100 Plants for Alien Worlds

This supplement contains various plants that could be found on alien worlds. Some are fairly normal; others are definitely not. Most would be found on habitable worlds but a few can be found in other places. Some plants have uses whilst others are dangerous. They can be used to flesh out an alien ecosystem.

Here are some sample results:

• Drunktree: Drunktrees are notable for their fruit, which naturally ferments whilst it grows on the plant. Some animals will eat the fruit during this process, leading to them becoming frunk on it, and others will harvest the fruit for its properties. When ripe, the fruit drops off the tree, then continues fermenting until the fruit explodes, scattering seeds at high velocity and potentially injuring anyone in the area.
• Faux Chocolate: An easy to grow, sickly-looking green moss that has, since its discovery, been exported to many different worlds. The key fact behind this is that the moss has a very similar taste to chocolate, but is much easier and cheaper to grow, and grows a lot faster, and is used as flavouring in many chocolate-flavoured items as opposed to using more expensive chocolate.
• Firesap: Sap oozes down the sides of this plant at all times, as a deterrent to predators and as a way of getting food. The sap is acidic, and burns the flesh of any creature that tries to eat the plant. Smaller things like insects dissolve in the sap and end up helping to fertilise the plant. Touching the plant with naked flesh results in painful welts, and the sap can start to dissolve the skin if not washed off.
• Fizzyplant: Fizzyplants are good at extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which is then stored inside the plant's shoots. These can be snapped off and dropped into liquids, where the gas is then released, carbonating the drink in question, which is a common use for the plant.
• Flame Tree: A tree with a very high oil content in its wood, it makes a useful resource for burning to gain power or heat. Devices designed to make use of flame tree wood can function much better than those that would use coal or similar, though it is a low-tech solution. Flame tree copses can be dangerous if exposed to flame, though, as they can completely go up in flames in a matter of minutes and start a wildfire.
