Faster Than Light: Nomad

Selected Option:

Starships riding fire across the sky. Heroes and villains exchanging laser fire. Desperate spacers struggling against an alien monstrosity. Vast alien vistas, flying cities, moonscapes, mad robots, and first encounters. High-action science-fiction adventure that stimulates your sense of wonder. All of these create a rich tapestry against which exciting role-playing adventures can take place. From the urban and cybernetic near future to the interstellar far future, opportunities abound for playing brave heroes and dastardly villains and facing the universe headfirst.

These rules present a streamlined, through detailed and comprehensive, role-playing game suitable for a variety of settings. The primary focus is on interstellar adventuring, but Faster Than Light: Nomad (FTL: Nomad) also supports nearer-future cyberpunk and interplanetary games, as well as the intergalactic escapades of distant-future heroes. The key word here is “adventure” - everything these rules contain was written from and for the gaming table. So, gather your friends, order your favorite fast food, and prepare to play the heroes and villains of the stellar future!

Inside you will find:

  • Streamlined 2d6 core mechanic with dice pool components. Instead of rolling 2d6 with a series of modifiers as in classic 2d6 games, in FTL: Nomad you roll a bunch of dice, and choose the lowest or highest two, then add them together and add the skill modifier.
  • Fast but deeply customizable character generation. Distribute 5 points among 7 skills, choose an Archetype, choose a Talent, calculate Stamina dn Encumbrance, and choose a gear package. That's it. But this means that a wide range of combinations are possible!
  • Straightforward psionic rules using a simple skill roll rather than "psi points". If you fail that roll, you can't use the same power again until the next day. 35 Psionic powers included!
  • Streamlined combat, for maximum action at a minimum fuss!
  • Varied equipment, including a detailed collection cybernetics, low-tech and high-tech weapons and armor, pharmaceuticals, and, of course, many Galactic Age and Cosmic Age (i.e., ultra-tech) gadgets!
  • Streamlined vehicle combat, using the "chase" mechanic and geared toward high action!
  • Robot design rules!
  • Lightning-fast spacecraft design rules. Build your rockets - which involves design and mass trade-offs - then travel to the stars with them!
  • Streamlined world generation, focused on things players are likely to encounter, in both game-mechanic and descriptive manners.
  • Detailed starship, social, and xenofauna encounter rules!
  • Detailed gameplay and design examples for easy comprehension of the rules.
  • Elaborate index at the back of the book; fully searchable and extensively bookmarked PDF.
  • Full reference document released under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY-4.0) license, available for download in an editable file for anyone who purchases FTL: Nomad in PDF format! Compatibility license also included.
  • And more!

This product is as fast and streamlined as advertised. Stellagama pulls no punches with FTL Nomad. Practically zero prep, and your characters can be jetting off to the stars on heroic adventures in next to no time.
10/10 would recommend, especially for someone's first science fiction tabletop roleplaying game, or indeed their first tabletop roleplaying game full stop.

I just recently purchased the book and pdf of Cepheus Deluxe, and, before I invest in FTL: Nomad, I'd like to know how this differs from that?

FTL: Nomad is a newer, more streamlined ruleset using its own rules. The spirit is similar but the substance is different. Among the major highlights:

Streamlined 2d6 core mechanic with "dice pool" components. Instead of rolling 2d6 with a series of modifiers as in Cepheus Deluxe, you roll a bunch of dice, and choose the lowest or highest two, then add them together and add the skill modifier.

Fast but deeply customizable character generation. Distribute 5 points among 7 skills (3 points max in any single skill), choose an Archetype, choose a Talent, and roll for starting cash. That's it. But this means that a wide range of combinations are possible!

Streamlined combat, with only 4 "range bands" and simple damage for strong grittiness and minimal book-keeping.

New "harder science" spacecraft design rules. These are an advanced version of the rocket rules first published in Solar Sagas. Build your rockets - which involves design and...See more

Okay, you sold me. I'm getting the book and pdf, because I like physical books, and Synthoids, because it looks cool.

I couldn't find a review button, so I'm leaving my impressions here.

Everything you can do with the Traveller RPG just got easier and easier with FTL:Nomad. Except there are no Life-Path character creation rules.

The OSR community has started to refer to RPGs that "embody the spirit of old-school D&D, but focus on making the rules more modern instead of maintaining compatibility with other OSR works" as the New School Revolution(NSR), and FTL: Nomad is the Traveller's version of NSR.

In both fillable character sheets Stamina, Wounds and Triage sections (and Rank in the Art sheet) are not fillable. Could you fix this?

Late Edit: I meant Rank in the Base sheet, in the Art one it's ok.

I noticed that some of the Talent descriptions have Throw skill 10+, and while I understand this means roll 10 or higher, I wondered was this intentional or a hold over from an earlier draft since it seems to be at odds with the otherwise universal 8+ target with all modifiers being dice added to the pool. Also, given the relatively large pool of talents should characters have the ability to gain more than 1 per level since there are only 5 levels.

Please ignore the target numbers. The only target is 8+. You can, of course, give more talents per level, but note that each talent is very powerful.

Faster Than Light: Nomad is much, much more comprehensive than Starfarer, and, unlike it, is not based on the Cepheus Engine SRD.

Yes! It is, in fact, already in the production process. With luck, it should be available within a very few weeks.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
