I went to some trouble (and expense) to purchase the Core rules, the Compendium, the Modern Anime, and most of the RHAB Air Combat game materials, AND downloaded the character sheet. I'm not a stupid person and I write RPGs. Why in the world does the character sheet not match the materials in the book? Why is there no glossary that explains what a Remainder is, how a bonus works, how Attributes produce a bonus, what a Kit is (kits in ANY other RPG are sets of equipment or tools) I read through three main books for hours today trying to figure out how to make a character and how to make good decisions while doing so. The Character Sheet offered in DrivethruRPG has 5 different abbreviations (RS/FB/MTB/AB and /TS) and I have no idea what to put there based on the Core text. Scott, a glossary would really help. I want to learn how to play this system, but at the moment I am only getting hints and guesses as how things work. The good news is that I thoroughly approve the basic idea of simplifying the basics of fighting...See more

If you can just explain what the various Abbreviations are on the character sheet, I can sort out which ones I don't know. That would be a big help. Thank you.

Hey Michael, yes, yes, and yes! The Core RPG was produced in 2022 and over the past three years have had A LOT of changes made to it (Compendium V1 and the upcoming Compendium V2 as well as the Gammalitic Age World Book and various little tweeks in the adventure content. The biggest change was the TS (True Skill) vs the RS (Raw Skill). The character sheet reflects these changes. I have a video on filling out the character sheet (which should help and explain the lingo). I'm going to put the link here for the character sheet tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr3VSWHa6qk&t=1103s That should really help, plus you can watch any of my 'real play' videos of sessions of the game to help wrap your head around it, they can be found in regular videos, while other things (not a tad outdated but still viable) can be found about the system in the 'live' tab. REALLY hope this helps! I've tried to make the resources available for free, and hope that intrepid people (like you) will ask. And as for air...See more

The video was extremely helpful! Thanks so much! As for Air Combat, In Harm's Way: Wild Blue 1st Edition had a very elaborate movement and attitude system (rather 3 dimensional) that attempted to give the players the opportunity to experience energy management and how different angles off affected shooting etc. The air combat system was a holdover from two earlier In Harm's Way games dealing with WWI and WWII. What works well for earlier aircraft does NOT work so well for modern aircraft. The air combat part of the game was pretty much a wargame, not a roleplaying game and greatly slowed down the action (much the same way combat slows down any TTRPG, but worse). The 2nd Edition is going more in your direction, but now pays lipservice to general complication of air combat. What you have here in your game is to turn it into character vs NPC (or other player), with both sides jockeying for position simply by making better Pilot Skill rolls. If I roll better (with modifications to Vixen"s Viper Pilot Bonus),...See more

I've never even heard of Strike Witches, but YES, it is totally a FAST thing! Reminds me a bit of one of my favorites, Girls und Panzer, which would also be a fun FAST version now that I think about it, just do a bunk of tank stats from WWII and go at it. Also, before I get too off topic, I just put up a Character Creation Primer (2025) which does as good as I can get updated creation system. I tried to put it up as PWYW, but we'll see if that works. As for aerial combat, there are A LOT of great war games out there, but I obviously am not trying to compete there, just trying to give a fast and fun way to do vehicle to vehicle combat without a board inside the world of a fun RPG setting. Good luck to Vixen!

Hi Scott. I've watched the tutorial and took notes. It was generally useful. I promptly purchased and downloaded your new Combat Primer. Are very useful piece with lots of good information. Thanks! What I really need though is for you to publish/release something along the lines of character creation. I would envision it as a 1 or 2 page section by section description of exactly how you create a character. (Yes, I am aware of the simple window in the Core rules describing things in general.) This would be next to a full page illustration of the new character sheet, just like in the video, describing where stuff goes. Something that talks about kits for a bit would help too. So far you have a kit for Combat/Academic/Social, and then you have kits for various classes base on race, era, genre, etc. How many kits apply? Your Pilot character Marylin Braddock, for example, has the Archetype Social. She also has the kit Performer (a Class). This allows her to be a Fighter Pilot who has both Beauty Traits as well as Skill...See more

I purchased a copy of Fast Core RPG on the Art of the Genre website. Scott Taylor, if you see this, is there any way for me to contact with a question? Sorry, this was the only way I could think of to reach out to you.

Been reading this book for months - I need to buckle down and power through!
Preliminary thoughts before I review: the art is gorgeous. The formatting is attractive, but IMO the size of text would be PERFECT for an A5 size, or something around the size of a Savage Worlds book. It looks great on a 10" tablet without zooming.
The system seems solid and, true to form, fast.
Found out about this product from an interview on a podcast on YouTube - very happy to have found this product, and to delving into the magic system in particular.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
