Castles & Crusades Players Handbook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Castles & Crusades is a fantasy table top role playing game that is easy to learn, easy to play, and allows you a wide range of customization. With our easy-to-learn attribute-based rules system players choose among 13 archetypal character classes and 7 races with which create their characters. Spells, equipment, fast-paced combat rules, and all essential information needed to play a game of Castles & Crusades are in the Players Handbook.

What you Find In the PHBgnomes

The RPG: In the first, we explain the tools you will need to play and how to play a game of Castles & Crusades. We explain the basics of the attribute check system, the Siege Engine, and touch on attribute modifiers and attribute checks.

The Classes: In this second section the PHB delves into the classes. From the fighter to the Wizard, it presents 13 classes to choose from, as well as multi-classing and class and a half options. Each class description includes all the relevant info from skills to weapons they use. Artists Peter Bradley and Zoe DeVos bring each class alive depicting both male and female versions of the class. (check out the Adventurer's Backpack for more classes.)

The Races: Expand your character with one of seven races. You can choose from seven different races: human, elf, dwarf, halfling, half-elf, gnome, and half-orc. Each unique race includes all the necessary info to bring them to life. As with the classes above, our art team depicts both male and female versions!

Completing the Character: Here the Players Handbook delves into names, how to create background and personality, alignment, equipment, and other necessary details to help you bring the character you want to play to the table.

Magic: Magic unleashes a whole new dimension of play at the table top and C&C has plenty of it. Here we explore the four major spellcasters, cleric, druid, wizard, and illusionist, how they cast spells, and the spells they cast. From the cleric’s spiritual weapon to the illusionists' healing ability, it is all here.

Spell Descriptions: The caster takes hold of hundreds of spells that allow them countless opportunities to stand before the foul demons so that none can pass!

The Castle Keeper & the Game: This section expands upon the Siege Engine and how to play using attribute checks. It is simple, extremely versatile, and allows for immediate resolution of conflict for expanded story development. All of this is covered as well as how to role play, what you need, expectations and a plethora of examples on how to use the attribute check system. (Don’t miss the Castle Keepers Guide for more optional rules and a mountain of material on how to play!)

Combat: Here the book explores the painless to learn combat system. It includes how to begin and run fights, the necessary stats and rolls, surprise, initiative, non-lethal combat, melee and ranged, unarmed, situational modifiers, armor class, maneuvers, hit points, and damage.

Turning Undead: The cleric and paladin both have special abilities when it comes to controlling or destroying the undead. All that is covered here.

Rewards: How to award treasure and experience points, allowing the characters and the game to advance, literally to the next level.

Movement, Spell Resistance, Languages, Vision & Time: All of these sections discuss the various aspects of the game that come into play. Each is dealt with and explained, making deployment at the table fast and easy.

Example of Play: The book is wrapped up by an example of play. Learn how to do it by the creators!

Plunge into worlds of fantastic adventure where dragons lie and the undead stalk the shades of your mind's imaginings, where creatures of legend plunder wealth through the horror of their passage. Monsters grim and foul taunt with the ecstasy of gold and glory. Upon the heels of these foes stalk heroes of great might; those who take up sword and shield, who harness eldritch might, those who traverse the narrow corridors in search of sport, and those who serve a purpose greater than all the others: Heroes, Freebooters, Mercenaries, and Adventurers.

I just want to say it here. Seems easiest place to say it.

While I am not an active C&C gamer at the moment (I'm currently indulging 1st edition AD&D), I do appreciate the efforts of Troll Lord games, and might support the 10th edition products cleaned up and no longer beholding to Hasbro.

The only attachment I have with original 1st edition AD&D is nostalgia.
Treated myself to a fresh set of hard covers for the 3 core books.

I like AD&D, I have no particular interest in anything 2nd edition and forward. I couldn't care less what design tricks have evolved since the 70-80s. The game has mostly turned into a whored out game meant only to please share holders by shoveling out stupid classes and stupid races for gamers with insufficient imagination to just play them out.

I have a soft spot for game producers who are only interested in pleasing the gamer audience.

