ENNIE AWARDS 2024 JUDGES' SPOTLIGHT WINNER!!!

Advancing army of black-hooded undead figures.

On the arctic frontier, at the border between the mountains and the wastes beyond, looms Castle Thar-Gannon. For centuries, the Skull God ruled his domain from his blackened throne. But twenty years have passed since the routing of his armies, and the castle lies abandoned with riches unclaimed. Yet, death still lurks in the shadows of the ruins. An ancient doom arises from the depths of this place...

Gods of the Forbidden North is a massive, three-volume mega-adventure series written for the Old-School Essentials: Advanced Fantasy tabletop role-playing game by Necrotic Gnome. It details a campaign setting, a wilderness hex-crawl, a sprawling underworld connecting to multiple entrances on the surface, and most importantly, an enormous megadungeon.

  • Volume 1: The first book covers the arctic frontier's settlements, cultures, religions, and its vast wilderness regions. It includes 1 urban starter quest and 5 low-level dungeons.
  • Volume 2: The second book details the underworld below the continent's surface, demihuman cultures, plutonian settlements, 4 mid-level dungeons, 1 urban investigation adventure, and 1 high-level dungeon.
  • Volume 3: The third book explores the last undescribed hex on the wilderness map (hex 10.02) that contains the legendary Castle Thar-Gannon megadungeon, its upper and lower halls, 3 mysterious towers, and 3 vast dungeon levels. It also includes the Cyclopean City of Chaos, with 23 unique tower dungeons, plus the secret entrance into the Tesseract of Time.

The 480-page first volume is designed for a heroic party of 6-8 adventurers to begin at 1st level and reach a minimum of 5th level by the book's conclusion, although most parties will hit 8th level if all wilderness encounters are exhausted. Though the mega-adventure was originally designed as a sandbox campaign, it also supports episodic adventure path playstyles, as well.

Wilderness Map of Arctic Frontier

Adventure Summary

The adventure begins with the heroes arriving by ship in Valkengard. They secretly possess a valuable artifact called the Eye of J’karaa, said to be a key into the inner vault of Morkaal’s Tomb. But the heroes are being pursued by a black magician named Zarcand. After the party arrives in the city and finds lodging in the Brick Mammoth Inn, they are lured into an ambush and must fight to save themselves, protect the Eye, and kill Zarcand. Then, the heroes decide if they should rescue a fellow passenger’s wife and son from the bowels of Valkengard’s underworld—a chance to further explore the new port city.

In “Morkaal’s Tomb,” the heroes finally locate and enter the infamous dungeon. Overcoming devious traps and powerful monsters, the party breaches the inner vault and discovers that the legendary Morkaal no longer sleeps within his sarcophagus, as they claim his ancient treasures.

As the party returns from their expedition to the tomb, a new enemy sends the Slavers of Shuun to attack the heroes in retribution for past actions. This leads the party to the “Bog-Ruins of Fort Ikenvar,” where the slavers are encamped. Defeating the brutal foreigners, the heroes learn that the Shuun feared something stalking the fort’s eastern island—and, if explored, the party faces a monstrosity from another reality: the Guzzler. They also behold the green, glowing, Inilgaan idol of a primeval entity that slumbers at the very edge of the cosmos.

Obtaining the Shuun’s notes about the region, the party gains several leads to other adventure sites, which they might tackle in any order as they please—the “Barrow of Eight,” an undead burial site of a cursed warrior king; the “Lost Temple of Ninchaga,” a ruined temple of the primitive Emeqist religion; and the “Watcher on the Water,” Vartoriak, a high, mysterious tower on misty Lake Helvarragh, wherein a deranged cult seeks entry into the tower’s impenetrable peak.

Throughout the entire wilderness, the heroes encounter dozens of potential quests and minor story arcs planted therein which may serve as exciting distractions from the module’s core storyline: getting hired by the evil Mazos the Kindly One to fetch items and explore nearby ruins; chasing open bounties on outlaws, gangs, and pirates; getting involved with (or opposing) the growing secret Enoruuk resistance; infiltrating the Fellowship of the Smiling Cloth in Valkengard; wiping out the Cult of the Magoth in their hidden Brass Temple; retrieving the two halves of a magic bone-sword and seeking a way to destroy it; resurrecting Sularuq the lost Tempest Bird; destroying the skeletal dragon, Brakkakhan, and the eight roving demons of the North—the Tarngrak.

Hi Matthew,

V2 came out on Nov. 4th just a few weeks ago. V3 launches on Kickstarter this upcoming February. It should be released in a year, probably around Christmas 2025 (or possibly sooner).

Hi Pirate,

This is for Old-School Essentials: Advanced Fantasy (which is basically a retroclone of B/X D&D). However, Shadowdark is a mix of 5E and B/X, so it's not too hard to convert on the fly. I've had a lot of backers tell me that they are running the game using SD instead of OSE and they are not only having a great time, but they find the conversion easy overall. I actually did a conversion myself and ran "Bog-Ruins of Fort Ikenvar" using SD rules, and it was a cinch!

Hi Robert,

Is there an errata document that includes all the changes since the FIRST printing? (Not just the 3rd) I purchased an early POD copy+pdf and, while I have the most up to date pdf downloaded, I would love to "update" the POD book by printing and sticking the relevant errata excerpts at the start of each chapter.

Will all 3 books (when they are done) be available for purchase in their Offset Printing versions with the slipcase somewhere online?

