Discover who your characters are when they’re not dungeon-delving in this 5e supplement for the world’s most popular roleplaying game!

alwlspread.png

Explore what your adventurers get up to before, after, and in between dungeon crawling, from small moments of bonding around the campfire while crafting potions, to life events such as running a business, starting a family, and ultimately retiring… Until trouble comes knocking.

A Life Well Lived is a companion to Cubicle 7’s Uncharted Journeys, and forthcoming C7D20 titles. These lovingly crafted volumes combine to enrich all pillars of 5e gameplay, and give you the tools and advice you need to tailor your game to the specific tabletop experience your heart desires.

  • Discover who your character was before their adventuring days began, and how delving into dungeons and slaying dragons has changed them once they hang up their sword
  • Create a sense of kinship with your party members, creating bonds that tie them together and preparing each other for the adventures ahead
  • Take on activities in between adventures, from cooking hearty meals, to weaving entertaining tales for local villagers, to foraging for ingredients to concoct helpful potions and deadly poisons
  • Discover what your characters get up to after their adventures are over: Rogues planning a meticulous heist, Nobles pressing the flesh at high society parties, Dragonborn returning to the clan to carry on the family line, and more!
  • Create characters who can provide backstory, benefits, and complications to your players' lives. Who helped you become the person you are today? Who aids your current plight against evil overlords? Who is waiting on your return from adventures epic and perilous?
  • Create your own base, a place your characters can return to after a fight to recuperate, relax, and prepare for the next adventure
  • Find out who really pulls the strings with the new patron system! Discover the benefits, the connections, the red tape, and the reputation that come with servitude to a person or organisation behind your next escapade!

A Life Well Lived in the Media

Between adventures themselves, characters can take part in dedicated campcraft activities while taking a long rest or pausing on the way to their next quest, with the rules designed to provide new ways for party members to bond and reveal more of their own backstories - Dicebreaker

The addition of crafting a life for your character not only aids in making it a richer playing experience but also opens up a wealth of possibilities for storytelling and for the GM to use the past as a story hook in a more meaningful way than being told that you knew the corpse at your front door with the map from your village. - Beasts of War

Any plans on updating this to the 2024 version?
I really like it but I am afraid it might confuse our new players otherwise.

What is the intent of the column on the right side of the character sheet with a series of blank boxes with a space for "level"?

Hey Sam,
These boxes are spaces for you to include your abilities you get through levelling up.
So for example with a Fighter, at level 2 you will mark one box as Level 2 and fill in your Action Surge ability.

Oh, of course! I thought there was some new mechanic in the book that I had missed.

How useful would this book be from a game agnostic point of view? Would it still be interesting for somebody that doesn't play 5e but another fantasy game, like an OSR, Savage Worlds or Forbidden Lands?

Hi José,

A Life Well Lived was written for all sorts of different fantasy worlds, and with a bit of fine tuning it can work for different game systems too!

The Lifepath system is still a great way to generate characters with interesting backstories even if you remove any mechanical stat changes etc.

The Campcraft and Downtime Activities give players inspiration for how to spend their time outside the dungeon. With a bit of adjustment, it could be possible to translate this mechanic into other systems.

Patrons, Bases, and the retirement chapter can also do the same, using this book as inspiration and some tweaking to make the rules fit with another system.

I hope that helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