Hasbro can offer their schlock for free and I won't...See more

The Players Guide here has the TLG code 80108, while the TLG website has the code of 80109.
The covers look the same, so what is the difference (update maybe?)

Why do I get the feeling that Troll Lord seem content to not answer any user questions?
It's driving me nuts.

12/18. So my 1st level fighter who doesn't have Dex (12 Dex BTW) as a primary needs to jump over a chasm. He has to roll an 18 or more to jump across? That's a 15% chance to succeed. That's just bad game design RAW, no it's absolutely the worse RAW game design ever written. We played a game RAW and everyone died jumping across a chasm! Adventure over! We all fell and died! IF it were a trap that I needed to dodge and it were placed by a 1st level thief, that would be a 19 difficulty which is 10%. That's a 90% failure rate! So do YOU use your own rules like this in your own home games? IF so how does anyone survive at low levels? Change the Siege rules to something more sensible like 8/12.

Well...why the heck did anyone actually try? The rules aren't the problem. The problem is the pc stupid enough to try over a CHASM! Everyone died? Why did a GM put a chasm in front of them? Eric...Eric..

So no skill system. Well thats a deal breaker for me, guess I'll be sticking to my 3.5 and 1st ed pathfinder books.

I'd like to use Castles & Crusades to run AD&D 1e modules like Temple of Elemental Evil. Can I do this out of the box?

Is there a difference between the 7th and 8th editions? Is it a new system or an errata?

Unfortunately there are plenty of inconsitencies in the editing of character classes and races, so you'll have to read that part of the rules very carefully (-> best examples are the Druids' abilities and Elves'/Halfelves' racial bonuses). No big thing to deal with but for the price I'd expect much better editing and proofreading. Sorry Troll Lords, things like that are a no-go.

This says it's for the 8th Printing, but the Full Preview seems to show an earlier printing. I really want to make sure I get the latest printing with the updated art found below. Can the publisher confirm?

Hello, it is the 8th printing. You can see on the 2nd page of the preview, near the bottom, that it is the 8th printing. Hope this helps! ~ Tim

Thanks, I do see that. Strange, it doesn't look anything like the 8th printing shown on the Amazon link I mentioned. I really want that printing as it looks awesome. Any chance the printing shown on the Amazon website will be for sale here?

I actually think that is the 7th printing, which you can get for free right here on DTRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/307737/Castles--Crusades-Players-Handbook--Fiction-BUNDLE?manufacturers_id=86

Thanks for the link, that's great that it's free. I do already have that printing. Please check out the screenshots on the Amazon link I provided. Those are not in the 7th printing. I like how it has the class abilities in the class table. The 7th didn't have that.

Hehe, those in the foreground look like they've had those 2nd level Spells "Moisturizer and Makeup" and "Well Coiffed" cast upon them at full effect.

Or perhaps this place was a Temple of Cosmetology and they are being affected by it's lingering residual magicks of 'Radiance Goals'.

Awesome new covers but the interior colorization is a horrible mess. They needed to keep the interior black and white.

I agree. I’d gladly pay for a black & white interior art version of the 3 core rulebook.

Some of the art, especially the new AD&D cover homage art is excellent. But the majority of the art in the C&C books is just painful to look at.

Hope there's a bundle discount for previous print purchaser. I would gladly reinvest in a new print if there was such system. I purchased pdfs for previous prints 6th and 7th and hoped I didn't have to buy next printing. But alas, another terrific refreshment and errata update to the line that I would never see unless I buy the book again. It feels like I am purchasing duplicates. OC, I could wait for occasional discount event, but want to read it while it's piping hot.

I just took a look at the kickstarter for 8th edition. Apparently, the only changes are to layout, cover and interior art.

For real? Ok, if there's no changes like we saw in Monster manual and CK's Guide, I will stick with older version.(still I have duplicate of two 7th print just for the sake of collecting it. So who knows, I might end up buying 8th ed)

Yes, we never change the rules of the game. The assassin was moved to the appendix and a lot of errata was fixed, all new art and layout, but other than that, you can use a 1st printing just as easy. ~ Tim

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
