THE CHRONICLES OF FUTURE EARTH

A COSMIC FANTASY ROLEPLAYING GAME IN THE POST-HISTORICAL AGE

PLAYER'S GUIDE

"Everything a Player Needs to Play!"

"In the last centuries of the Fifth Cycliad, a great malaise
descended on the lands of humankind. From the edges of reality,
ancient enemies began to tear at the slumbering civilisations
of Earth, and to feast on their decaying, rotting flesh. And all
around arose a cry for heroes, to stand against the dying of the
light and save the world from the sins of its past!"

The Chronicles of Future Earth is a cosmic fantasy roleplaying game set in the far, far future of planet Earth. A game of sorcery and demons, fallen civilisations and ancient technologies, monsters, mysteries, and mind-shattering dimensions. This Player’s Guide provides all you need to create and play characters in this fantastic and fascinating world. Together with its companion volumes, the Guide to Future Earth and the Chronicler’s Guide, it uses the Cosmic Fate system, a new incarnation of the Fate Core system, to bring you a deep, original, and action-packed game.

This Player's Guide contains:

  • Full rules for play, including actions, combat, advancement, and relationships;
  • Detailed character generation, with many homelands and kindreds, including the Jeniri "Cousins of Humankind" and the Esteri "Not-Humans of Earth";
  • Maps of the Venerable Autocracy and the Provinces of Hivernium;
  • Rules for magic and mysticism, including cantrips, divine magic, and sorcery;
  • Detailed equipment lists;
  • An introduction to the Springtide Civilisations;
  • And much, much more!

Some said it was the end of days. Some said it was only the
beginning. These adventures tell the history of that time to come.
These are the Chronicles of Future Earth...

I also regret not backing the KS for this! Is there a traditional print version of it available somewhere? Or is it POD only?

EDIT: Nevermind, just read an update on the KS page that apparently traditional printing copies will only be available after all 3 books are complete.

Hi Leo - yes, DriveThru POD is our print strategy as we release the core books this year. There may be an offset print-run at some point in the future, particularly for KS fulfilment, but we're seeing how the financials pan out, and right now DT POD is where it's at - these days it makes sense for small publishers on so many levels, and helps gamers on the shipping side too. I'm loving my own hard copies, DriveThru has come a long way IMHO. Thank you for supporting The Chronicles of Future Earth!
Best, Sarah

I would have been much more excited about backing the KS and getting this book, if it were basically any other rules set than Fate. Loved the BRP version and still have it.

I bit the bullet. Still not a huge fan of Fate. But the fluff is as awesome as the older version with more
Added in. Might review it soon-ish but have to get some time to collate all of my thoughts so far and after a more thorough read.

Very cool, Edward, and thank you for taking the plunge! I hope you might find some similarities in game play vibe and spirit between the Cosmic Fate and BRP versions - with the new system, we've moved Fate Core in a much more gritty, lethal, and also more epic direction, and around the table it preserves a lot of the "game reality" feel of the BRP version, with the addition of Fate's fractal awesomeness (the Relationships rules in particular are where this shines).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! And yes reviews are wonderfully welcome, and help spread the word! Thank you!

(BTW we're also actively discussing Chronicles at RPG.net and of course over at the Typhon Games discord, and have a regular line of releases set up.)

This has been one of my most eagerly awaited games, and it's absolutely lived up to my expectations. I can't wait for the next two volumes!

Thank you so much for posting, that, Paul, you've made my day! I'm so glad you're enjoying The Chronicles of Future Earth - I'm very excited for our next releases too! We should also have the new updated version of SWALLOWER OF SOULS in the next few weeks, which you can play with the Player's Guide for a whole bunch of expanded options. Thanks again!

(BTW - if the spirit takes you, please think about leaving a Rating or a Review, either here or elsewhere. That stuff is gold - we're keen to spread the word as far and as wide as possible. (y) :) )

Thank you so much, Graham, it's very encouraging to get great feedback! Yes, Mindjammer and all our games are coming back online and fitting into our revamped publication schedule. We're focussing on getting Chronicles out the door right now, but there's much more to come across all the game lines. Thank you for your support!

