The City Beyond the Portal - A Science Fiction OSR System and Mini Setting

Selected Option:
A city. Alone in an endless desert. Once built by an alien race and then abandoned. In its halls, the machines still hum, the automatons perform their tasks, and water flows in the aqueducts from sources in the depths. It was to this crumbling city that the predecessors arrived four generations ago, fleeing through a portal from a doomed fate. With time, their descendants multiplied and thrived. However, with the means they have, they cannot leave the city. But the city has plenty to offer: intrigues between the factions, a dangerous ecology, strange destinations, and a mysterious history. And most important of all. It has treasures to scavenge for the bold.

The City Beyond the Portal is an OSR system and a compact science-fiction setting inspired by Franco-Belgian SF comics, a post-apocalyptic DIY attitude, and a love for weird and speculative exobiology. It contains plenty to get someone inspired and started, but not so much that it stifles the creative need to play around with the setting at your table, which is highly encouraged.

Buy The City Beyond the Portal if you want a full and light rules system with a dense setting divided into six destinations, individual encounter tables, four character prototypes (each with three specializations), creatures, equipment, travel rules, treasure tables, an NPC generator, and more.

From a rules perspective, The City Beyond the Portal is inspired by the games Black Hack, Black Sword Hack, Deathbringer, Knave, Mörk Borg, Old School Essentials, The Electrum Archive, and The Vast in the Dark. It is a labor of love in many ways, and I hope you like it, too.

Hey, could you post a one sheet PDF version instead of just spreads?

Hey Christopher, the PDF is exported as single pages, so if you go to the file's properties in your PDF program, you can probably change it to "Single Page Continuous" in "View." However, I have uploaded an updated version (v18) with a single-page view for your convenience, which you can download through your library.

Thanks for pointing it out. I think it’s an issue with the new web design. On the original drivethrurpg page, I see both the quick- and full-size preview. I’ll put up some images of the spreads until they resolve the issue.

You can get it here! I just needed to wait for the proof print, so it should be available now.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
