Wight-Box: Original Medieval Fantasy Adventure Campaigns

Wight-Box is a clone, but a clone that is different from many that have come before. The premise of Wight-Box is to pretend it is 1974, and all we have is CHAINMAIL and the 3LBBs. How would we play this game? Wight-Box attempts to look at these rulesets, combing through them, and compiling them in what is hopefully a true and authentic way to 0e that is easy to understand.

I had to change this from Pay what you want to a flat $1.50 for the PDF. Otherwise I had to make a second listing for the Physical Books. The PDF is still 100% free on my own website! So go check it out!

This game has:

  • The classic three classes of Cleric, Fighting-Man, and Magic-User.
  • The classic spells.
  • Weapon Class based on speed and size.
  • Weapon vs Armor/AC tables.
  • Dungeon Generator
  • Hex Generator
  • Other Oracles

This is everything you need to run and understand how to run a game like it is 1974 all over again.

Having v1.1 printed weeks ago, just wondering what has been updated or changed in v1.3? Is there any changelog to track the differences?

I fixed some typos and some mislabeled tables. No rules were changed or modified.

Next time I make a correction, I'll take better notes on that. Apologies. For big stuff that might need clarification or correction, I am collecting things for a very small (and free) errata document.

Rules questions: is there no XP for slaying/encountering monster (other than xp in gold)?
Is the treasure letter type for wandering monsters and lair?
I encountered 4 wandering Hobgoblins and they dropped 5 k gold... it seems like a lot :)?
By the way - Wight-Box is sensational. Having a great time spelunking around dungeons whilst listening to Basic Dungeon on Band Camp
Cheers, Kasper

Hi Kasper, it is defined in the "Advancing in Levels" section on Page 18. To put it here though: XP is primarily gained through gold, as it is only gained on a basis of 100 XP per HD of the monster itself. This is also impacted by the difference in level/floor of the XP as well, so if you are say Level 7, but fighting and gaining treasure from Level 3 of the dungeon and 3HD monsters, you only get 3/7 of the XP

Ben is correct. There is an example. Monster level or HD trumps dungeon level, however, too. So, say in the example above of being level 7 on level 3 of the dungeon. If you defeat or gain treasure from a monster of 5HD, you gain, essentially, 5/7ths the XP. So, a 5HD monster would normally be worth 500XP. But you are 7th level, so you receive 5/7ths of 500 XP, so about 374 XP for killing the 5 HD monster.

PDF is free (pay what you want) so don't feel shy snagging it for free. POD will come soon. I want to see if anymore mistakes are caught before getting it set up.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
