ARALSK-7

Prospectors of Rebirth Island

Aralsk 7 is a game designed for two or more players. In it players take on the role of scavengers who prospect for valuable loot on the weirdly-overgrown island of Vozrozhdeniya (aka "Rebirth Island"), an island located in the middle of the Aral Sea in 1970s Kazakhstan. Vozrozhdeniya is not just a hard-to-reach island, however. A former biological testing ground, its entire surface has been declared an "Exclusion Zone". But lingering bacteria is the least of the concerns plaguing the island; instead, its every corner was turned upside down by a mysterious "Event" that took place only a few years in the past. That Event, if rumors are to be believed, was nothing less than a visitation by extra-terrestrial (or extra-dimensional) intelligences.

Player characters in Aralsk 7 defy the prohibition on exploring the island for any number of personal reasons. Some come to plunder valuable equipment abandoned by the government teams who once studied the "Event", but promptly disappeared. Others search for the alien "artifacts" dotted around the landscape seemingly at random, strange objects that are said to possess immense, yet unpredictable, powers. Others come in hopes of gathering scientific data, to document the strange phenomenon occurring on the island, and maybe even inform the scientific community beyond the USSR to what really happened on Rebirth Island.

Scavenging And Survival

Scavenging is a big part of Aralsk 7. Potent, anomalous "artifacts" are what every prospector hopes to find on a foray to the island, but until they do, even minor junk can be sold for cash. Cash, in turn, allows the prospector to buy food, medical supplies, firearms, and ammunition to fund further expeditions into the "Zone".

Injury is brutally realistic. Each character has a "body chart" over which overlays (reproducing the actual cavitation effects of various firearm calibers) are placed to record damage. As the body chart is designed to resemble X-rays of the human body, the use of overlays allows a close approximation of injury and organ damage. Firearms aren't the only weapons with overlays; knives, hatchets, and the natural weapons of the game's monsters all have unique damage templates. Similarly, creatures with different body types (dogs, deer, even tracked robots) have anatomically-accurate body charts.

A Deck-Building RPG

Aralsk 7 is a game that combines elements of classical role-playing (including character creation and improvement through the accumulation of experience) with a unique deck-building mechanic. In combat, the actions a PC is able to take during a given turn are determined by drawing cards. These cards are drawn from that character's individual Action Deck. Novice characters will begin play with several low-value cards that represent panic or hesitation, but with experience players can customize their decks to get rid of these bad cards, add more of the useful cards, and even purchase cards with increasing power and utility. Through this players are able to design and streamline their decks, allowing them to approach combat with their own custom blend of tactics.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
