Ultimate Engineering is a comprehensive and ambitious combat sphere for the Spheres of Might system. Whether a character is a magitech engineer, stylistic clocksmith, or mad scientist, the Tinker sphere offers a sprawling set of talents to customize, design, and develop mastery over technology.

With five packages, Tinker sphere practitioners can customize and outfit themselves and their allies with powerful technology:

  • Computation: Program routines to assist, guide, and provide insight - or specialized routines and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Modification: Improve equipment directly, make it stronger, hit harder, reload faster, and be more useful to its wielder.

  • Transportation: Construct mechanoids - bikes, planes, tanks, and even mech suits and mobile combat platforms.

This expansion looks pretty great! I do have a couple questions though. Would it be possible to buy the PDF now, and then 'upgrade' to print on demand later by paying the difference? That's my only hesitation in buying right now.

The other is, there seems to be a lot of mention of equipment for sci-fi and steampunk technology, but is there support for just having some gear for a more modern setting? My group is getting ready to play an urban fantasy game, and it's been hard to find any modern gear outside of d20 modern. It'd be great if this would sort that whole issue!

Hi there. While I can't speak to the PDF and print on demand situation, the Tinker sphere and its contents are meant to be form-fitting to any setting. While there's not "modern equipment", there would be ways to reasonably flavor (through Tinker traditions, etc.) various options as being modern-fitting. I.E. various medical devices, grappling hooks working like modern zip lines, mechanoids functioning as normal vehicles, motorcycles, etc.

On a sheer, basic equipment level, you may need to design or borrow firearm statblocks, but for the rest of the arsenal, Tinker should be able to accommodate and fit.

Thanks for the help! I'll wait on the PDF until the physical book comes out then, I think. Unless I hear other good news there. It looks like I'll be having to make my own rules for firearms, since I've found an oddly consistent gap in third party stuff for those. But I'll almost certainly get this for all the rest!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
