Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game Second Edition

Welcome to Christmas in July! In celebration, this digital title has been marked down by up to 40%! For more of Santa's savings, visit our Christmas in July sale page.

The award-winning Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game has regenerated into a new Second Edition that is faster, easier, and even more exciting. This book presents all the rules and background you need to voyage across space and time with the Doctor, or as new characters experiencing brand new epic adventures.

This core rulebook includes:

  • Complete character creation rules to allow you to bring to life a new time travelling adventurer to explore space and time aboard the TARDIS. They could be companions to the Doctor, or a new Time Lord of your own creation, Time Agents, or investigators and defenders of planet Earth.
  • The complete revised rules for playing Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game. The new and updated version of the popular Vortex system is completely compatible with the First Edition of the game. Second Edition makes gameplay faster, easier, and quicker to learn, while keeping all of the dramatic action you’d expect from an episode of Doctor Who.
  • Advice for Gamemasters, new and old, on how to make the experience of Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game feel like you’re living an episode of the TV series, as well as how to create exciting storylines and continuing campaigns.
  • Revised rules for creating your group’s own TARDIS, or other time travel device to allow them to adventure from the dawn of history to the very ends of the Universe.
  • An expansive look at the history of the Universe, detailing many of the aliens and creatures the Doctor has encountered across space and time.
  • Pregenerated character sheets for the Doctor and her companions, ready to play straight away!

I love the Doctor Who RPG, but this character creation post really sells me on the advantages of the 2nd Edition over the 1st Edition.

There seems to be a small error in the blank character sheet at the back of the CRB, the portrait space's lines don't cutoff like they do on the pregens and the CRB before the errata and instead overlap with the story point box. This doesn't appear to have happened on the separately downloadable blank character sheet.

Are there any plans to update the PDF with internal links? I find it difficult to use on a screen without these.

Hi Q7,
Is this regeneration compatible rule system with the 1st to 12th Dr's Sourcebooks and expansions from the previous?

Not C7, and two years later, but yes, it's compatible with the 1e. The big difference is that they've dropped Traits in favour of freeform Distinctions, which function similarly but aren't as numerous as Traits were.

Odd, the update appears to have added a typo to the table of contents. Saying chapter on instead of chapter one.

The tweaks to Experienced from being XP tied to just direct amounts of attributes/skills is a good change to have.

Do we know if there is a new Starter adventure with this rules update, or is it still Arrowdown?

Hi Michael, our new starter adventure is called Doctor Who and the Einstein Engine and released shortly after this title went live!

You can find it here:

I'm disappointed to see that the back cover is missing from the pdf. Would it be possible for you to update the file to correct this omission.

Would it be possible to get a preview that is more than just character sheets?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
