Are there any plans for rules on playing non-human characters, like aliens or robots?

No, I'm afraid there isn't. But it is generally, compatible with all other Cepheus Engine products, as well as lots of books and supplements from 'that famous 2D6 sci-fi game from the 1970s that licensing precludes me from mentioning'!

Given the OGL licence I think you could write and publish your own.

What are the differences/additions to your earlier "1970s 2D6 Retro Rules"?

This is an excellent ruleset, but I have one question: on p. 64, Kris Armatt has a High Passage — where did it come from? Unless I missed something, the Characters chapter only mentions buying equipment. I take it one can also buy an unspecified High (or Middle, or Low) Passage, but there’s nothing in the text before now to indicate that. So for “Equipment”, should we read “anything reasonably available in this book with a price attached”?

Over on the Zozer Games website you'll find some free PDFs, one of which is Playing Solo Classic Traveller. That is the source of a lot of the solo content in this PDF, only it assumes you're playing by the original LBB character creation rules, including mustering out benefits one of which was, you guessed it, High Passage. Kris Armatt gained his High Passage and character backstory via the character creation process detailed in that free PDF. Why this version of the ruleset omitted the complete character creation rules in favor of the quick but less detailed rules used in HOSTILE Solo I do not know but I would definitely recommend getting those older, free PDFs from Zozer's website to supplement this product.

If you are looking for a Classic Traveller Retro-Clone this is it!
Very well done and complete.
Just one question: shouldn't Strength affect melee combat the way Dexterity affects missile combat? Or am I missing something?
Hoping for more to follow

I was trying to minimise too many DMs on the roll, but it is a good idea to add that bonus just as it is implemented in the ranged combat rules.

Thank you!
If your intent was to clone the original game, as I thought, you may want to add a paragraph that alludes vaguely to ways players can improve their character skills

Possible error: I think the DM for Defensive Shields should be +2 under "Procedure Step 2 - Avoid Being Hit" on p.16, not the -2 listed; otherwise, it doesn't make sense to me that Defensive Shields would make it easier for you to be hit as they do not appear to grant any other advantage.

Clariftication: I'm assuming the "-1 for each for every bank of operating turrets" from the same section refers to the enemy's ship (that is trying to hit the players). Is this correct?

Overall, system looks great so far. Thanks!

Yes, in that stage all of the DMs are reversed from the step of Hitting an enemy ship.

How robust are the solo rules? Is it similar to the Zozer SOLO edition of the Cepheus engine that was released a few years ago?

No it is slightly different, it starts with character generation and follows world building as a solo exercise weaving in the stories and actions of your character. As he progresses you add additional setting. It does use the Plan from Solo.

That’s a nice idea! It’s hard to gauge the interest in the Autonomous setting compared to the rules themselves. I’ll keep my eye on the sales, and see if there is a demand for future follow up Retro Sci-Fi material …

I think in the Task resolution section you should break down how Characteristics modify a task and point out that Skill level is added to the 2d6 roll as you do in the Combat chapter. I'm not very experienced with Traveller or Cepheus and I think those change would be very helpful.

Great product though.

Hi Mark,
I kept it simple and did not mention characteristics being used during skill checks. I could rationalise it by saying your characteristics helped or hindered your learning of the skill, and that skill value is your current ability factoring everything in. Well, that's my rationale, anyway! Its also the way the old 77 rules worked, too. If you wanted to add characteristics back in, then copy what happens in combat, where key characteristic of 9+ gets you a +1, while if its 5- you get a -1. That echoes the Cepheus/Mongoose way of doing things, although with the Retro method of picking your characteristics, you could aim for that 9 threshold to get that 9 bonus in a characteristic you think you'll be using a lot. Saying that, its easy to swap around the characteristics you pair with a skill, based on the particular situation. I might add that in as an option... thanks!

Does the solo rules differ from Solo or Hostile Solo?

Paul E October 15, 2023 9:35 am UTC

Yes. They are cut down, the Plan mechanic is included with advice and inspiration tables to roll on as an oracle. The solo chapter helps you play as you build a setting, expanding out from one world.

Does skill check resolution of this game match the older version in the way characteristics interact with skills? Or is it closer to the way Cepheus does skill checks?

Skill checks are skill + 2D6 for a difficulty set by the Referee. If they are unsure, a roll of 2D6 to create the difficulty can be made. Its a more old school, flexible method.

To piggyback on this topic I don't think the rules state that you add your skill level to the 2D6 roll. I assumed it did since I have experience with other 2D6 games but it might be super confusing for a completely new player. Is this a goof or did I miss something somewhere else?

"To overcame a challenge or complete a task, the player will be rolling 2D6 and must try to equal or exceed a target number created by the Referee. The Referee decides on the difficulty of the task on a scale from 2 to 12; 3 is easy, 7 is moderate (avoiding red tape, for example), 9 difficult (perhaps landing a spacecraft in bad weather) and 12 formidable He must also decide on a skill or skills that will prove relevant. If stuck for ideas, the Referee can roll 2D6 to create a random difficulty number. Tasks can be abbreviated to Pilot 6+, for example."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
