100 Spaceships to Encounter

Characters will encounter other spaceships, whether this be during a journey or at a port. This supplement has 100 such ships for them to encounter. The ships don't include any purely military ships, though some are armed and some are in their own way military. They range from small orbital shuttles to interplanetary ships to interstellar ones, and come in many different sizes. Each ship is named and given an overview of what it is and what it does.

Here are some sample results:

  • Indulgence: Indulgence is a spacefaring palace of a ship, an entertainment vessel that cruises from system to system as those onboard, most of whom are very wealthy, entertain themselves in various different ways, with gambling being the most common but there are also other entertainments of borderline legality. If the entertainments were all completely legal, Indulgence wouldn't need to keep moving out of other jurisdictions. She's a heavily defended ship with a well-trained staff, though quite a lot of the staff are looking for someone wealthy to fasten onto for the long term.
  • Innis Alpha: Innis Alpha is a ship that manages to look both extremely new and not completely finished. Which is an accurate impression, as it happens to be true. Innis Alpha is a prototype ship, a new yacht type vessel that is currently being tested out by a shipbuilder. As she's a prototype, parts are unfinished, and whilst she's being tested, her appearance can change between sightings, as new options are developed. As Innis Alpha is an expensive prototype, and unarmed at that, she is usually accompanied by an armed ship to ensure that no-one tries to make off with company property.
  • Inquisitive: Inquisitive is an aptly-named scientific vessel with a variable complement. The crew that handles the ship herself tends to remain the same, but the scientific specialists regularly change, depending on the mission. Inquisitive is owned by a consortium of universities and sent on scientific missions for them, taking the scientific crews from faculty and students. The ship has a range of scientific equipment at all times, though much of this can be swapped out as she has modular laboratories. Inquisitive is not armed and has minimal defensive capabilities.
  • Janus' Whimsy: Janus' Whimsy, commonly just called "The Whimsy," is a space going palace owned by the titular Janus. The ship is a monument to just what can be achieved when you have effectively unlimited funds to fit out a vessel and effectively zero taste when doing so. The Whimsy is undoubtedly luxurious and everything is the best money can buy when it comes to quality, but inside it's a horrendous clashing mess of unsuitably paired furnishings. Though Janus believes it's a monument to good taste and gets rather upset when anyone disagrees. Upset megarich people can ruin the lives of others quite easily.
  • Jumper: Jumper is not a true ship, but a frame with different types of docking ports that can hold a variety of ships of around the light freighter size or smaller, or even cargo modules. Jumper is an interstellar engine and not much more than that; she docks with ships that lack interstellar capabilities and provides what they lack. Her crew is comparatively small and doesn't tend to mix with those of ships that are using the jump frame for transport; Jumper lacks anything in the way of extra facilities for such.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
