Fléaux!

Selected Option:
After a successful Kickstarter campaign (400% funded!), Fléaux! is now available for your gaming group!

Fléaux! (pronounced Flay-O) is a brutal medieval/Early renaissance/Baroque fantasy rpg. It's inspired by the Black Hack 2e and our own Black Sword Hack (currently a Gold seller on DriveThruRPG).  It's a stand-alone game.

Player-facing rules, brutal and short combat, dark and messy magic, firearms and alchemy rules, a well-stocked bestiary and a setting rife with political intrigues, Fléaux! is easy to teach and run.

No classes. Pick up an origin (elf, dwarf but also ogre-blooded or goblin), roll your upbringing and starting profession, learn what crime they're accused of and your character is ready to go. Experience let's you tailor your progression as you see fit.

The book comes with an introductory adventure, Bloodbath at Castle Kragstein to let you run a game right away!

Super cool book and intending to run a session very soon. But I’ve got a question that’s really bugging me that I can’t find an answer to. Some of the stat blocks for creatures have “speech” as an option for defence but speech doesn’t seem to refer to any attribute so I’m not sure what you would roll in that instance. Anybody got any ideas?

Bonjour!

A la page 19 du document en français, le spadassin est la seule classe qui ne dispose pas d'un bonus d'attribut et la phrase se termine par une virgule. Pouvez-vous m'indiquer l'attibut bonus?

Merci d'avance.

I have a few questions: (1) You start at 1st level with only 1 Talent. Correct? (2) How many sorcery spells do you start with? One? All of them? (3) Same for Charms, Curses page 44? (4) I know there are no classes. So this means that -everyone- is a spell caster/sorcerer?

That aside, I gave this 5 stars because it really is a great alternative to the current WFRP ruleset.

Heh... a few more questions and a suggestion. (1) I found page 19 "sorcerer's apprentice". So, not everyone is a sorcerer? (2) At level 2, do you become a sorcerer or wizard? (the two words seem to be interchangeable). (3) on page 41 CHAOS REVENGE, bottom of the list, SACRIFICE: does that apply to the Revege d6 roll or something else? If that's for the revenge roll, shouldn't that be a -1? (5) On page 18, you might want to add something like "choose one of the four profession and roll a D6". I know someone who thought you rolled on all 4 tables, and I can kind of see how they thought that. Also on page 26 under Profession, you could an "or" ie, "Violence, Isolation, Your Resourcefulness, or Your Knowledge." (6) And last, are you going to release STRISCIA on drivethru? Will there be an English version? It looks very interesting.

(1) Yes one talent
(2) Only the sorcerer's apprentice profession starts with spells: "Your character knows two randomly determined spells". Further spells can only be found through adventuring (which answers your (3))
(4) No it means anyone can learn spells if they select the appropriate talent as they level up.

About Sacrifice: no it concerns the WILLPOWER die not the REVENGE die.
Thank your for your interest in the game.

Two questions, same concept. Regardless of the consequences of a failed Willpower die (Panic) I was wondering if: 1. If I fail a Willpower check when I cast a spell and it rolls 1 or 2 on the Willpower die, is the spell still cast? 2. And if I fail with the Willpower die when I declare that I want to do two of the same actions in combat, can I still perform the actions?

Yes to the first one. For the second one no, you must follow the Panic rules.

Your starting profession works as a talent, for example:
Mercenary: Increase the size of your damage die by one.

Next talent is acquired at level 3, where you get to choose it in the talents list (p.21 of the english edition).

In the Italian edition of the game it is written that in a turn "you can move AND perform two actions" (for example: move, attack in melee, cast a spell). It's correct? Or does the first move action count towards the total of two allowed actions?

It's two actions per round (move included).

Page 30 says you can move and take two actions

Page 33 makes it seem like the move is an action.

Me confused

I cast "Remove confusion":

_move is an action
p.30 is a mistake.

Sounds like it might be a good option for running LotFP adventure modules with? Or even WHFRP or Mork Borg?

Edit: Yep, just read the intro from the preview:

"The world of FLÉAUX! is on the brink of
oblivion. Far from the flickering lights of
civilization, lurking in the deepest forests,
hidden in the ruins of past empires; gathered
behind the mountains at the end of the world,
the legions of Chaos await... Ignoring or
minimizing the threat, the free peoples of the
world fail to see the corruption that is slowly
eating away at the foundations of society."

Which media source(s) would recommend as inspiration ?

Of course, here you go:

The Thirty Years War by C.V Wedgewood: it's a bit dated but is still a very compelling read about the period. History books are some of the best rpg sourcebooks out there (and usually cheaper than rpg books).

Simplicius Simplicissimus written in 1668 by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen. Picaresque adventures means there's plenty of NPCs, locations and situations to use for you.

Another classic is Till Eulenspiegel, the stories of a man using his wits to survive in the Holy Roman Empire.

Tired of reading books? Then go for a manga! Kentaro Miura's Berserk will give you anything a GM wants: places, peoples and problems!

Want to watch a movie? James Clavell's The Last Valley is a good watch, so is Paul Verhoeven Flesh and Blood.

A bit of music? Try searh cor "Music from the Thirty Years War" on Youtube..

I had a Gatsu feeling ( ah ah I funny) Berserk was an inspiration for Fléaux!, I was also hesitating with Solomon Kane.

Thanks a lot for the sources Alexandre :-) .

Not knowing the game, but reading the suggested media sources, id guess the movie "A Field in England" by Ben Wheatley might also be a good fit.

Each player gets to move and two actions, does this include defend actions? So if a player uses both actions to attack, they can no longer defend?
Reply

No, players get two actions, one of which can be a move action. Defensive actions don't take place during the character's turn so don't count against this limit.

On page 30 it says a character can move and take two actions

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
