Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne

Condemned to death. Executed. Yet somehow, you survived. Now you roam the endless tunnels of the City Below, the Midnight Throne: Ker Nethalas. Will your skills and wits save you once again, or will you join the countless restless dead?

Welcome to Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne, a single player dungeon crawler set in an endless necropolis. With the tools presented in the book you’ll tell the story of your character who, after miraculously surviving an execution, wakes up to realize that their problems have just begun, and that there are fates worse than death.

When you sit down to play Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne, you, the player, take on the role of a single character. Your PC is your avatar in the dark tunnels of the necropolis, and your decisions (and luck!) will determine their fate.

Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne uses a simple D100 ruleset to resolve all tasks. Whenever a PC tries to do something and the result isn't evident, or there is something at stake, you will need to perform a check. This is done by rolling D100, and comparing the result to the corresponding skill on the character’s sheet. If the result is equal or lower than the skill’s score, the check is a success.

Combat is a big part of what makes Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne unique: characters need to manage their resources while being smart about their choice of powers used. The opposed combat check makes combat unpredictable and will require your constant attention, as you evaluate the different options that will open to you depending on your luck and actions.

Ker Nethalas: Into the Midnight Throne features:

  • Detailed random dungeon generation, providing endless replayability and adventures, with an easy to use D100 ruleset that makes it the ideal game for new solo RPG players.

  • Meaningful character builds with endless combinations. Want to make a warlock that wears heavy armor and summons the dead, or a berserker that casts cold blasts and turns invisible, or an expert at hand-to-hand combat that can summon a shadow clone? These and many more are all possible, thanks to 100 different abilities, spread among 20 Masteries.

  • Tense survival mechanics, focused on the dungeon delving experience. Want to take a rest? You better make sure you fortify that room, or something will wander inside and eat your face out.

  • A unique bestiary with a wide array of undead creatures and other similar abominations, each one with a detailed action table to randomly determine what they do in their turn.

  • Hundreds of loot and gear items, as well as a simple system to randomly generate magic items, to ensure you never loot the same magic sword or boots twice.

  • An original dark fantasy setting, inspired by England in the 17th Century, and Spain at the height of the Inquisition.

  • Built from the ground up to be played by a single player with a single character. You are alone in the darkness, and nobody’s coming to rescue you.

Can anyone review the quality of the hardcovers binding? I'm looking to purchase but I'm unsure if I should go with the hardcover or the soft cover due to the amount of page flipping most likely involved for chart referencing.

They are like any other DTRPG hardcover: pretty resistant, although a bit tight, since they're not smyth-sewn (can't be done with PoD books). I've been buying hardcover books from DTRPG for years now, and they've seen quite a lot of use, and not once have they broken apart.

Yes, I had to take it down because I've uploaded the latest version, but DTRPG is taking a long time approving them. I'm hoping it will be back within the next two weeks, apologies for the inconvenience!

Just wondering about enemy scaling. It says "after level 5 or 10". Does this mean after you hit level 5 , during level 5 or starts at 6?

When you start a new character and unlock two masteries - does this only grant access to their passives or their Tier 1 abilities too?

Also, on page 87, Vital says "D4 Health/5L". Does this mean divide the results of a D4 roll by 5 times the character level? Or does it mean that it is D4 Health for every 5 character levels? Seems like the latter but is a bit unclear as written.

You get the Tier 1 Abilities and the passives, yes. As for your second question, it means you increase Health by D4 each 5 player levels.

Yes, there's one in the Blackoath Discord server! But if you wait a couple of hours, I'll add it to the download files here on DTRPG.

Wondering how containers come into play. I have looked over the book and cant find anything about a roll or anything for a container besides it being locked. Maybe i am missing something.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but i just had one question. When facing monster that has multiples and defeat them, do you roll on the loot table for each monster or just once for all of them. Anyways great game! A lot of fun with something i just got into!

No, I'm afraid it's a single loot roll per encounter, regardless of how many enemies there were.

I thought I ordered the soft cover and free pdf but turns out just the soft cover. Any chance I could get the pdf included after the purchase? If not, I realize it was my mistake, but thought I would ask. Thanks. Can’t wait to get the soft cover in the mail!!!

File version here is 1.2, but the changelog says there is a v1.3 with the following change.
Reduced the defensive bonus of the Weapon Master's Tier 1 Ability "Evasive Strike" to +10, down from +20.
Email received today states... Updated a couple of errors on the Exploration flowchart.
Is that in v1.3, or will it be v1.4?

I actually haven't uploaded V1.3 yet, since I'm waiting to see if I have any other things to fix, so the latest version as of today is still V1.2. The changes to the flowchart are independent from any fixes to the core rulebook, it was just a couple of typos, basically.

My hardcover arrived today. This is best as hardcover, thick enough to strain a softcover binding.

Digest size fits nice in the hand.
Very agreeable page use, easy on the eyes.
Text Layout is well thought out.
Contents well organized.
Nice art work.

A good purchase for the solo gamer.

Can't post a review (new account), so I'll put it here. 5* - lot's of replayability, dark & gritty (like Dark Souls video game), bit of an initial learning curve (for me at least). Author has more content for Ker Nethalas coming soon! Great fun for an afternoon, or dark evening. Couple of YouTube plays for getting to grips with the system.

Is the rules reference 1.1 the version of the Rules Reference itself, or the reference to version 1.1 of the main rules version which is at version 1.2?

Hello, DriveThruRPG shows an update on March 09, 2024.
The log doesn't show any changes happening on this date and the files downloaded are exactly the same ones from the February 28 , 2024 update.

Is there actually any update?

I'm not sure what the issue is, because I just checked the files and they are the latest version, which is v1.2. The updated changelog is also there, so it might be a problem with the DTRPG library not showing the updated files? In any case, they're all minor changes and fixes, and some clarifications, nothing game-changing. Do you not see a changelog file in your library with the accumulated changes?

Thank you for your response, Alejo. It might certainly be a problem with the DTRPG library. My original question was because I used the "Show updated only" option in my DTRPG library and it showed there was an update on March 29 (I had a typo in the original post and mentioned March 09), but when I downloaded the files, those were the same files from the previous release. There was no changelog file included at that point. Today it shows there's a new update dated April 1, 2024, and the files do include the v1.2 updates and the changelog file. The changelog file mentions an update in v1.3 which I guess will eventually be available. Thank you again for your kind response, I apologize for any inconvenience.

Not a problem, of course! and yeah, as soon as I have more fixes (I hope there aren't any, haha) I'll release v1.3, but as you can see all changes are rather minor so I'm pretty happy with the state of the game so far. Thanks for playing!

How well does this game play coop? The cover says coop but I don't see any specifics. If I wanted to play this with one other person, would the game work the same? Do we each play our own PC together? Does the difficulty scale with number of PC's? Are there rules for PC interaction or would it be up to the players to make common sense judgements? Thanks.

Hello! Yes, you can play it as a 2 player game, there are rules for scaling encounters and all that. Each one of you controls a character. It's a really small change, so nothing complicated to track!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
