Planetary Tales: Science Fantasy Role-Playing Game

Planetary Tales is a science fantasy roleplaying game inspired by the planetary romance tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard in turn of the century pulps such as Argosy, Planet Stories, and Weird Tales. Additionally, the posthumous barbarian fiction novel Warrior of the Altaii by Robert Jordan provided further inspiration and reference material. In these high adventure “sword and planet” stories, the protagonists are mysteriously transported to alien worlds, meet unlikely allies, and find danger lurking in every corner.

One player takes on the role of the Narrator, creating a familiar yet alien world, the humanoid people that inhabit it, and the threats that they face. The remaining players take the role of Travelers, humans who have gone on a magic carpet ride (figuratively or literally) to this strange new world and decide to answer the call to adventure.

Planetary Tales is played using one to three twelve-sided dice per player, referred to as the d12. The Narrator sets the scene and presents the Travelers with a challenge that must be overcome in order to move forward. Challenges have a Difficulty rating and use a Target Number (TN) ranging from 11 to 1 that the players must roll equal to or under to continue with their journey. In order to do so,  Travelers have 3 options to help them succeed:

  1. Experiences from their former life on Earth such as their Background, Upbringing, or a even a firmly held Conviction to reduce the Difficulty of a challenge, increasing the TN to roll under by 2.
  2. Talents which are listed underneath their Attributes and allow them to roll an extra d12, keeping the lowest result. These cover physical, mental, and social categories and are equivalent to skills.
  3. Effort, a temporary sacrifice of points from their Attributes pools, which allows them to divide their d12 roll, referred to as Div#. Starting at 2 points of Effort for Div2, 1 more point for Div3, 1 more to reach Div4, and then 2 final points to reach Div6. In total, a Traveler can spend 6 points of Effort to increase their chance at success!

I decided to publish Planetary Tales for PocketQuest 2023 for the exact same reason as Camp Chivalry last year, it seemed fun! I hope you enjoy playing it!

This reads like an enjoyable little game. It was a bit hard to figure out how damage works. There is a reference to Wits damage under "Conviction" so i assume physical damage affect Might? There is damage stat listed for weapons on p.7, is that the amount damage taken to Might? If so, it seems quite deadly.

Hi Marius,
Thanks for checking out my game and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it! I'll admit that I need to do another pass on the writing to clarify some things. To answer your question: yes, physical attacks cause damage to Might. A character having to Break their Conviction causes them to take Wits damage. As of right now nothing damages Skill, but that will change when I update the game. It's meant to be pretty deadly with the characters getting slowly broken down as they fight, but you can mitigate that with armor (which acts as damage reduction) and you can always recover by resting.

If you have any other questions or comments please feel free to let me know and I'll answer them!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
