Baptism of Fire

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Baptism of Fire is an OSR RPG set in the dawn of the Polish monarchy in the early medieval period. It is a complete rulebook and setting. As a setting, it is “medieval authentic,” meaning that it is set in our own historical Earth rather than a fantasy world, but this is the world as the people living in the setting imagined and envisioned it. That is to say, religion, magic, and monsters all exist and function as the paradigm of the early medieval world imagined.

The default setting of Baptism of Fire is a society that is transforming from a Dark Age culture to an early Medieval culture. Poland, in the early 11th Century, was moving from a sedentary tribal system of “barbarians” to the beginnings of a feudal society united under a monarchy. As part of the process of successfully making this shift, the Piast rulers had introduced the unifying force of Christianity to the land.

The process of unifying disparate people into a single nation was predictably met with resistance. But the Piast dukes were clever enough to make good alliances, including with the more powerful Christian kingdoms that had risen up from the ruins of the Roman Empire. Christianity would help cement a common culture for many local tribes, smoothing over countless ancient divisions and rivalries and legitimizing the crown. But while Christianity had many progressive ideas that appealed to many people, there would nevertheless be a great many who would refuse to give up their age-old gods and heathen traditions without a fight.

All of this was taking place in a setting that was wild and magical. After the fall of Rome, the population of Europe had declined dramatically and failed to grow for five centuries. Monsters, fairies, demons, and dark magic ran wild outside of the safety of human cities. The Christianization of Poland was also the taming of that land, purifying it of the dangers of the dark wild and bringing the light of civilization and its accompanying stability and prosperity. In the standard Baptism of Fire campaign, the player characters are agents of that civilizing force.

* A note regarding the use of AI art:  Only the public domain works of deceased classical artists were curated to derive the AI art in this book. The total body of work that these artists produced in their lifetimes (with specific regard to this book’s subject matter) was not sufficient to populate every page. Thus, to both meet our image quota and ensure a cohesive look to the book, specific prompts were used to reproduce their artistic style. It would have been nearly impossible to commission the number of images at the skill level needed from living artists without paying millions of dollars and waiting many years for completion. It took Michelangelo four years to paint the Sistine Chapel. If he were alive today, his services would be cost-prohibitive and the body of work in this book would be complete in approximately 1200 years. It is not our intention to use AI to replace modern living artists, but AI can be a valuable tool for use in niche indie products like this one.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EDITIONS? Very, very interested. I love the enrichment of medieval RPG’s with more historical content - it really grounds the game. More immersive, more atmospheric, and then it makes the fantastic/monstrous way more realistic and alarming when it does appear. I’m trying to decide between the standard colour and premium. Is there anywhere i can see or read about the difference - because it’s a large price increment. i’ve searched and not found anything to help me choose.

Hi Mark and thank you for your question. The premium version has an egg-shell finish, which gives the pages a very slight gloss and makes the colors a bit more vibrant. The premium version will "look" better than the standard. That being said, Drivethru's (and Ingram's) version of "premium" is not quite as good as it used to be a few years ago. The standard ink and paper comes out a little muted/flat. Unfortunately, I don't have much control over the price. Printing costs have sky-rocketed since covid and I make a slim margin. I don't know if any of this helps, but I will say ... get the premium if you can afford it, but the standard will also serve you well and I won't be offended by your choice. Thank you

I know, I'm sorry Rob. I usually put links in all my books, but we had a technical error (some kind of file corruption) that caused it not to function correctly. Attempts to fix it threatened to delete the master file. We were already way behind schedule, so I just ran with it as is. I do apologize.

Baptism of Fire is great! I got the hardcover premium last week. The book looks amazing and system itself is excellent. The setting is really cool and all the expanded material from Lion and Dragon make it useful in any lower fantasy campaigns using the L&D/BoF system. I'm very happy with this product!

Hi, Chris. Thank you for your efforts in accommodating us. However, the black-and-white version you uploaded is still in greyscale, which uses as much ink as the color version and is not printer-friendly. Additionally, it is twice the size of the color version and the text is unsearchable. What we need is either a color version with an option to disable the background layer for printing or a version with a plain white background. Thank you for understanding.

Thank you for detailing what we need. You said it more clearly than I probably would have. The publisher seems to want to accommodate our requests, so I remain optimistic.

Hi Jack, thanks for your input; it is much appreciated. This was my first attempt at making something "printer-friendly," and I was told just to make it black and white. Let me see what I can do this week.