Hi everyone.

Just a practical question before you buy this book: will it be translated into French?

We currently don't have a licensee for a French version. It's certainly possible in the future, but there are no plans to do so at the moment.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Well... we'll have to be patient then.
In the meantime, we'll play in English. Laughs.
Congratulations, once again, on this excellent book.

Hello. I've just started reading and... I'm a fan, fan, fan. I'm not a big fan of 'Kickstarters', but I have to admit that I would have jumped at this one.
Like others here before me, I can't wait for Le Meneur's book to be published. When it is, I'll be buying the 'paper' versions of the whole range (as I did with Mindjammer). I don't have the courage to wait for the French versions.
I'm only at the very beginning, but I don't know why, I feel a strong inspiration from Gene Wolfe (l'ombre du Bourreau). So it's made me want to finally dive into this saga. For that alone: thank you.
I'll get back to my reading.

Thank you for those wonderful words, Legros! All those far future dying earth tales are so wonderful, aren't they? Have you read Clarke Ashton Smith's Zothique tales, and also M. John Harrison's "The Pastel City"? Such amazing atmospheres. Plus of course the artwork of Bruce Pennington. I bathe in that stuff! :D

Apart from using the Fate Core game system, how does the content differ from the Basic Roleplaying version?

HI Shane - it's the same setting, but much, much deeper. The BRP booklet was just a short taster, but the new RPG covers much more of the Springtide Civilisations, presents many more kindreds, cultures, critters, and a lot more gazetteer, history, temples, magic, artefacts. It's Very much bigger and richer. You can see the contents page in the preview PDF on this page and compare with the BRP version for an idea.

All the best,

Sarah

Will the companions be available soon? I'm interested in playing this, but I think that without the other books it will be too limited? Do I need the other books to have other magical schools?

HI Marcos,

The Guide to Future Earth is scheduled to go into layout at the end of June, and the Chronicler's Guide at the end of September. Give each a couple of months to go through layout, proofreading, print proofing, and so on.

To be honest, you can totally play with just the Player's Guide. The GM would need to be creating adversaries for adventures, but there are enough kindreds, cultures, backgrounds, occupations, and so on to provide lots of scenario hooks and ideas (see my comment below for more).

There's a *lot* of magic in the Player's Guide. The Guide to Future Earth will provide complete temple write-ups for the Gods of the Great Compact plus more sorcery schools.

All the best,

Sarah

Is the game playable with just the player's guide at this time? E.g., are their some adversaries in the book, rules explanations on how to play, etc.
Thanks

Hi there Doug - thanks for your query! Yes, absolutely, you can play with just the Player's Guide. Although there isn't a bestiary in the PG, there's ample scope for a GM / Chronicler to create and play adversaries (there are many kindreds, cultures, and occupations given which lend themselves to this), and of course you have all the rules you need to play.

For example, you could create adventures involving Tung Mai mantis people renegades, either deserters from Tellisan's Legion of Hahaggassh Bloodied of Charn, or agents from the Tung Mai lands around Moritan and the Barren Coast. You could venture against the P'Tek maggot people up in Kastalon, either fighting bandits and raiders or trying delicate negotiations with traders and servitors from the Tyrant Queendom of Night. You could rescue hapless victims from slaver caravans, organise heists on the towers of evil sorcerers. You could even uncover the sinister machinations of Void Cultists in the Autocracy itself, or aid the Che Kwa in their resistance...See more

Thank you, Doug! Regarding the dice and other KS deliverables beyond the core book(s), we're currently working out our processes during this year, so it's a bit early to say, but our intention is to do as much as possible (ideally everything, and in the correct order!). We'll be keeping everyone posted as we mark off the checkboxes on the list.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
