What They're Saying About The Lair of the Leopard Empresses

"Awesome beautiful swords & sorcery gaming"
- Ken St Andre, creator of the Monsters! Monsters!, Tunnels & Trolls, & Stormbringer RPGs

"The Lair of the Leopard Empresses is a stand-alone swords & sorcery RPG powered by Monsters! Monsters! It is a thing of beauty... Sarah Newton has revealed the path to take is both old and new. To say The Lair of the Leopard Empresses is inspirational doesn't do it justice. The first thing I did after it went live for sale on DTRPG was order a print copy. It quite simply is that good."
- Erik Tenkar, Tenkar's Tavern

"Yay, one of my favourite authors and publishers is back on the scene - and doesn't disappoint!
"Newton really excels at concise, atmospheric and flat-out funny descriptions of setting elements... it really makes me pump my fist - YES, that's how you do a proper fantasy RPG! ..."Most of all, have FUN writing it and let it show... The setting clearly flows from a love of the rules system, but it's also obvious how the setting then has changed the system, and how actual play has lead to tweaks and clarifications. The result is a beautifully organic whole that really just makes me want to play it."
- Swanosaurus Blog

"Lair of the Leopard Empresses is a magnificent product... The world is rich and well detailed. The art is beautiful and evocative. The Monsters! Monsters! system is perfectly paired with the Ximuria setting. And most of all, this is the best explanation of the details and mechanics of Monsters! Monsters! (or Tunnels and Trolls mechanics) ever published... Sarah Newton's expositions and examples, as well as the use of them in the creation of the creatures, is the best "DM's Guide" to this family of games ever created... Ten thumbs up for this amazing product!"
- Mark, DriveThruRPG

The illustrations used in this book were drafted and initially generated by a professional artist using the commercial version of the Midjourney tool, then manually manipulated, assembled, corrected, and processed in post-production by the same artist. No artist names were used in prompts. All illustrations were paid for at the RPG market rate.

As a creator here on DTRPG, I'm not allowed to leave reviews, so I'm going to give my thoughts here under Discussions.

Lair of the Leopard Empresses is a magnificent product from several perspectives. The world is rich and well detailed. The art is beautiful and evocative. The Monsters! Monsters! system is perfectly paired with the Ximuria setting.

And most of all, this is the best explanation of the details and mechanics of Monsters! Monsters! (or Tunnels and Trolls mechanics) ever published. The fine works of Thessaly Chance Tracy have also given good write ups of how to employ the rules in play, but Sarah Newton's expositions and examples, as well as the use of them in the creation of the creatures is the best "DM's Guide" to this family of games ever created.

Ximuria is a richly detailed world, and may well be daunting to a new DM. I know it was a lot for me to take on all at once when starting my own LotLE campaign. I nibbled around the edges first, and ran...See more

Hello, want to get this, but after reading the M!M! rules the past couple days have some questions first.

M!M! seems to leave out a lot of seemingly essential rules, and I want to make sure that this ruleset actually explains them.
1. M!M! has rules for using MR. But has zero explanation for how to determine MR, how MR correlates to Level or how to figure what a fully statted character's MR would be (and vice versa) Is this fully fleshed out in these rules? Does it give a formula to convert between the two?
2. None of the creatures in M!M! list an MR range, so there isn't even any reference point to ballpark or reverse engineer what MRs should be (i.e. well a grizzly has this MR, so my sabretooth should be roughly...). Does Empresses have suggested MRs or MR ranges listed for all the creatures in the game? Does it have relatable real world creatures to use as a gauge?
3. M!M! mentioned creatures' natural weapons (teeth, claws etc...), but fails to give the damage dice for most of...See more

I just read the entire preview and see that not only do you have a small example MR table, but you mention the bestiary is full of MR ratings and give excellent examples and explanations. I have to say it's really well-worded and clear. Just reading your preview actually cleared up some ambiguity with the M!M! book.
I imagine the rest of the book is just as quality.

EDIT: Before I order though I want to make sure there aren't any errata/proofreading corrections about to be added I should wait on are there? If so I'd rather wait for the updated version to be available. Thanks

Hi Seth - thanks for the great words, and glad to hear you're considering buying LAIR OF THE LEOPARD EMPRESSES. This is just to confirm that the existing files are the latest version of the game and we have no file updates planned in the near future. Welcome to Ximuria!

Sounds good. Just ordered the hardback. Also wanted to say that Monsters & Magic is probably the best ruleset of all the OSR re-imaginings I've read and own (and that is a lot), so excited to see what you've done here. I also had Capharnaum arrive yesterday, but haven't had a chance to open it yet. Thanks

Is there a good place to ask questions about mechanics? There are a couple of things I'd like to clear up, but don't want to bog down this page with them.

Any plans for an economic softcover version? The yen doesn't go very far these days...

Hi Timothy - not at this stage, no. LAIR is a big book - 400 pages - and we really want to make sure customers get the best experience with their physical book, and the hardback option seems to be sturdier and generally more durable. We're going to provide a softback option on the upcoming Player's Guide, however, and our experiences with that may encourage us to experiment a little! Thank you for your interest in LAIR OF THE LEOPARD EMPRESSES!

Just wanted to mention that Monsters! Monsters! is now Ken St Andre's main focus since he no longer owns the rights to Tunnels and Trolls. So although I can't speak to the author's reasons for going with this ruleset, to my mind it is a way of supporting the tradition of T&T, the second-oldest RPG of all.

Really interesting game, I picked it up on a whim and am excited by the potential of running it solo. I'm sorry it's getting caught up in the purity crusade about AI art, which it absolutely does not deserve. Are there any plans for expansions? I'd love to see more about Xinqari culture and how they function.

Hi Richard - thank you for purchasing Lair of the Leopard Empresses, I'm very glad you're enjoying it! Yes, we have plans for future supplements - right now we have a solo adventure, a GM adventure, and a sandboxy campaign set in the Helwast in development, as well as a Player's Guide. All the best - for Wrath and Wragna, the King and Queen of Old! :)

I also have to say that "The Lair of the Leopard Empress" is really well done! Funnily enough, one of my first thoughts when reading it was that there should be a dimensional portal to the Bermuda Triangle in the 1930s off the coast of Ximuria, because the continent would certainly also make an excellent pulp setting. :D

Hi Ulises - we'll look into that. Obviously there's a printable one at the back of the PDF which we'll shortly post here and on the website, but we'll look into making a fillable one too. Thanks for your feedback! (y)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
