100 Rumours to Hear in the Space Port Bar

When in the space port bar, or any other suitable location, characters may overhear or come across rumours and bits of gossip, whether they are deliberately looking for them or as a side effect of searching for information. This supplement has 100 different rumours that characters could hear in such a case. Whether or not a particular rumour is true is up to the GameMaster and these rumours can be used as red herrings, background gossip or as a source of potential adventure hooks.

Here are some sample results:

  • Strange things have been seen drifting in the void between the stars. Those who have seen them have described them as being sort of alive, yet also sort of not. Odd, hybrid things that seem to straddle the line between lifeform and construction, things that defy rational description, and are hard even to see or scan.
  • The asteroid belt of a nearby system did not form the usual way. Evidence has been found of massive weapon strikes and some remains of life and civilisation on a few of the bits of debris, although most such are long gone. It looks like the belt was a planet that was deliberately destroyed. Killing everyone and everything on a planet is one thing; having the ability to turn an entire planet into rubble is another thing entirely. And a worrying thing at that, should anyone discover how it was done.
  • The cloud mining station in the upper reaches of the gas giant’s atmosphere has dropped out of contact. Scanners show that it has also descended deeper into the atmosphere, and doesn’t look to be under control. If the descent isn’t halted soon, the station will go too deeply into the atmosphere and be destroyed, so there are plans to despatch a ship to find out what has happened.
  • The freighter Ser Olias is currently in dock, and the captain is looking for a new crew. Oddly, the previous crew does not appear to have left the freighter after it docked. Which is leading to questions as to what happened to them, where they are and just why the captain needs everyone on his crew replacing. These rumours are causing a dearth of takers for the position; potential crew think that there is something a bit off about the situation.
  • The local council is looking for people who can take care of themselves who also have a ship to go and inspect a colony of theirs that recently dropped completely out of contact. Nothing has been heard from the colony, nor from any of the ships that should have been returning from there. The council is worried the colony could have fallen prey to an attack of some type.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
