Tools for Frontier Living

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Frontier Beckons.

The Core is advanced, comfortable, and safe. Too safe for some, for whom the wilds of the Frontier promise adventure, riches, and freedom.

The worlds of the Frontier are hostile. Even if they support life, that life is no friend to humanity. Every single world outside the Core is trying, in its own unique way, to kill the human interlopers. Native life, climate, geography, even the air and water can be dangerous. To survive, to live and prosper, humanity must use all the tools at its disposal to tame these hostile worlds.

Or die trying.

Humans are tool-using animals, and in the pages of Tools for Frontier Living are a selection of equipment needed for survival on alien worlds. There are five sections, covering a range of goods and services from deep space suits to the famous Foot-Long Egg, and including robots and drones, exploration and survival gear, medical equipment, along with weapons and surplus armour, all ideally suited for adventurers and those who brave the Frontier.

Inside you will find:

  • Space Technology
  • Exploration and Survival Gear
  • Industrial Equipment
  • Consumer Goods and Services
  • Medical Technology
  • Security and Police Equipment

I hope this book will get an edit. Some stat lines are showing errors. For instance:

-In submachine guns there is no RoF for either.

-For surplus military arms there is no difference in the stats between the Traylor Arms M4 and M5, and their stat lines do not even line up to the description block to include magazine size.

Something I also miss from the earlier Guide was the section on Frontier settlements. This would greatly help a GM in getting a idea and convey the feel of those settlements to the players.

They seem to be collecting errata on the Facebook site and probably the Mongoose page too. Plenty of time for corrections before print, I think.

I did actually order the print version - I’ve found that the material quality of the core box set to be very good and that is a big factor for me, I think.

I too wonder how much of the equipment will end up being mined for ideas in a standard Traveller setting? The use of the Robots book will also crossover a lot, I feel.

And of course I don’t want anyone to get the wrong impression I think the book is bad. Just a second set of eyes on what can be perfectly understandable “oop’s” in editing.

And maybe I missed colony material in other books in this latest edition of 2300AD. Just that this element found in the previous edition of this book and not finding it here stuck out to me.

Anyhow, I look forward to the update.

Thirty dollars for 160 electronic pages. Ridiculous.

I’m not saying your comments are predictable but there are, as of yet, undiscovered alien civilizations on the far side of uncharted space that knew somebody was going to say that.

I've got the 2014 edition of this book. What's different in 2022?

Well right off the bat I can say about $12 more for at least a dozen fewer pages.

Formatting, layout and art, primarily as with the rest of the line. You can get a sense of what it is like and what is in the contents from the Preview.

On their forums they pointed out that they'll be moving the colony design material into a separate book. So this book is literally just equipment.

I'm enjoying what I'm reading so far and the artwork I'm seeing (especially the suit artwork). I can imagine this being useful in any hard sci-fi Traveller setting, not just 2300 AD.

In case any prospective buyer is curious: the "Robots and Drones" section DOES require the Robot Handbook to fully take advantage of the robots and drones' various options. Which isn't a knock against either book; I just want to state that in case anyone was curious.

To clarify this: the options for the robots and drones in "Tools for Frontier Living" are described in detail in the Robot Handbook. However most of the options are straightforward enough to understand, or the mechanical details of the options are already included in other traits/stats.

This is also the case with the robots and drones found in 2300AD Book 1.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
