you consider the 1E hardbacks?

Thank you!

The primary difference between Standard Color Heavyweight and Premium Color Heavyweight books is the ink and process in which the books are printed.

Standard Heavyweight Color uses inkjet technology. This option offers lower cost but the colors won't be as sharp or bright as a Premium Color book.

Premium Heavyweight Color uses a digital offset press. This option offers superior color quality but is more expensive to produce.

Even if it does, the final PDF has a lot more mistakes than what is actually listed in the Errata. So I'd wait a while if I were you.

Does this version have all the errata applied to it or is it still the pre-errata version from a couple months ago?

Is this only available as a PoD? I thought Onyx Path said they would be printing Scion as an offset book and putting it into distribution like Pugmire.

The owner of my FLGS said that it was being printed and that he could order it; although he wouldn't be unless specifically requested since he has beef with Onyx Path.

Just like Pugmire, Monarchies of Mau, Cavaliers of Mars, the Scarred Lands Players Guide, and Changeling: the Lost 2nd Edition the Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero books have been released in multiple formats (PDF, PoD, Offset for distribution). We're not going to promote those other options on a DriveThruRPG page however.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
