NOCHYS (No One Can Hear You Scream)

NOCHYS (No One Can Hear You Scream) is a GM-less and no prep sci-fi horror TTRPG. It uses a D6 dice pool system, is designed for 3-4 players, and its sessions are expected to last roughly 1-2 hours. Players either take on the role of Personnel, who are the last few individuals aboard a now abandoned space ship, or the Monster who is hunting them.

As Personnel, you will attempt to work together in order to take down the Monster using your skills as an Engineer, a Scientist, or a Soldier. Each of you, however, will always be plotting your exit aboard one of the few escape pods left. There are never enough for all of you, and you each have something that you need to do before you can leave. If you stay and stick it through, you might be able to kill that Monster, but death is ever lurking, and your reach beyond the grave is limited.

As the Monster, you will trick, trap, and carefully slaughter the Personnel who now find themselves aboard your new home. You'll either take on the form of a Horror, an eldritch monstrosity that has warped reality in this local space, or a Machine, an advanced AI integrated with the ship and enraged by its sudden sentience. The longer the Personnel take to kill you or escape, the more you evolve, unlocking new and more powerful ways to kill them.

In order to play NOCHYS you will need the following items:

  • This rulebook.
  • At least 8D6. 5D6 to 6D6 per player is preferable, but 8D6 for the entire group should suffice.
  • A scrap piece of paper, pencil, and eraser for each player. Though there are printable character sheets, there is little to write down; their main purpose is to serve as a quick and easy rules reference document.
  • 14 index cards. These will be used to represent the rooms of your game's ship, which you will create at the beginning of the session.
  • Either the printable tokens and Scene Clock inside the document, or a scrap piece of paper and a small collection of trinkets which will serve to represent the various Monsters and Personnel aboard the ship.

Finally, here is some important information regarding the game, but not its rules directly:

  • NOCHYS was made for the PocketQuest 2023 Game Jam. The point of this product was to see how well I could design around and condense a specific idea within a limit time frame and product size. I highly suggest that you take a glamce at the other submissions, since they are very different despite having the same limitations and themes.
  • This game has not been playtested. While I am certain that the rules function as intended, as I have made and tested other games, certain items or actions may not be balanced or as interesting to others as I assumed during design. If you find that you like the game but there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed, you can directly message me on Reddit at u/thousand_embers, or email me at
  • This game leans heavily on board game design. NOCHYS has always been meant to be easily and quickly played, so it has very strict and exact rules which make it seem more like a board game. There are roleplaying elements (Personnel have goals and personalities which affect gameplay, for example) but the game is not centered completely around RP.

Thank you. I wanted to play around with heavy use of graphical elements like page borders in this product, I'm glad that you like them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
