The Science Spellbook

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $9.99

The Science spellbook is a bold attempt to remind everyone that science is just as, if not more, fascinating than the magic in our ttrpg games. In this book we have taken real scientific concepts such as General Relativity, Quantum Mechanincs, and Classical Mechanics and turned them into over 100 spells usable in your game of 5e. The book also contains the top 3 winners of our Spell Creation Competition based on my other work The Theory of Magic. Filled with incredible art and (hopefully) spells that resemble fun this can serve as a fun source of inspiration for your spell caster, a fun new set of spells to torture your GM (or players) with, or even a jumping off point to learn more about the wonderful world of science.

Due to the author's background with a Masters in astrophysics most of the spells contained are physics based though some efforts have been made to some of the other sciences.

This title is pay what you want because I believe science should be open and free, that said in order to show your support for my work and help me continue with projects like this please show your support (even as low as $1 can help).

So, a quick question from me:

Alter Biome, if cast on another planet - especially a barren or rocky one - would it sprout a habitable area? Considering it fixes a temperature, but makes no mention of air type/quality, but does say it's protected by magic. Could be useful in a space setting, no?

Why is the file so tremendously heavy (both in file size and in terms of rendering)?

There are free PDF compression utilities on the Internet. They work great with this awesome PDF. I got my version down to 6.8 MB.

I've now reduced the file size (but as someone said it can be reduced further if you like). Thanks for pointing it out! I'd somehow managed not to notice

Was the lack of any artificer spells intentional? I feel like a lot of these would suit the class quite well.

Firstly I'll say that my spell lists are guidelines at best, arbitrary at worst, so feel free to use them however you and your GM agree is appropriate. Artificers in particular though I am not terribly familiar with and are not covered by the SRD and thus not free to use without special permission so I generally avoid them and reference to them.

I very very much do not wish to argue with a Master's in Astrophysics, but may I ask a couple of questions please? I have just purchased the Spellbook; not least because MY GOODNESS I REMEMBER THE MATHEMATICAL TREATMENT...

I got as far as page 6.

"Absolute Zero": what happens at the end of the next turn, do they somehow return to a normal temperature, or is the influx of heat of at least 273 Kelvin going to cause huge cellular damage?

"Alter Weight": where does the energy of that mass go or or come from? If it's going, is it re-directable somewhere lethal?

"Arcane Gravitational Lens": ... just light, or anything near a gravitational point that can make light go at RIGHT ANGLES!?

Skipped ahead a bit... the Faraday Cage; seeing as in some models magic is blocked by say cold iron, does the Faraday Cage also block magic?

I absolutely do not want to quash any work like this. Already it's wonderful. I might question...See more

Dont worry about arguing with my qualification lol. To broadly answer all your questions in one...these are not implementing real physics into 5e as 5e and the magic within is inherently unphysical (even the geometry is weird). Instead these are "Physics Inspired" so they take real concepts (e.g. gravitational lensing) and make a spell out of them rather than creating their realistic situations. So for gravitational lens the spell mimics the effect of gravitational lens but it doesnt actually create a new source of gravity.

This is also done because some things, when done with perfect accuracy, arent very fun. Gravitational lensing, for example, is only noticeable on such large mass and distance scales that it isnt practical. Gravitational Waves are so unnoticeable we need the worlds most accurate distance measuring tools to measure them etc.

That said if this in any way inspires you to take what I've done and make more realistic spells I think that's amazing. That absolute...See more

I jumped at the chance to grab this when I saw it on social media, even though it’s not exactly what I’m looking for. I’d really rather see mechanics for introducing real scientific innovations into the game that should have no problem existing.

I’m thinking of all the inventions and innovations that would be possible given Faerun’s tech level (which seems to be all over the place), without relying on magic. Creating traps, medicines, tools. I’ve recently started watching Dr. Stone (anime) and became very interested in the kinds of advancements that would be available in a fantasy world.

That's actually a super cool idea I hadn't thought of...might be worth considering in the future! (unless you want to develop it in which case please go ahead lol)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
