Does this function as a supplement for classic fantasy, a replacement or an alternative?

Its a bit of all three! CFI is a standalone game, trimmed down from the core Classic Fantasy Rules. It contains some new content, and it doesn't need the core rules, or Mythras, to fully enjoy.

Will the Unearthed book completely replace this for a GM, or will it be additional resources and still require F.I. as a base?

From what I've heard, the Unearthed book will be a supplement, adding on to the original Classic Fantasy Book, not a replacement for this.

When I add the PDF to my cart it auto-removes it within half a second?!??!

I can't seem to click quickly enough to get it to the point I can download it.

I'll add that I am logged into my DriveThruRPG account. Also even if I put in $100.00 it still flashes then a fraction of a second later removed the PDF from my cart.

Will this with the Advanced book be a complete game or will anything else be needed?

It'll be an even more complete game. :)

Classic Fantasy Imperative is pretty complete as it is, but Unearthed Companion will add more bells and whistles. However, Unearthed Companion will NOT be ORC Licensed.

Hi Lawrence, will Unearthed Companion contain an expanded bestiary and more materials to assist the GM?

@Nicholas, I can probably answer that one. Yes. There will be a literal ton of new monsters, spells, and magic items in the Companion. I suggest stretching before lifting it.

Are you all still using the hard to read font type that's faint and has ligatures?

Fortunately, no. Looking over my PDF, the text seems to be much clearer than in the Classic Fantasy book.

I decided to download it, the font does look better, still a bit small but it is an improvement over previous versions, agreed. :)

Does this mean we're getting a new version of Classic Fantasy, possibly incorporating all five ranks of advancement into a single volume? If not, when are we getting the book for ranks 4 and 5?

The book with Rank 4 and 5 spells is the Unearthed Companion, which is coming out at the end of this year, beginning of next. However, there are a slew of Rank 4 and 5 spells in Classic Fantasy Imperative, albeit for the cleric and magic-user. Hope that helps. A book with all five ranks of spells is something we have talked about, but it would be way down the road.

Thanks for the reply and the information. I have also noticed a couple of things different in the Imperative version beyond just the simplifications, one definitely a good thing, and others I'm just curious about (not complaining, just wondering if I missed something in an update or even the original):

1) Reduced Class Skill requirements: In the version of Classic Fantasy that I have, the minimum for five class skills was 50% to reach rank 1 in a class, whereas here it's 40%. Is this a misprint or is it a change (either in updating the original Classic Fantasy or Expert Set, or new to this volume).

2) Growing Hit Points and Action Points: I have also noticed that, seemingly new to this Imperative version, Hit Points and Action Points grow with rank as well, gaining a new HP or AP on ranks 2 and 4, while just reducing the luck bonuses by one, so you actually only start to grow in luck points at rank 2 and on. I can see the reduced luck growth as a rebalancing thing, but the growth of HP...See more

There are a lot of little balancing things throughout Imperative. Some of which will be in the Companion as well. However, the Companion needed to remain compatible with Classic Fantasy core, so they will be less noticeable.

With that said, any of the changes can easily be transferred over to the core system if desired. Likewise, there is nothing in the core system that cannot be transfered over to Imperative. Obviously, this applies to monsters and treasure as well.

The 40% skill minimum is a change that is also coming in the Companion for example. Because Imperative is to be self-contained, I was able to have more leeway with "experimental" features that "may" become the norm at some future point if the fans like them.

With Action Points, I changed the starting points from being based on DEX and INT to a flat 2. So, by the time you get your first bonus point at Rank 2, you will be where you would have "typically" started before. And you...See more

I think the best way to describe Classic Fantasy Imperative, is a version of Classic Fantasy including all of the house rules the author has added to his game over the course of the last 5 or so years.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
