Pendragon: Core Rulebook

What Kind of Knight Will You Become?

Will you fight to rid the world of injustice, or use clout and power to take advantage of those beneath you?

Knights shielding under an arrow volley

What's Inside

Pendragon is set amidst the glory and grandeur of King Arthur’s Britain. Its innovative mechanics drive the emotional impact of play as your characters pursue Glory, overcome life-and-death struggles, cross blades with ruthless enemies, and fight for love and justice in a world of brutal medieval realism.

The Core Pendragon Experience

A squire being knighted by their lord

The Pendragon: Core Rulebook contains everything you need to begin an epic adventure in King Arthur’s Britain. It covers the complete core rules of the Pendragon game system, including Traits and Passions, Skills, combat, injury and recovery, Glory, Favors, and Honor.

A knight, victorious in a duel, offers his hand to help up his defeated rival.

A Setting Guide

A female noble

The Pendragon: Core Rulebook serves as a guide to the world of Arthurian fantasy. The book includes a detailed look at England as it was in the time of King Arthur, the fantastical elements of the legendary setting, as well as the role of knights and nobility.

A great stag, a near mythical beast

The Passage of Time

Two nobles getting married

Pendragon campaigns are generational: you will grow old, you may marry, you may have children, and when you die (by the sword or the slow decay of time), you resume play as your heir! The Pendragon: Core Rulebooks contains rules for The Winter Phase—the downtime period of the game for characters to train, age, and even go on side quests.

Castle and Surroundings

Additional Features

The Pendragon Character Sheet

The book includes a myriad of additional features, including 6 pre-generated character templates for optional, faster character creation, special rules for Afflictions, Obsessions, Directed Traits, Ideals, and ransoms, a full medieval equipment list, and a Coat of Arms generator to make wholly unique heraldry for your Player-knight.

Looking forward to getting this soon. Artwork is amazing. I've always liked the Arthurian setting, and have never played the old version.

I promise you won't be disappointed! Pendragon is one of the highest-regarded RPGs of all time, and Greg Stafford (he himself a legend among RPG authors) thought of it as his masterpiece.
But, please be warned: as you can surmise from existing reviews and the discussion below, this is the CORE rulebook (emphasis on "core"), so you'll only find there the NECESSARY rules that allow you to create a starting Player-knight, the main game rules and some information on important aspects of a knight's life (personal combat, weapons, horses, advancement, etc.). Using this book, you can easily run all the adventures in The Grey Knight and (of course!) those in the Starter Set (but you could already run those using just the Starter).
For more advanced gameplay, more options, more information on the background and politics, etc., you will have to wait for the Gamemaster's Handbook, which is forthcoming (it will probably be published in the next few months, or next year).
If you keep this in mind,...See more

Someone in a Discord channel I follow spoke to Jeff Richard of Chaosium and asked why the change to Core Rulebook. Jeff said it was because WotC/Hasbro trademarked "Player's Handbook" back in the mid 2000's and Chaosium didn't want to open themselves to litigation.

Probably won't sway anyone who still hate "Core Rulebook," but there you go.

While I thing some of the commentary here has been hyperbolic and unnecessarily histrionic, it is clear that this book is really only part of a line of other books that haven’t been published yet. What also needs to be noted is that there has been a long wait (years) just to get this book published.

I think final analysis on the game line’s quality - when finally done - is likely to be very high, with The Great Pendragon Campaign its real centrepiece. However, patience will obviously be required for game collectors to keep waiting for fulfilment. There is enough to play with, however, if you also get The Grey Knight or the Starter Set though.

The system is mostly unchanged (one of the best of all time!) and previous publications are still compatible. If you really want a core rules book with a bit more setting material and other things like a short bestiary, NPCs and mass combat rules, then it is worth noting that previous editions of Pendragon are still available on POD. They ...See more

That approach is one of the reasons why we get less and less good quality and substance products every year. Because people will buy everything and will still smile even if this is worthless. Please read the description of product page in the store and check what of that you are actually get in the book
The fact that we can buy other books is no excuse. We should be able to run and play the game without them. Game advertised as core rulebook and (allegedly) containing everything required to play should actually contain that and this product is not (my biggest issue is lack of setting description and one background for PC).
Look at the 4th edition - that is the core rulebook.

Worthless, lol.
It is bitter for everyone involved when frustration completely overshadows fairness.

Yes, it's true, it's very annoying that this book doesn't contain everything you could wish for and it's even more annoying that references are made to follow-up volumes that have not yet been published. And yet, this book here is beautiful in every way. The design of the book's pages and the rules it contains are all first-class.

I've encountered a problem with the fillable sheets.
Whatever I type in, it becomes a £ symbol.
Is this an issue on my end (outdated version of Adobe or something like that)?

This is bad joke not a game (and of course I can't publish review )

You can create knight from ONE castle, not only one region - which isn't even really described, ONE castle
No setting description - one chapter about being a knight and society together
NPC, adventure ideas - anything for MG - yeah right forget about it
Recurring theme is "Buy our other unpublished books"

I've always liked and respected Chaosium games but this is example of pure greed and incompetence - selling incomplete game as Core Rulebook - sorry but core - means I can play long time using this book only - well not in this case.

Yes, sadly this book is a major fail. After all the expectations, I am dumbfounded as to how this failed so badly. They should have left it as one full book so you have everything. And if they were going to release this as they did all split up, the for crying out loud release them all at the same time! Ridiculous that we have to wait forever now to get the missing stuff later on.

Disappointment! Only the “players” book - no real GM material. Read that that book will take a year to come out. Not worth upgrading to in my opinion.

If this is a version 6, what are the changes between it and the previous v 5.2 rules ?

Minimal. Some of the skills are combined and there is a Brawling calculation for a stat. It is pretty much 99.9% compatible will material from all previous editions really.

Just a warning, there are no Battle rules or even enemy statblocks in this at all. It was originally pitched as the "Player Handbook" rather than Core Rulebook. There are some bare bones Battle rules in the Starter Set though. The GM Core-slated to come out later this year-supposedly has enemies, full battle and feast rules in it.

There are very good rules in here with a pretty incredible overhaul to the Traits and Passions system, as well as a very robust personal combat rule system. Just no mass battle rules.

Sounds like an incomplete game then. Mass Battles and Feasts are integral to Pendragon thus this isnt a full core book but should've retained its player's book name like they originally had.

Agreed. The mass battle in Pendragon was cool and useful, it's kind of important to know whether it is in the book or not.

If I'm not mistaken, it sounds like the publishers of this long-awaited sixth edition of Pendragon may have made an error in their advertising.

If this "Corebook" was originally pitched as a "Player's Handbook" and indeed contains the bare basic rules of the game for players to digest, then I agree that this "Corebook" should've been advertised as a "Player's Handbook".

Nonetheless, I look forward to playing this game online via Roll20 as a player. Medieval fiction is one of my favourite genres. And I look forward to seeing what kind of knight characters I can create and develop.

Methinks it's too early to accuse this faulty "core" rulebook of being, in Daniel's words, a "money scam". For all we know, this could just be an inadvertent rushjob. I've seen a handful of recent World of Darkness rulebooks and supplements (e.g. Hunter: the Reckoning 5e) being rushed in a similar fashion.

I also so a lot of such products recently - that is why for me "enough is enough" and I've decided to stop playing nice and smiling.

if such products will always be accepted and excuses will be introduced for their existence we will end with less and less quality and substance in games and supplements.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
