Carcosa Postcard

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Come fall with us.

In Heinrich’s Call of Cthulhu Guide to Carcosa you will discover not only a replayable solo campaign for Call of Cthulhu, 7th edition, but a schematic for generating your own personal vision of Dim Carcosa. Every sojourn into Carcosa builds upon the story developed through your earlier playthroughs. Your investigators will live, they will die, they will be damned. Beware that you do not share the same fate.

In this book, you will find:

  • An evolving solo campaign for Call of Cthulhu, 7th edition, playable with or without a Keeper.

  • Over 50 different encounters, each filled with challenges and the means to overcome them.

  • 3 full-color maps for different manifestations of the City of Carcosa.

  • Quickfire character creation rules and customizable pre-generated investigators to kickstart your exploration of Carcosa.

  • Optional rules for integrating investigators generated using Heinrich’s Call of Cthulhu Guide to Character Creation

  • Encounters that adapt to your investigator’s backstory, and conclude with one of several dramatic confrontations with the King in Yellow.

Heinrich’s Call of Cthulhu Guide to Carcosa is a role-playing product for emergent storytelling consisting of 340 pages.  Its experience is enhanced through use of Chaosium’s 7th edition Call of Cthulhu Keeper Rulebook, the Investigator’s Handbook, and Heinrich’s Call of Cthulhu Guide to Character Creation.

Just curious. Thinking about buying it, and just got a question. Is it like a choose your own adventure type of game, where you jump from paragraf to paragraf?

Correct. It is also divided into locations, with maps you can navigate. There is also a meta-story and achievements you can unlock through repeat playthroughs.

Hi! Is there a chance of getting this in an e-reader friendly compressed monochrome version? Any conversion/compression I make is still too heavy on resources for a Kindle.

Greetings Burak! Unfortunately I do not have the skill set to do this, nor am I acquainted with anyone with those skills. If that changes, I would definitely look into it! This is unfortunately one of the pitfalls for me of being a community content creator!

I'm currently running this for a friend, and it's been great so far. I do have a couple questions from what I've found so far.

First, is there a chance we'll get an auto-calc, or at least a form-fillable version of the Carcosa Investigator sheet, as well as the maps and penitents? SImilar to the backstory sheet from the Guide to Character Creation.

Second, on one playthrough of Disturbia, the player almost died and through the following process was told Explore starting from the Theater. It's not labeled on the map, but instead under the rollable table. I had not seen any guidance on where to place it, since it's not a stationary location. I ended up rolling to determine where it goes, but it would be nice to have some direction on this.

Speaking of the map, I noticed that for each of the three maps, there are 7 empty Inner City locations, but only 6 listed on the rollable table. Page 39 says that if you roll a result that was already on the map, you are supposed to roll...See more

Greetings! First of all, thank you for picking up the Guide, and second, for enjoying the experience it provides!

As to your questions, we will explore the possibility of making the PDFs fillable. They likely will not be auto-calc (that technology may evade our expertise), but they should have fillable boxes in the separate PDFs.

On your question regarding the theater, I may be misunderstanding the situation, but if the Theater was a rollable location I would recommend adding it to one of the blank spaces on the map (where it will exist forever on future playthroughs just like other marked locations). Will try to add clarification to the Guide, but if there are specific page numbers you could direct us to, that would make the process of rectifying this ambiguity much easier!

As for the seven spaces / six possible locations problem, thank you for identifying this issue! We were aware of it on one of the maps (i.e., Metropolis), but important to know it is an issue on all...See more

Thank you for the reply! Sorry it took so long to get back.

1.31.4 on page 199 gives the "Nearly Dead" result for if you reach 0 HP. It gives you three options on where to go depending on which map you are on. The one I referenced was Disturbia, where it says to go to The Theater, which is not on the Disturbia map by default, just in its rollable table. Looking at it again, I also notice a couple other errors with this section. The first one is the same as before, but with The Necropolis, where it tells you to go to a location that's not on the map, but a rollable table for that map. However, for Metropolis it tells you to go to The Larder, which is neither on the map for Metropolis nor on the rollable table for that map.

