ESSENTIAL NPCs. With 344 stat blocks spread across 28 classic fantasy archetypes, this definitive compendium of 5e NPCs is the perfect tool when your campaign needs people instead of monsters.Challenging Encounters, Easy Prep. Not only will you find every fantasy archetype from Alchemist to Thief, each one is already the right challenge rating for your game. Every archetype has 13 different stat blocks across a wide variety of challenge ratings: 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 20. You'll have exactly what you need, no adjustments necessary.Classic Characters, Creative Combats. Each stat block is as unique as the archetype it represents, and higher challenge ratings offer much more than just bigger numbers; NPCs gain new abilities and angles of attack as they become harder to defeat.Unpredictable Players? No Problem. Your players have just arrived in town after some unlucky rolls left them wounded. They ask if the town has any clerics who can heal them. You improvise a temple scene, and things are going great... until your rogue gets caught stealing from the clerics. Then the rogue doubles down, starting a fight you never saw coming. Inside Essential NPCs, you have everything you need for unexpected encounters, no matter whose bad side your players just ended up on. Grab a Priest of Light and a few Templars, and give your rogue a fight they'll never forget.Filled with fantasy archetype tarot cards!(even more tarot cards.)

We're actually currently in the process of getting together a set of physical cards for these that will be released in DriveThru!

Hi. Does this one contain files to add the creatures into something like Foundry?

We don't currently have support for Foundry or similar programs, but that's something that we're definitely considering for the future.

Haha, I see you! In our first design runs, we actually did have unique features for everyone at CR20. But considering it further, we decided it would probably be more fun for more players if they got to see some of those extra stylish abilities sooner since in most cases, players aren't aware of an NPC being at the "end" of their CR progression in the same way they would be with a PC class. So they all still have a special high level ability, but in some cases get access to it several CRs early.

Seems like the Assassin (CR 20) is not quite finished. It has 2 attacks instead of the three from the CR17 version and is missing the unique lvl 20 feature (I love those btw). Overall the Assasin Archetype could be a little bit more interesting, maybe with more actions, bonus actions for example (hide, maybe throwing caltrops?), poisons ect. Also I believe they might be to beefy having almost as much health as the lvl 20 Berserker.

Thanks for pointing out the attack mistake! We'll have an update ready within the next few days to clear up any typos like this.

As for the Assassin, it was intentionally kept without a host of Bonus Actions and Reactions to keep its focus on its primary story task: getting close quietly, then eliminating a target and getting out. If you're looking for a more actively "tricksy" rogue-like NPC, check out the Thief!

(I'm the other one on the design team) I'll second that-- good catch! Pointing that out prompted me to do another quality check, and I found a similar multiattack error in the Templar. So you get inspiration! I'll post another comment here when the updated version is online.
Regarding the Assassin's health, we originally had them a little lower but then decided that they were going to be the stat block that people were most likely to use solo. Since a solo creature's health can get chewed through surprisingly quickly, we wanted to give them just a *little* bit of extra love in the hp department disproportionate to their common fiction.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
