Wolves at the Lake - Core Rulebook

There is a place just off the edge of our maps that was never meant to be found. Most travel right past, clueless and carefree.

These stories aren't about them.

These stories are about those unlucky enough to stumble upon this place. They may not know the mistakes that they've made just yet, but they will soon enough.

They won't make it to the morning.

Lucky for them, the night is just beginning.

Welcome to the Lake

Wolves at the Lake is a horror world-building game where the Story Teller and the players work together to weave a tale of misfortune. The game is meant for one-shots and takes around 3-4 hours to finish. The recommended player count is anywhere from 3 to 6, not including the Story Teller.

The game uses tokens that are flipped back and forth by the players and the Story Teller. They're used to represent the constant struggle between the characters, their inner demons, and everything else that wants them dead.

I sell STL files for tokens that I’ve 3D modeled for use with this game. They aren’t required to play and can easily be substituted with coins or cards.

got me your game recently and will dig in more soon. It sounds promising!

What I immediately noticed was the centered, all small caps type which I find hard to read over the course of 20 pages. Would you perhaps consider creating a version of the PDF which uses upper and lower case letters? I understand if you should decline since it's a bit of work, but would be delighted if you could provide that said version. It may only be around 20 pages, but legibility might improve for all. Cheers!

Thank you so much, your support is super appreciated!

I've actually been working on an updated edition that adds quite a bit more content.

More perks to entice your players with, additional story starters to help spark even more ideas, and additional rules to flesh out and improve the overall flow of the game.
The content that's already in the book will be getting further refined as well. Examples that show how rules work in play, accessibility to make it so that more people can enjoy it, and more breathing room to make it so that everything doesn't feel as cramped.

I'm also going to do my best to bring it in at a reduced price for everyone who picked up this version. It's awesome that so many people are willing to support my game, and I want to be able to support all of you in return!

Is there a forum or platform to ask a question about game mechanics somewhere?

Thanks a bunch for buying my game!

Currently this is the primary place to ask questions about the game and mechanics, what can I help you with?

'Tis the season, after all ;)
In the example on page 6, one player is running and benefits from the PP "Quick". So they "pay less" to get away. How does this work if a group runs? Would all of them have to flip and would only one (or more) be deducted for everyone who has Quick? Or is a group always treated as one entity? In that case, could quick stack?
What kind of items did you have in mind to restore resolve? It is my understanding that those would be quite rare, correct?
I'm gonna run this in about 2 weeks for my regular group and I am very excited to see how they manage! :D

If multiple players are working towards a single goal then they'll count as one entity when it comes to costs. If more than one player in that group has the same perk then it'll stack. In line with the example on page 6, if two players in a group have quick then it negates the flips entirely
(Three players with quick won't cause a token to flip to positive).
The players are incentivized to stick close because they're stronger together, but the StoryTeller is actively working to keep them apart.
The negative perk Lone Wolf works the same way though, all it takes is a one player with the perk to make things harder. (one bad apple will spoil the bunch)

Things that restore resolve are indeed quite rare. They can range from med kits and green herbs all the way to the last message they received from a loved one right before their phone lost signal. They don’t always have to be physical items, sometimes they're just a narrative "idea".

They just need to...See more

I'm not sure if it's a setting for this title, but I can't leave a rating/review!

I know that publisher accounts aren't allowed to rate and review items that aren't in the Publisher Resources category.
If that is the case, I appreciate the interest in rating and reviewing.
If that isn't the case then let me know and I'll try to see if it's something I can fix or change.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
