Dungeon Vault Magazine - No. 33 - Shadowdark Edition

Dungeon Vault Magazine - Issue 33

Published by Elven Tower

This is issue No. 33 of Dungeon Vault Magazine. A compilation of adventures, lore, excellent cartography, and useful digital goodies. The content in this magazine is designed for use with Shadowdark RPG rules.

Dungeon Vault Magazine is all about providing interesting ideas and lore to DMs and storytellers. Within this issue, you will find varied adventure ideas.

These short modules do not stick to a unified template of sections. Instead, they are organically created and follow their own pace. The types of modules you can expect are city/town settings, regional settings, dungeons, outdoor locations, encounter maps, and one-page adventures.

Dungeon Vault Magazine No. 33 is an independent product published under the Shadowdark RPG Third-Party License and is not affiliated with The Arcane Library, LLC. Shadowdark RPG © 2023 The Arcane Library, LLC.

I bought both of these plus a number of your standalone one-shots. It would be nice if you actually had a table of contents so I didn't double purchase modules that are in this compliation. I like the material, but I feel a bit ripped-off considering I bought 4 one-shots, which is money that could be spent elsewhere.

Hello Tobin, the table of contents can be found in both small and large previews on this page. I'm assuming you are expecting/requesting that it is also in printed form in the product description. I'm really sorry for the duplicated sales. Please contact me at derek (at) elventower (dotcom) to sort this out. I can either reimburse you for the duplicated purchases or I could send you other material you're interested in, your choice.

Can this be used with old school systems, or is it kind of locked into the Shadow dark rpg? I'm not familiar with it.

The adventures are designed for Sahdowdark RPG. That system is designed to be compatible with both 5e and OSR systems with little conversion. In the past we used to write content for 5e but in my home games we've been playing OSE and Into the Odd for a while. We've written these adventures with experience in both mindsets. That said, you don't have to go in blind. If you visit our free blog you can see a few of the adventures found in these magazines as a free preview. Read a few and make up your mind whether the conversion is small enough for your home game to manage. The blog is in www (dot) elventower (dotcom)

Might feel like a bit of a nitpick, but in the Boleshivka village there is a random event where the biggest pig gets loose requiring a DC 14 Strength check. Per the DMG, a DC 14 Strength check is Medium difficulty for an average human. Pigs are far far larger than the average human, much less the biggest pig, even accounting for the size difference between modern and medieval pigs. I think this event should be adjusted to the DC 15-20 range (Hard) at the bare minimum.

Hi, there Xevi, thanks for your feedback. I'll write this in for the next edition-run for this magazine so it gets added.

Remember, these are for shadowdark. Max DC listed is 18.

I had a conversation with Kelsey a few weeks ago about the listed DCs for checks. She said it is a fragile standard and that intermediate and higher DCs are available. As an example, the archdevil features a DC20 CHA check in the monsters' section. I searched around and that is the only example for such a thing but Kelsey let me know that it was not a mistake.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
