The Game Unfolding Machine (GUM) is a GM Emulator to play any RPG you like without a GM figure. It follows the road of my previous installments the Plot Unfolding Machine and the Scene Unfolding Machine, and represents my current way of playing games right now.

UPDATE: Game Unfolding Machine v2 out now! Check it out

What does GUM include?

  • 5 Tools: Oracles, Plan Check, Intervention, Challenge, and Conflicts
  • 8 Steps process to create a game from scratch and your first scene
  • Meta-tool to design interesting scenes and content for your PCs
  • 10 tailored random tables that aim for an all-in-one solo experience
  • Advice for playing solo RPG, and all my love of months of work
  • One-pager with a compact version of the tools to play conveniently
I really hope you like this toolbox for playing Solo RPGs, and it may be used to play with friends, or be used to generate amazing adventures for your groups too!

Difference between PUM, GUM, and SUM?

PUM is a GM emulator, SUM is a supplement for any GM emulators, and GUM v2 is a set of abstract random tables and generators. You can use all three together, or however you prefer with other systems.

Difference between GUM v1 and GUM v2?

GUM v1 is a bulky all-in-one GM emulator that went a bit over the board. It tried to do everything and encompasses everything I ever played around with in my homebrews. GUM v2 is a concrete content generator that works better along PUM and SUM and has a better defined purpose, representing my current vision for it.

This video explains these differences much better.

Donations really welcome, to bundle these rules together, it took me tremendous amount of effort, trial and error, and a lot of testing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, share with others if you like, and your feedback and donation are welcome!

Hey just a heads up to the creator. Your onepager for both this and the base GUM are missing a table. Instead of having NPC Identity and NPC Detail, they have the Identity table on there twice even though the second one is titled as NPC Detail.

I like your work. Very good stuff.

Hey Brian, big thanks. That duplicate table was a big fail, will fix asap. Regarding the missing locations table, ran out of space for it, had to sacrifice on of them. Design will be on my todo if this booklet gets do well :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
