Mythic Game Master Emulator Second Edition

Play any role-playing game solo or without a Game Master!

Mythic's oracle-style question resolution system revolutionized solo role-playing. The Second Edition of the Mythic Game Master Emulator updates the ground-breaking 2003 ruleset with essential new additions, a wide range of options to customize your adventures, and numerous refinements.

Mythic Game Master Emulator Second Edition can be used with any role-playing system to replace the Game Master, or played on its own without another RPG.

This new edition contains:

  • A revised and simplified Fate Chart for faster and more intuitive Fate Question resolution.
  • The new Fate Check system, receive answers without a chart.
  • Numerous rules refinements and enhancements taking into account two decades worth of Mythic player experiences.
  • Many options for fine-tuning Mythic to get the kind of role-playing experience you want.
  • 47 Meaning Tables to add just the right detail to your adventures when you need it.

The book is designed to be accessible to new players while also offering current players an updated and richer Mythic experience.

How does it work?
Mythic emulates a Game Master by using a few key concepts:

  • A Yes/No question and answer mechanic.
  • Random Events that add surprises.
  • Meaning Tables that offer inspirational prompts for important details.
  • Lists tracking important goals and characters which are randomly selected when called for.
  • Scene structure to give your adventure form and order.
  • A Chaos Factor that changes the tempo of the adventure as you play.

Everything is guided by your expectations and interpretations based on the ongoing Context. This makes sure the adventure continues in a coherent fashion while still allowing for twists and subversions that keep things exciting.

What's changed in this edition?
While the rules have been completely rewritten most of the core concepts of Mythic remain while much has been added or refined. Here is a summary of the biggest changes:

  • THE FATE CHART: Odds have been slightly simplified and some of their titles changed to give a more intuitive feel. The table itself has been redesigned to also make it more intuitive.
  • THE FATE CHECK: Answer Questions without the chart. This version has been updated from Mythic Variations II to make it feel more like the Fate Chart.
  • CHOICES: Mythic GME Second Edition gives more power to Player choices.
  • LISTS: List management is more dynamic.
  • ELEMENTS MEANING TABLES: In addition to the Actions and Descriptions Meaning Tables there are 45 Elements Meaning Tables that are more specifically themed. This gives you the option to choose a Meaning Table that is most relevant to the current Context.
  • OPTIONS: There are a lot of options throughout Second Edition, more ways for you to customize your Mythic experience to get the kind of game you want.
  • REFINEMENTS: This edition contains numerous changes and refinements to make Mythic play smoother and more dynamic.

Happy adventuring! :)

PDF Options: This PDF file contains layers, allowing you to make the file more printer friendly. In Layers navigation of your PDF reader you can uncheck the "Artwork, color" layer to make all the artwork black-and-white. You can also uncheck "Border" to remove the top and bottom border graphics and uncheck "Header & Page Number" to remove those elements as well.

What is the difference between the regular print editions and the "Premium"?

The differences are pretty subtle, although I would say Premium uses slightly higher quality color and finer paper, while Standard uses more saturated color and a slightly coarser paper.

So, this is probably a stupid question, and it might be addressed later in the book. Is there a place where I can get a form fillable version of the adventure list chart on page 45? I tend to use devices for solo play, rather than pen and paper, and that rollable fill-in-yourself table seems like it'd be stupendously helpful for play.

How long is the pdf on sale?
I tried to order a copy of Mythic Game Master Emulator Second Edition, got a notice my card was charged but no indication from DriveThruRPG that the order completed. Haven' t heard back from them yet. Anyone else have this issue? I have a dubious vibe from DriveThruRPG now. Really don't think I will purchase it from them

Is the One-Page Mythic Game Master Emulator included in the second edition?

Hi Alex :) No, One-Page Mythic Game Master Emulator is separate and isn't in the MGME2e book. It can be found in Mythic Magazine #25, Mythic Magazine Compilation #5, and as a standalone product.

Is 2nd edition compatible with the variations books? I don't have any of the Mythic books yet but I play in a non-fantasy/Call of Cthulhu genre where the themes in the variations books seem to fit better.

I'm wondering if going with 1st edition and the variations books might be my better option?

Thanks.

