The GameMaster's Apprentice 2nd edition (GMA2e): Base Deck is a system- and setting-neutral deck of cards that can be used as either a supplement for traditional tabletop RPGs or as a complete game engine for GM-free solo or group RPGs. After more than a decade of refining and improvement, the Adamantine-best-selling GMA line of cards is updated and better than ever!

With these cards, you can:

  • Instantly generate NPCs with names, motivations, and backgrounds.

  • Create random events, story seeds, and plot threads.

  • Provide sensory details or loot for characters searching or stealing.

  • Run games without a human GameMaster!

And more--they even work brilliantly as creative writing prompt generators, and have been tested, used live, and lauded by gamers, students, and professionals!

Looking for the original GMA: Base Deck, published in 2014? Click here!

You can view the GMA2e's complete instructions for free by clicking the preview link beneath the thumbnail above. You can also scroll down to view the card overview image and watch a video of the cards in use (though, as of this writing, that video is from the GMA Cyberpunk Kickstarter, and uses a slightly older beta draft)!

On each card is a set of more than a dozen randomizers; with 60 double-sided cards showing 120 unique card faces, you can generate literally millions of possible adventures, all without having to hunt through a book or PDF for a single table!

Overview of the GMA2e: Base Deck card contents, a dense block of text with 14 or more randomizers for words, phrases, and images.

If you want specifics, including examples of how to use the randomizers on the cards, the complete instructions are available in the downloadable PDF preview linked below the cover image/thumbnail, but you can take a look at the overview above to see the quick and dirty version of what is on each card, and you can view a video preview below from the Cyberpunk Kickstarter, or see several videos from the original 2014 Kickstarter on my YouTube channel that explain how to use the cards to run a GM-free game or generate a story for a traditional RPG.

FAQ: How does the GMA2e differ from the original edition?

While I am still very proud of the original GMA Decks of all genres, they have always been a passion project born of tinkering–and so I could not help but want to improve them.

Everything critical about what they are for remains the same, but I have made the newest versions (designated ‘GMA2e’ for now) more true to my original goal: Preventing the need to reference tables or look up information in PDFs to make them useful. We removed the tag symbols and some more esoteric and abstract runes/images, and replaced them with 240 unique images to inspire you visually without needing to go do research or write tables up in advance. We also added a field with 120 unique but quickly usable 'scene types' to a bar across the middle of the card, making it easy to just grab an idea without having to interpret anything!

I’ve also learned a LOT about solo gaming and improvisational GMing over the past decade, watching the hobby evolve and continuing to teach Game Design to generation upon generation of high school students! As a result, we've added 120 unique 'stakes' to the Situation block and 120 unique character details to the 'Traits' block to help fill in a missing type of information, and we've also added 'partial yes/partial no' (Yes?/No?) to the Likely Odds block, so the results are more highly varied.

So while there’s nothing wrong with using the old decks and materials, and I still have a soft spot for the Tag Symbols from the old decks, I believe this new version is a huge improvement, and much, much easier to use on the fly, as intended.

What is included in the digital downloads?

Each GMA2e Deck includes both full-color and low-ink Print-n-Play files, PDF instructions, at least one 'Adventure Guide' (a collection of advice for generating adventures with the cards, usually themed around a genre), and a ZIP file of all card faces as .jpg files; while it may not yet be available for all decks, we are also adding a .jpg image of a 'card back' so that VTT users can apply it to their decks. In the same manner, we are planning to add A4 paper size PnP files as a resource for those who would find it helpful!

Do I need the separate 'Universal Instruction Cards' for this deck?

No! That product, a free add-on we developed over time, is only really helpful for the first edition line of the GMA decks, which require more reference to or memorization of tables of information. Since the whole point of the GMA decks was to avoid wasting time digging through PDFs and giant hardbacks to find just one tiny thing, the revised GMA2e cards no longer need them!

How can I learn more if I'm curious or uncertain about something?

COMMUNITY-BUILDING COPIES AVAILABLE! As tariffs strike gamers, and both my job as a teacher and the human rights of many of my students become endangered, this is a rough time. In the short and long term, printing costs may be increasing, but I will not be raising my prices except where the printing cost actually exceeds the sales cost of the product. While I initially made my products free during the first days of lockdown, since I do not see a definitive end in sight here, I instead make this permanent offer: If you cannot afford the to purchase my work, please reach out to me at [email protected]. While DriveThru does not have a 'Community Copies' feature by default, I will do my best to hook you up, no questions asked. We gamers need to stick together.

I already purchased the Base Deck, do I need to re-purchase to get the 2E version? If so, is there an 'upgrade' discount to previous owners?

Hello!
I actually did send out a launch day discount code set to previous purchasers via DriveThru’s email system, but you have to opt in to that, so it’s entirely possible you wouldn’t have seen it. The offer stands until the end of July, so if you want to take advantage of it, feel free to email me at [email protected].

err I discovered it too early it seems. Played the 2014 version the other day, we observed it was missing the "Yes/No, but" element to it. This new version seems to have it added but its not fantasy themed :( looking forward for when that is released.

Hi! Yes, we added some really important upgrades! The fantasy deck is the next planned upgrade, once we complete the Post Apoc Kickstarter this summer. Look out for the Fantasy 2e deck in late 2025 through mid 2026 (I hope!).

We'll be there early to buy it when its out :) In the meantime we are following a rule that when all 3 odds (GOOD EVEN BAD) share the same word, critical or not, its a "Yes/No, but" situation.

Supposedly, but I’m afraid that…. Recent developments…. Have made it much less so. If you want to check, add it to your cart and see what it would be; if it’s too high but you want to get it anyway, shoot me an email at [email protected] and I’ll see what I can do!

The file list has "GMA2e_Adventure_Guide_Cyberpunk" instead of the Base version.

That’s intentional, as there is no “baseline” genre neutral adventure guide, just the core instructions; the original 1e deck came with the Horror and Fantasy adventure guides, due to Kickstarter stretch goals, and so far the only 2e adventure guide that exists is the Cyberpunk one. But thanks for pointing out that this isn’t explained well enough in the page text!

To be honest, I’ve been thinking I might add all the 2e Adventure Guides that I eventually make to the Base Deck as well, to further support it being used with any genre. I’m not sure I think it’s worth making them another separate pack for $0.99.

Thank you! And yes, hopefully within 6-12 months! The plan is to tackle Fantasy after the next new deck, Post Apocalypse.

I didn’t cover that in the FAQ, good point! I should add that. In the meantime, you can read the whole text about it and see some examples in a chart on pages 6-7 in the rule book (linked under the thumbnail as a preview on the sales page); and below, I’m copy-pasting most of the explanation! Let me know if you have other questions about it :-)

This [map icon] field (entirely new to the GMA 2nd Edition) is designed as a map icon that can be used for either physical location mapping (on either a square grid with up and down, for dungeon mapping, or a hexagonal flat map, for world mapping); or concept maps, relationship webs, and similar systems of connections. The icon consists of a central cube or hex, with two to six pathways coming off it in one of six directions. This shows the directions you can go from your current location, or the connections between a node and the nodes around it. Around the edge of the circle you will see very tiny compass directions, plus a feather for ‘up’ and a...See more

Got it. Like it. Its new Icons are useful... and intuitive. The compass thing is nice especially if you are just winging a direction. Is this going to be the only 2E? I bought 1Es in almost everything. Cyberpunk just isnt that interesting to GM.

Oh, can I suggest the next theme. What about Pulp/WW1/WW2? I had to throw that out there. Id buy it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