If there are any other page numbers for my initial comment that you need, let me know!

Just noticed that the bottom part of Appendix E: Penitents that looks like a ticket has all the information already filled in as from a previous character. Is there a version where this info is blank so we can input info for our current character?

I don't understand when you're supposed to go to 1.30 halls of Carcosa because literally none of the spaces (nor paths) are labeled halls of Carcosa. (on any of the 3 maps)

Many thanks for your comment! Earlier versions of the map included reference to Act I, Scene 30 on the corridors connecting the locations, so you would need to roll for a random encounter in Act I, Scene 30 every time you moved from one location to another. The final maps cut that detail, leaving this unclear. We apologize for this oversight, and are sorry for how it may have impacted your experience. We are collecting this feedback to correct the text on pages 11, 39, and 187 during our next revision.

Phenomenal work! Just want to point out a small error in the Necropolis map: the Larder appears on the list of Outer City locations, but it is already on the top right corner of the map. Also, on page 39, you mention that Outer and Inner City locations are differentiated by color; for clarity, it might be best to specify which color corresponds to which category. Finally, is there a way (like a Google doc or something) to notify you directly of any such issues as players encounter them?

Thank you for your comment! We are tracking these errors and when we do the next update of the Guide, we'll be correcting them. We'll also be incorporating suggestions to improve usability, such as making it clearer which colors are associated with Outer and Inner City locations. Please continue to report any errors here, or by contacting the author at [email protected], who is maintaining a running list of corrections. Hopefully these errors did not distract too much from your enjoyment of the book!

In my 1st run-through, I barely managed to get past the Lake before I got squished by the Butcher. The 2nd time around, I managed to get into the Palace (eventually!) and out of Carcosa alive and sane. It was EPIC!!! I've just finished the Prologue for my 3rd run-through. Can't wait to explore more :-)

Loving what I've read so far. I have just spotted, however, that the opening paragraph of 1.3.3 appears at the bottom of page 53, between an already complete instance of 1.3.3 and the next passage 1.3.4.

If we do achieve POD status, we would make the physical copies available with or without the PDF. You can see the typical cost breakdown, which would be quite similar for this product, by looking at the other Heinrich's Guide, here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/385321/Heinrichs-Call-of-Cthulhu-Guide-to-Character-Creation?src=hottest_filtered

Is this an open-ended solo campaign with random tables, or more of a choose-your-own-adventure like the "Alone Against..." series?

You will find both random tables and a choose-your-own-adventure style format. The closest analog may be a legacy-style boardgame. You can see a playthrough to get a better sense here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1991665094

We will need to hit 251 copies before we can petition Chaosium to request that DriveThruRPG make the title available for print-on-demand. We would love for that to happen quickly, but we will have to wait and see if the Guide proves popular enough!

That's a shame, if it was available in print I would have bought it on day 1, since the other Heinrich's supplement (about character creation) is already on its way. Most likely I will get this as soon as its available in print.

For some reason the website is not allowing me to rate this, so anyway: 5 starts! Great work!

I was surprised by the replayability of the scenario, and the fact that previous choices matter in the next playthroughs.

Great lore, scary scenes, loved additional scene names. The second act felt a bit shorter, I was surprised how fast things escalated. Maybe It's just my rolls, but I reached the King in 3 scenes (entrance, kitchen, camilla).

PS: There is a small mistake in the metropolis map, outer city location writes that 5. Is a scene 10 Game Room, while the Game room is actualy a scene 5

Also I didn't find the "Rear" scene anywhere, so I used Carcosa Halls (where you roll d100 for random event) instead. Where is the Rear?

Thank you for the review, and glad you enjoyed the experience! Thank you also for catching these typographical errors, which we will correct when next we update the files. The "Rear" scene in particular, as that should refer to Act I, Scene 17: Secret Entrance. We apologize for this oversight!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
