The GameMaster's Apprentice 2e: Cyberpunk Deck is a system-neutral deck of cards that can be used as either a supplement for traditional tabletop RPGs or as a complete game engine for GM-free solo or group RPGs. Freshly augmented and better than ever, this new edition of the GMA is the first of the 2e line!

You can view the cards' complete instructions for free by clicking the preview link beneath the thumbnail above. You can also scroll down to view the card overview image and watch a video of the cards in use (though, as of this writing, that video is from the Kickstarter, and uses a slightly older beta draft)!

On each card is a set of more than a dozen randomizers; with 60 double-sided cards showing 120 unique card faces, you can generate literally millions of possible adventures, all without having to hunt through a book or PDF for a single table!

Overview of the GMA: Cyberpunk Deck card contents

With these cards, you can:

  • Instantly generate NPCs with randomized names, motivations, and backgrounds.

  • Create random events or story seeds.

  • Provide sensory details or random loot for characters searching or stealing.

  • Run games without a human GameMaster!

And more--they even work brilliantly as creative writing prompt generators, and have been playtested by 9th-12th grade students of both English and Game Design.

If you want specifics, including examples of how to use the randomizers on the cards, the complete instructions are available in the downloadable PDF preview linked below the cover image/thumbnail, but you can take a look at the overview below to see the quick and dirty version of what is on each card, and you can view a video preview below from the Cyberpunk Kickstarter, or see several videos from the original 2014 Kickstarter on my YouTube channel that explain how to use the cards to run a GM-free game or generate a story for a traditional RPG.

These cards were created with the support of over 530 individuals on Kickstarter, and would not exist in their current form otherwise! Thank you!

How does the GMA2e differ from the original edition?

While I am still very proud of the original GMA Decks of all genres, they have always been a passion project born of tinkering–and so I could not help but want to improve them.

Everything critical about what they are for remains the same, but I have made the newest versions (designated ‘GMA2e’ for now) more true to my original goal: Preventing the need to reference tables or look up information in PDFs to make them useful.

I’ve also learned a LOT about solo gaming and improvisational GMing over the past decade, watching the hobby evolve and continuing to teach Game Design to generation upon generation of high school students!

So while there’s nothing wrong with using the old decks and materials, and I still have a soft spot for the Tag Symbols from the old decks, I believe this new version is a huge improvement, and much, much easier to use on the fly, as intended.

I’m not necessarily sure I won’t continue tinkering a little, but keep an eye out for more GMA2e decks in the near future–and happy gaming!

This is absolutely beautiful.

Any chance the fantasy deck will receive a similar type of update?

Thanks! And yes, while I can’t guarantee a timeline, it is my hope to update all of the original GMA decks eventually.

I'll be rebuying the fantasy deck as soon as you can update it.

Hi! Thanks for such an amazing deck! If I want to print it myself what did you intend to be the back of the cards? Can't seem to find anything in the files.

Hello! Thanks for the kind words :-)
The cards are intended to be printed back to back, so it makes a stack of 60 double-sided cards instead of 120 single-sided, which is too hard to hold and shuffle easily, especially if you sleeve them.
You can of course print single-sided if you prefer, but in that case I recommend just using opaque-backed sleeves. We might make a universal card back for the whole set of GMA cards in our next big kickstarter, but currently the only one I have is aimed at the base deck!

Aaah, makes sense! But how to choose which side to look at when drawing a card? I feel like I would ocd over missing some cards entirely since I would never look at some sides xD

I understand! So, there are two methods I use, usually combined:
1) Every time I shuffle, first flip over half the cards.
2) Instead of dealing from the top, I usually cut the deck and look at or draw cards from the middle. I decide when I’m doing it if I’m going with top or bottom, and then shuffle them back in (or just put them back, cut, and flip before I continue).

This is a great deck. (See my review.) But unlike some of your previous decks, the low-ink version is missing any cut-lines to use when printing & cutting the cards. Is that an oversight, or is it intentional? The missing lines were an easy DIY-fix for me, because I have the right software & tools to do it accurately without botching it. But that is just because of my visual arts background. Most folks don't have that stuff. For most purchasers, I think it would be helpful to add at least some faint cut-lines or card corner-marks to the PnP, in either a toggled layer or a separate pdf.

P.S. I also second what Craig W posted here: I love the new 2e format. I can still make-do with the old format. But the 2e format is much better. Are some updates to the older decks in the works?

Thanks for the kind review! (And I see what you say about bright contrast in it—we will keep that in mind for future genres!). The lack of any cut guides is an accident, because I forgot to add a new version of them to this new output process, so I’ll try to fix that shortly! It shouldn’t be difficult but I may not have a chance to fix it before Saturday. Thanks for pointing it out!

And yes, as I replied to Craig W., we are definitely going to improve the original decks, too :-)

Sorry for the extra week delay, but I've now added cut guides to the low-ink PnP deck! It's a little crude since I wanted it done faster, but they should be accurate to the same full bleed size as the full color version is!
In the future, we'll make sure to include cut guides whenever it would be helpful.

I believe you said at one point that you planned to update some of the older decks to a 2nd edition. Is that thill in the works?

Yes! The art update for the Base Deck is already mostly done, thanks to how well the last Kickstarter and bundle sales went, so while I don’t have an exact timeline, I believe I’ll be able to release it within the next 6-10 months, and then we may of alternate between new genres and updated versions.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