2e is compatible with the Variations books, although some of those systems have been updated and incorporated into 2e. While the Themes rules in MV have not been included in 2e, the 2e book has its own suggestions and systems for developing themes and specific adventure tones. There are also various Mythic Magazine issues that offer rules for this, including for horror, that are compatible with 1e and 2e.

So you can use the Theme rules from MV with 2e or 1e. Going with 2e may give you more options to work with, but 1e plus MV works too. Mythic is very modular, plug in rules you like and ignore ones you don't, so if you started with one approach and later find it needs adjusting or you want to take it further, then it would be easy to do so.

Hi. Just a quick question: some time back I asked about cards for the 2nd edition and told that they were planned. I later followed up and was told they were delayed. Recently, I heard (from an unofficial source) that they had been cancelled.

I am just wondering if this is accurate? Have they been cancelled, or might they still appear at some point? I'd love to have them, but recognize that they could be quite a bit of work.
Thanks!

Hi Craig, thank you for asking :) I would still like to do the cards, and they are still planned, but I can't say for sure if they will happen. It depends on how the production schedule pans out with other projects. A lot of my emphasis right now is on Mythic Roleplaying 2e. I would really love to make the deck, as I think it would come together well and I haven't made a new deck in a while.

What is so special about the 2nd edition that it has to cost three times as much as the 1st edition did??? It's hard to believe how ridiculously overpriced some of these books are.

There's a bunch of expanded information, many more examples of how to use it, play advice, multiple variations to tailor it to your needs/ preferences, and more. Of course, each person will have their own view of things, but I found it absolutely worth buying twice-- I bought the PDF and liked it enough to buy again as a hardcover.

The standard version isn't too expensive and I would even consider buying it *again* to have the premium.

Just wanted to say a sincere and public thank you to Tana Pigeon/WordMill.

I contacted them through their website with a question they were in no way obligated to help me with. They replied quickly and went above and beyond to address my question.

Their products are exceptional, I haven't been this stoked about playing and writing in a while. Do yourself a favor if you're reading this, buy something! You'll dig it.

<p>I saw there was a 1-star review from a "Nicole John" asking for tables to be converted for only using d6, and while I can't contact them directly, I couldn't resist sharing exactly how to do that:</p>
<p>For equivalent results distribution to d10 (x2 for d100):
Roll 2d6 (with one either rolled first or in a different color). The first/colored die acts as a d2 modifying the second die, with 1-3 = +0 and 4-6 = +5. Add the +0/+5 to the face value on the second die, unless it's a 6--reroll die #2 until it's not a 6.</p>
<p>I didn't come up with this, but I also doubt DTG will let me post a link. This method is from from the subreddit r/rpg, in a comment left by u/Simbertold on the post "How to use D6 as a full 0-100 percentile." There are other methods shared there, but this is my favorite.</p>

I noticed that, too. I wish I could respond because to one-star the book just because it doesn't use their preferred die? Really? Why not judge based on all the amazing stuff that's there?

Can someone speak as to the compatibility with the adventure crafter book and crafter and emulator decks?

Do we need to wait for second editions of those accessories? What about the variation books?

I purposefully maintained Mythic's modular nature with second edition so it's compatible with earlier material. Plug in elements you like, unplug elements you don't like. There is also a section in MGME2e that updates the advice on using it with TAC.

The book is still compatible with the GME deck, however not everything is the same. For instance, there are more meaning tables in GME2e that aren't found in the current deck. Fate Questions, Meaning Tables, Scene structure, Random Events all work the same, however. So, you could use the deck as is to replace Fate Questions, or to handle any aspects that the deck currently handles, or combine it with rolled tables in second edition, depending on which elements you preferred.

For everyone thinking about getting this book ... giving a 1star review just because the person want's to have a different die used, is absolutely ludicrous and doesn't reflect the quality of the product at all.

Hello! I really want a spiralbound copy (available on Lulu) but I'm wondering if I order there if it comes with the PDF as well? Does DTRPG offer spiral for any books? If so, +1 to add that option. ^_^ Thanks!

One option, and something that I have done for several books now, is to buy the PDF, and then go to OfficeDepot.com and have them print a spiral bound copy for you. In color it is a little spendy, but in black and white, it's really approachable.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
