A dieselpunk roleplaying game of action, mystery and mad science!

Tomorrow City was one of the cities of the future, built to usher in a new age of prosperity, seizing upon scientific achievements at the dawn of the twentieth century. Then came the War. Radium-powered soldiers assembled, diesel-fuelled nightmares rolled off production lines, city fought city, and the world burned in atomic fire. We survived, barely. Tomorrow City still stands, an oil-stained beacon of hope, part-refuge, part-asylum. Beset by dangers from both within and without, a secret war now rages on its streets. Diesel-born monstrosities stalk the alleyways, air pirates strike from the wastelands, mad scientists continue their dark work, occultists manipulate the city’s strange geometry, and secret societies plot in the shadows.

Tomorrow City is a roleplaying game of dark science and dieselpunk action. Swift and simple character creation and an easy-to-learn dice pool system places the emphasis on unique personalities and the momentum of the plot. Join the Underground and fight the crime and corruption at the heart of the city. Sell your dieselpunk tech, occult knowledge, and sheer grit as troubleshooters for mysterious paymasters. Hunt down spies, saboteurs, and science-run-amok. As weary sky rangers, fringe scientists, and radium-powered veterans, you might be all that stands between a better tomorrow and no tomorrow at all.

I bought this direct through Osprey Games so can't leave a review (cheaper there for the pdf) like others posting here. I'd give this a 5-Star rating if I was able.

The system is similar to the FU range by Peril Planet Games; a die pool of positive modifiers opposed by Danger Die of negative situational modifiers. I think this works well, with players encouraged to come up with narrative ways their character's skills and traits would affect their die rolls and the GM using environmental and other factors to oppose this.

I love the setting with it's dieselpunk & Art Deco styling, the old English style 'Ministries' running the city with the mysterious and manipulative Mother pulling strings in the background. The players can chose to work for or against the powers that be in Tomorrow City, but either way there are many threats hiding in the shadows of the great spinning city.

I can't leave a review since I bought the book from Osprey's page so I'll try this. I love Tomorrow City. The setting is a distillation of a kind of Dieselpunk / Art Deco vibe that reminds me of HG Wells's "The Shape of Things to Come" crossed with "Bioshock." The system is fast and serviceable, although I sometimes find myself wishing it was a "Forged in the Dark" title. I'd love to someday see more published about the setting, like a thorough neighborhood map or a rough outline of other factions of post-War 1984. I would recommend people pick it up if they have any interest in the concept.

The preview offers zero information about the rule set, character generation, or anything useful to sell me on this game aside from the table of contents and your list of inspirations for it.

Can you help?

I feel similarly, but after some searching, it uses the Action System that Nathan uses in Neon City Overdrive. It has a bit more detail, background and lore, but it's a similar system in a sort of 1920-1950s kinda League of Legends Arcane feel.

Hi Nathan,
I bought and liked the game very much, I was wondering about future developments: are you intending to write a campaign or scenarii ("jobs") book?
Thanks for any information on the matter.

The described system remains me of Blades in the Dark, is that true?

The dice rolling mechanic is similar in how it counts success, success with a consequence, and failure. They're both light systems using d6's.

Hi Nathan... I love your work, and you have generously comped me a couple of products in the past, so please take this as constructive criticism from a fan. I'm super excited about Tomorrow City, but I have a very tight hobby budget. A bit more material in the preview would probably earn you a lot more sales for this product.

To be specific... as someone who's familiar with the ruleset it uses, I'd like to get a sense of how well developed the setting is, the amount of art in the book that supports gameplay and character generation (what I see is gorgeous), what sort of inspiration it contains for running adventures, etc.

Hello! I'm really intrigued by your game, and I was wondering if you could consider providing more details about the rules in the description or perhaps a more comprehensive preview. The current information is a bit limited, and having a deeper understanding of the gameplay would be immensely helpful for making an informed decision about purchasing. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Hi there! We recommend checking out the behind-the-scenes articles from the author on the blog of the Osprey Games website - there's one on world-building, another on the system, and one on character creation.

As the publisher, is that something you could provide links to in the description?

What is the system like? Skill- or class-based? Single die, 2-3 dice or dice pool? Battlemat and minis, concrete distances, or abstracted theatre of the mind?

It's a narrative d6 dice pool system based off Freeform Universal. PCs are essentially a bunch of tags smashed together. These tags define what they're capable of and good at, as well as what gets added to the dice pool. No class or skill per se. Abstracted theatre of the mind combat.

You can check overviews of Neon City Overdrive, it's essentially the same system with a few nuances (though I'm waiting for my hardback to arrive to find out exactly what these are, lol)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the overview, Gabriel. I'm glad that you compared it to Neon City Overdrive. That's a great game and its narrative system works very well. If Tomorrow City is like that, then it will be very good as well for those who like narrative games.

Neither. Skills are based on "trademarks," of which new characters get several. Basically, you get a bonus die to an action that falls under one of your trademarks. You can get additional dice if an action falls under one of your "edges" (specializations, basically). It's a d6 dice pool system. The system uses abstracted theatre of the mind for movement.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