As great as Print on Demand books are, they are often 'lacking' IMO in the quality of the paper used and I'd much rather buy your trilogy in it's Offset version.

Since I only just learned about the books and missed KS#1&2 I 'assume' the above will be an option for KS#3 yes?

Yes, I should have leftovers for sale. I will eventually set up my website to handle that business. The trilogy ending Kickstarter for Volume 3 launches on Tuesday, April 1st and runs until Thursday, May 1st. You'll be able to get all three offset print books then, for sure!

Although I will say that I've been very, very pleased with OneBookShelf's POD service. Their books are sturdily made. For example, the first volume is 480 pages and I have heard nothing but good things from everyone that got one.

..And my copies? Boy, they thiccccc! Lol.

TY the prompt replay and info and I'll go all in on the April Fools kickstarter ;-).

I find the binding good on the OneBookShelf books as well, it's just to my taste, even the 'premium' paper is a bit to thin. I don't want to see any trace of the text or art on the back of the page showing however faintly on the facing page.

I came across this by pure chance and wow it seems to have a bit of everything I would love to run. I know you said that POD will return sometime in March with some updates done do you have an idea of the cost (besides delivery as it will be different for everyone based on delivery and weight) Also I assume this would work well with B/X and other systems like that? I would love to run it though Shadowdark and change a couple things when needing to be, as I know people run OSE stuff with Shadowdark with little to no changes. Thanks again for for any help or info :-)

Hi Ciaran,

Thanks for the high praise! The hardcover will be $64.99 as a POD option once it goes live again. However, you can get BOTH pod options as part of our upcoming Kickstarter (plus all the digital support files that go with them) for $79 plus shipping.

We'll also offer a premium offset print run option during the Kickstarter, as well, for $99 (for both volumes plus all digital support content).

Just want to throw that out there as an option for you.

All Best,
Rob, PHP

P.S. Old-School Essentials: Advanced Fantasy is a retroclone of B/X D&D but with a few 1e-isms sprinkled into it, so they are almost exactly the same. (I think the main differences is the inclusion of a few extra classes and the option to divide race-from-class, if desired. So, there are Druid and Illusionist spells/classes, plus Drow, Duergar, etc.) Check out Necrotic Gnome's website for the complete list of differences.

Yes! My plan is to take the finished errata document that I'll be sending to Glynn Seal (who's going to re-do the layout of the first book), turn it into a PDF, and send it out to everyone as a product update. That way you aren't missing anything. And, of course, if you want a new copy of the first book down the road, send me an email (robert@pulphummock.com) and I'll sell you it at cost + shipping.

A great product im loving it but the hex map...... I just cant understand it, I only could decipher it by using the B&W map that is in the book, which in my opinion is far better than the PNG files, not only is actually understandable but aesthetically better. In fact I wish it was included among the illustrations in the pack, I would rather use them in my online games.

Dear Leopoldo,

You are 100% correct! And guess what? We have finally finished the new wilderness maps to address this issue. (Literally this morning, ha!)

I am about to send out the updated map files to everyone who purchased this product. Very soon, too, the actual PDF and Print book files will be updated with the new maps inside them, plus all known errata that we (and the fans) have discovered over the last 6 months.

You should see the maps as separate downloadable files in the next few hours.

Dear Gábner,

The cultures are definitely open to other races. Originally, I had intended to include the demihuman race content, but decided the book was big enough and withheld that information. One of the ideas was that the demihumans have their own specific cultures; however, many of them have lived among the human cultures so much that they have adopted (partly or in full) their customs.

So, definitely wiggle room there for any PC character to be a part of these cultures.

The Enoruuk are likely the most "human-centric," just because they are found in the North only (at least, for the most part). But there might still be some demihumans who are found among them, especially in Kangkul.

The Hadeans dominated so many other cultures over their empire's reign that many demihumans are just as "Hadean" (or more so) as the humans.

Hope that helps!

Very Best,
Rob, PHP

Hello Robert!

Wow, man, it was so good, up to the task. Thank you very much, and congratulations on the successful financing of Volume II!

I've already started running it and we have 9 sessions. Personally, I really like it.

Taking advantage, a question: are the clerics and paladins that exist only those from the Hadean Temple? I know there are Magoth, ok, but I thought maybe they are an exception.

Long live the Gods of the Forbidden North and you, my friend.

Hi Gábner,

I had developed a world calendar but, due to spacing limitations, pulled it from the final product. Any calendar you want should work. The timeline for the module's history is written in negative years for that reason: -4 years means 4 years before the campaign starts, etc.

Hope that helps!

Hope you find a group online. (I actually play on Roll20 and might be firing up a game soon.)

I backed this project on kickstarter and have finally read through this beast of a book (and eagerly await a print copy).

This really blew me away. The sheer amount of content here is substantial to the say the least, but the writing style is so competent that it never feels like a slog. We are given everything you could want to run an open-world sandbox style game in a truly unique and evocative setting (a frigid colonial outpost with strong sword-and-sorcery and lovecraftian vibes) with the promise of an underdark and megadungeon to follow! There are plot-hooks aplenty, with a high-density of the hexes of this map containing interesting locations, dungeons, and encounters (all of which elicit the vivid history of this setting). The more substantial dungeons and other points of interest are well-conceived and detailed.

Even though there is a mountain of material, the writing and layout are so well executed, that it's easy to find what you're looking for, and I very much expect it to...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
