NewEdo is a game designed for players who love the character creation and customization process. Set in a city where a thousand years of tradition have come into conflict with the rapid pace of modern life, NewEdo's core theme is change.

Character Creation: with 10 Lineages (your physical form) based largely on creatures from Japanese lore, and 21 Paths (your job or role in the game, which affects your politics as much as it affects your abilities), NewEdo gives you a broad foundation on which to build your perfect character.  Then you use a Priority Buy process to assign a level of importance to each of your character's Backgrounds, Magic, Augmentations, Skills and Core Traits - a higher priority grants you more resources, at the expense of forcing a lower priority on another cateogry.  With this system, no two characters are ever the same, even those built on the same Lineage and Path foundation.

Setting: NewEdo is a massive metropolis where the past and future collide, in a world where belief can literally change reality.  While it shares some neon-urban aesthetics of cyberpunk-style games, NewEdo's adventures revolve around its various inflection points - between past and future, tradition and technology, mysticism and science.  In one district, traditional wooden homes wind up and down labyrinthine streets, while only a short subway ride away, 100-storey skyscrapers pierce the city's neon-tinted clouds.  Kimono-clad samurai share the streets with cybernetic soldiers, hacker-mystics, and pink-haired revolutionaries. Characters are intended to be larger than life, Legends who can change the future of the setting.

System: NewEdo uses a medium-crunch dice pool (Trait + Skill) system, customized with mechanics that encourage and reward unique gameplay decisions.  Your character's Legend is the reason they do what they do, and acts as NewEdo's only meta-currency, fueling your amazing abilities.  The Fate Card is a wholly unique mechanic that introduces the potential for random outcomes into every action, while at the same time acting as a record of your decisions at the table.

The PDF: the digital version of NewEdo contains everything you need to run your first games in the Empire, including extensive character creation options, a chapter to assist storytellers, lots of equipment, vehicles, NPCs and creatures, and a ton of vibrant worldbuilding. With chapter bookmarks, extensive internal hyperlinks, and a thorough index, it is an easy-to-use guide to the colourful and engaging world of NewEdo.

VTT Support: Your NewEdo download includes 5 battlemaps produced by Nebula Maps, in JPG and MP4 formats, with and without grids. These maps are free for your personal use, and show a variety of scenes you might find around the city. We're also nearing completion of a custom Foundry module for the game, so stay tuned!

Hey I just got this and am getting ready to start a campaign with my group. We have a player who focuses on mages whenever he plays and he noticed that there wasn't a lot of variety of spells(rotes) per kami. And something I noticed was that the weapon modifications stopped at rank 4. Is there a possibility of seeing expansions on that kind of stuff in a future addendum?

Hey Joshua, thanks for giving NewEdo a chance! The short answer is yes, there's more of everything coming. The book was constrained by size, and I tried to offer sufficient depth of each, uh, ability (magic, augs, skills, weapons & mods, etc.) without making the core book 500 pages. But I know that that might leave you wanting more (a great business plan, but a total tease, I get it). So, first off, there are two NewEdo expansions about to be published. You can find them both here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/salty-games/77-stories-in-newedo. Those are *mostly narrative expansions though, so they won't fulfil your want for moar mechanical stuff.

To satisfy that want, I've got two longer answers. First, the Temple of Kozu is a full campaign expansion that will come out next year that will include more kami, more rotes, more augs, more spells, and a full adventure to bring PCs from Rank 1 to Rank 2.

Second, because I'm only one creator, I'm about to open up what is being...See more

Hey Patrick, yes a PoD is in the works. I've gotta convert the digital format which may take some time given that I'm terrible with tech, but I hope to have PoD up by the end of summer. Alternately, there are hard and soft covers that will be available for order on our website (www.salty-games.com) in the next 10 days...

Fair enough, I wish there was a more affordable international shipping option. I will work on that PoD (and look into European distribution), and let you know if/when either become available!

As a history nerd and a big fan of Japanese culture, I'm in love with NewEdo! Definitely not the same old, same old. Really fun writing and stunningly gorgeous artwork make it the best RPG book I’ve ever seen. Five stars from this player!

Ha that's awesome, I'm really glad you're enjoying it! One of my design goals was "you know, kinda like Shadowrun, but better" haha. I'm really happy to have ticked that one off the list for at least one reader!!

Lord this is such a great system. Me an my friends have always been fans of action, anime and cyberpunk themes but have had such a difficult time altering other systems in order to make something that fit what we wanted. Only problem I have at the moment is that it doesn't seem clear how many enemies should be present in any given fight. I see that certain NPCs have ranks associated but I'm not sure what rank to group lvl ratio is appropriate. I can always fudge numbers until I find a good spot, but would still appreciate a bit of guidelines (unless i missed that somewhere then I apologize)
Also one incredibly minor nitpick is the Fuyu and Yonshakudama plot hooks may have been mixed up since it describes Fuyu as being the one that doesnt eat, drink, bleed, etc when he is the human and Yonshakudama being the fire kami.
I still love this setting and the ruleset, Its been the first time in a while I've been going ham on making new settings, characters, and plot hooks. I'd love to see a scenario booklet...See more

Michael, thank you so much for the detailed comment! I'm really glad you're enjoying NewEdo. Funny, we're just discussing "encounter difficulty" in the Discord this morning, and then I see this post (sorry for the delay in responding to you). To answer that query of yours, I found through testing that there is really no right answer for the number of bad guys to throw into an encounter, because every NewEdo party is different, and the PCs can have such a huge deviation in (to be blunt) combat efficacy. Unlike most level-based games, the PCs in NewEdo may have wildly varying martial prowess, so it's impossible to say that one, two, or seven baddies is the "right" number for any group. NPCs at Rank 1 are slightly weaker, on average, than Rank 1 PCs, but that relationship flips by Rank 5, where the NPCs are much tougher than all but the most min-maxed PC. There is probably a way to measure all this and provide better guidance to storytellers, and that's something I'll have to work on. Feedback...See more

Thanks for the clarifications! I definitely see what you mean with your point on combat efficiency. Its really impressive to me how even if two people were to take the exact same Path, Lineage, or even Priority Buy Ranks (which is already highly unlikely), the two characters can still be wildly different based on where they put their points into. That said, pure combat-wise, an Oiran who chose not to get any combat skills isnt going to have the same effectiveness as a Musashika who took many combat skills. But I do really enjoy the way backgrounds are made to provide great incentives for players opting for a non-combat playstyle.

Ill check out the discord once I've got a better moment, and also cant wait for any future models as well!

What is up with the increasing price? It went from the advertised 50% off of $4.20 to $5.63 overnight.

Honestly I have no idea Lee. The original price is $15 Canadian (like $11 something USD). I set a November sale for 50% off that brings it down to the $5.60-something. Because I have my own sale on, I've opted out of DTRPG's automatic sales. But they seem to be applying their own discount, which has set the USD price to 50% of $8.40 which is a totally arbitrary number. So I apologize if you missed out on saving an extra buck or so, and hope you aren't disappointed with what you paid for what you got!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