Dear Jack & Jay, I have created and uploaded a new version of the pdf. I have removed the background and border elements, stripping the pages down to just black text on white paper. The images in the book will still effectively be "greyscale," however, as there is no straightforward way to convert a color Adobe PDF to just black and white (it may be possible with Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I don't have that). The method I used involved exporting the file as a "print file" (this is why the size is large) and changing the color conversion output to grey gama 2.2 (this increases the contrast a bit so as to limit greyscale effect). Regrettably, the table of contents is not linked (the color version isn't either). The file got corrupted and attempts to correct it threatened deletion of the entire book. Drivethru also lost my files and then ultimately published the wrong file after I sent them an updated one. Because of deadlines and marketing that had already launched, we went ahead with the non-linked...See more

Hi Jay, thanks for asking. The answer is ... "not exactly". Drivethru will allow me to create various different versions of the printed book and link it with the pdf, but it only allows me to create one type of pdf, thus why I had to create the Blk and wht version as a separate title. I can create a bundle if you'd like that would give you both pdfs (color and blk/wht) along with a printed book. Let me know if that's something you are interested in and what type of printed book you want? Hard cover, soft cover, premium or standard, etc.

That's really odd. Other titles I have purchased on DT have included multiple versions of the title, usually a high res version and a printer friendly version.

Yes, that's what I just said ... we have six versions of the book already. However, a title can only have one version of the pdf that can be linked to or bundled with the print books. I created a second title to accommodate the black and white pdf. But that black and white pdf is not directly linked or bundled with the other color print versions. You can either buy the black and white version separately or you can tell me what print version you are interested in and I will create a new bundle with that book and the black/white pdf.

You can add the B&W version as an extra file to the colour PDF, I think that is what they are saying. This is done in the same way as adding extra maps, character sheets etc.

Yes, that's exactly what I am saying. Other products (under other publishers) have been able to have multiple pdf versions in a single product, so if DT is saying you can't there must be some missed communication in there somewhere.

As for myself, I'm not interested in buying the printed book (any version), but having both versions of the file in pdf would be great. However, I'm not willing to purchase each of those seperately.

Yeah, over the years I've gotten more than 8 thousand titles here on drivethru and this is the first time I've seen someone charge $$$$ for a printerfriendly version.

I could be wrong, there may be other publishers that do/have done this, but it's not been with anything I've bought.

If your intent was to give pundit's detractors more ammunition, I do believe you have succeeded.

I will see what I can do. However, in my experience, it is not possible to have multiple different types of PDF attached to a single POD book without creating a "bundle" for every conceivable variation. When a creator clicks on the "add new format" button on drivethru's publisher panel it only gives printed options, not pdf. The edit title button allows me to switch between either color pdf or blk/wht but not both. I have sent a letter to the drive-thru staff about this. If it is possible to do as you requested I will. Thanks.

A pdf question.

The book looks amazing, the artwork and page background are great. However, if I tried to print something (say the classes for a hand out to my players during character creation etc) with the page background, it would crush my printer/ink.

Is there a printer friendly version ?

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. A printer-friendly version would mean (I assume) a black & white version, and we do not currently offer that. I will be out of town this weekend, but when I get back I'll look into finding a solution for you. Thanks for your support.

Christopher. Thanks for the reply. Black & white or a layering option on the main book to turn off the page background or something. I'm not an Adobe expert by any means.
Hope you had a good weekend. It is no rush what so ever.
Again, this is a beautiful book and great game system. I am liking the simplicity of it, the reverse of the 5e HP bloat and power creep.
I really like the 'cleric' magic, but I am having to work at bending my head around the mage type magic (v the normal D&D spell system).
Again thanks for the reply and for the great book !

I have created and uploaded a black-and-white version to Drivethru. It is its own title (separate from the reg BOF title) and is only offered in PDF format. Just look for Baptism of Fire Black and White. I also priced it lower than the color version at $9.99. I hope this works for you. Enjoy!

On page 5 (PDF lage 12), at the end of the Civilization is Survival section, it says "...A GM planning to run Lion & Dragon as a medieval-authentic campaign..." was the reference to Lion and Dragon intentional?

Hello Wim H., I'll have to ask the author. However, my suspicion is NO; it was not intentional and should probably be referring to the Baptism of Fire setting instead of Lion & Dragon (although that bit of advice on gameplay seems universal if you ask me).

Hello Marek, Yes, it is similar to Lion & Dragon. Here is the author's response to a similar question:

I had to confer with the author (I'm just the publisher).
Here is his answer: It is very similar but could be seen as an "expanded edition" of Lion & Dragon. The core rules are the same in the two games therefore entirely compatible, but this ruleset adds a number of rules that are not present in the original L&D book. Some of these expanded rules come from the Old School Companion 1, and some of them are entirely new, including that the bestiary is extremely different with many new Slavic monsters, there are a wide variety of new treasures and magic items, very expanded wilderness encounter tables, slightly expanded grappling rules, several new magical techniques; and the one major rule change is that the cleric has now been replaced with two religious classes (the Holy man, and Holy Warrior). That is in addition to the specifically Slavic classes, like...See more

Hi Paulo and thanks Ivan. "Premium" paper has an egg-shell finish and the inks used are a bit more vibrant. Standard comes out a little dull, but is the more economical version. We do not offer a black & white version because we felt the artwork would not look good. Both the standard and premium come with free pdfs, which has the best image quality.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
