Plot Unfolding Machine

The Plot Unfolding Machine (PUM) is a GM Emulator that enables you to play any Tabletop RPG you like without a game master. By taking over some GM calls, you can play RPGs by yourself, or with your friends, without anybody being exclusively the GM! PUM helps you come up with scene ideas, challenges, and stakes for your PCs to fight for.

What stands between your characters and their goals? Who is opposing them, and how? What happens next?. These are questions PUM helps you answer, moving your game forward. Let PUM make the important decisions in your games through oracles and questions, and play to figure out what it tries to tell you.

Plot Unfolding Machine is an innovative way to play those tabletop roleplaying games you love at your own pace, without need for preparation. Just build your characters, print your preferred PUM sheets, and get going! Through asking questions and rolling dice in random tables, you'll figure out how your plot unfolds.

By placing conflict at the center of the adventure, you'll find your characters having to fight for their goals, interact with your world-building aspects, and have your RPG system to actually matter. PUM's main goal is to bring solo RPG players back to the playing seat, lowering your GM authorship effort when playing.

Quick comparison with Mythic GM Emulator

Where Mythic relies a lot on your expectation for every next scene, PUM gives you a prompt to work from, allowing you to play with way less "expectations" about where your game goes. On top of that, PUM fits in a single page, including all oracles and plot element needs, where Mythic is probably a bit more comprehensive.

PUM could be for you if you enjoy fast-paced play, where you don't have to think hard about where to drive your game to, or what happens next. PUM includes many evocative oracles and scene ideas to get your game going without getting stuck.

Quick comparison of * Unfolding Machine products

  • Plot Unfolding Machine: One-page system, compact all-in-one GM emulator to play it on its own, narrative driven. Focus in unfolding story-driven games with a plot.
  • Game Unfolding Machine: 30 Pages of abstract and game creation tables, not really an emulator. "Use what you need" by design. Goes well with any other solo systems, but includes basic oracles too. Helps with content for your games.
  • Scene Unfolding Machine: Dedicated to emulating NPCs behavior, and GM actions. Focus on things that happen within your scenes during gameplay.

Do you know that your three books are tagged as written in Spanish? Please correct it, it may cause confusion. Thanks.

Following on from my previous comments, I would also like to see an alternative journey track for heroic, survival, crisis and drama plots as they use phases not mentioned in the standard journey track. There's room for more plots too like mysteries.

This is very interesting. The Journey Track explanations was something we got very little feedback for, so the instructions got limited to only showing one of them to serve as an example for the others.

Mysteries plot is a great idea, we have some plans in the brewery for more kind of plot types in PUM, so your opinion matters a lot :)

Great product and when written too.

I am quite an experience solo RPGer and I am really excited by this product. It answers some things that have really bothered me about Mythic, Ironsworn, etc. about pacing and plot development.

Is there any chance you can add an "Big Example" document where you show the sheets being filled in?

I would love a written example of using the system. Showing your thinking at each stage of the way. I know that the instructions explain it but sometimes being shown is very powerful. I'm more of a reading than watching type of person.

GUM has an explanation of how the three products fit together. I think it would be advantageous to copy that into each of the product descriptions.

PS I've bought all three products because I am impressed with this one.

Thank you so much, Shane! - Indeed, both an example and how PUM-GUM-SUM work together must be if not the most requested element. Sometimes it is hard to stick to a "minimal" product, but in any case, with the many sheets and multiple theoretical explanations, PUM seems to be growing bigger, and not smaller :) Will pay attention to how things could be better shown and explained, your feedback is taken!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
