Starship Operator's Manual

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Travelling is about the journey, not the destination, and few things shape a voyage across Charted Space as much as a starship. However, a starship is more than a mere means of transportation; it is also a home and a companion. To captain a starship is to be the master of one’s destiny – for riches, glory, or an untimely end…

There are many books that examine about how to build and fly custom starships, but few on what it is like to work and live on one. That is where the Starship Operator’s Manual comes in.

The Starship Operator’s Manual covers all aspects of life aboard the starships of Charted Space. Learn the workings of manoeuvre and jump drives, find out how to operate advanced sensors, and discover exactly what your role on a starship entails.

Includes a complete walkthrough of the Scout/Courier, Far Trader and Safari Ship.

Can we get some new ship designs in a New Editions of Traveller? The ship designs are freaking old school and look like their from the 80's! How about some more modern looking ships, like designs like ships from Elite Dangerous or something. Traveller is still rocking the Far Trader and has not updated their ship designs since the game was introduced.

Also, I hate that the aliens are furries like the Vargr (wolf Furries) and the Aslan (cat furries). You would think that an alien would be alien and not look like an earth cat creature or wolf. How about something original.

If you want to design your own ships, you can. That is what High Guard is for. There are also dozens of additional alien species - some of them very alien indeed - scattered throughout Traveller supplements.

I don't want to design my own ships. Nor do I want to draw deck plans. That's why I buy supplement books, so I don't have to.

How about a new book that introduces some new and better looking ships? The Far Trader & Free Trader are practically the same and look like a missile pop popsicle. The Scout and Seeker Mining Ship is just a basic triangle, which is weak. The Subsidized Liner looks like a fusion of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica that had a baby.

Can we please get some new ship designs?

If you look at a map of the Imperium, you will discover that you're not, in fact, the center of the Universe. ;)

I don’t get this complaint at all. The game system allows you to design your own ships - which means there is an infinite amount of potential ship designs in it. The ones detailed in the core rules are merely the most iconic ones in the game. There are other designs in supplements.

If you don't want to do your own design/deck plan try reaching out in one of the FB or Discord groups, there are several players out there (like myself) who enjoy making custom ships

You want Cepheus Engine. Either the system resource document or the RPG. It is (essentially) the same RPG (based on Mongoose's first edition rather than the 2nd edition) but strips almost all the imagery from it. So, you can simply imagine them looking however you want them to look rather than suggest they completely alter the core iconology of a game - one that has established itself in gamer lore since the late 70s - just because you think it's dank.

Are you sure you're playing the right game for your personality?

The reason the ships look like something from the 80s is those are the ships that have been in the game since it started.... in the late 70s.

If you want some newer ships and designs, the options are there for you to do it. Go check out the Traveller Wiki, and you'll find people doing that.

Why can't we have both? For those who started playing this system back in the 80s and 90s, I am sure they appreciate they design principle that the publisher has stuck with.

But for those who are picking up the system today, these design are rather out of date. Especially the concept that this is the "Scout Ship" and all the thousands of scouts ships all match this design. Even worse with the concept of the Far Trader. Like every single far trader manufacturer uses the exact same overall layout for a transport ship? Steps on the immersion. While I design my own ships for my group, it would be nice to have more non-isometric (dear god no more of this) layouts of some of the more common ships new GMs would use for their games.

The game has evolved quite a bit since its earlier conception. Being condescending to those to seek a more modern interpretation for something as simple as a picture isn't helping its longevity.

So I guess the people having fits over the ship designs are somehow clueless that companies besides mongoose publish material about space ships for the rules set.

K'kree are a sorta centaur looking aliens from classic traveller, as are Hivers, which are plant aliens. In my opinion, Hivers are one of the weirdest aliens out there. Then there's the Droyne.

As for why the aliens look so similar, blame it on the Grandfather and the Ancients.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
