Echoes in the Mist is a story guide written for Regency Cthulhu.

Atmospheric disturbances caused by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia has caused a global catastrophe of famine, disease, and death:

“The Year Without a Summer.”

However, something much more sinister awaits the investigators.

A blue comet passes overhead. It brings with it Echoes from the void... and an irrefutable offer.

Content Warnings: This story guide is intended for mature audiences only.

Content Warnings will vary based on Keeper preferences. As written, expect

violence, psychological terror, suicide, and harm to animals.

Run Time: Run time is based on Keeper preference. We anticipate anywhere

between 4–8 sessions. However, Keepers could potentially condense the content

into a four hour game.

Investigators: A host of pre-generated investigators have been donated to this

content from other Regency Cthulhu material published on the Miskatonic

Repository! We thank these creators for their contributions, and you can see

more on page 63.

What is a story guide?

This story guide provides a plot (introduction, climax, conclusion), suggested scenes, a directory of NPCs, and various encounter/inspiration tables. However, full scene support, rules application, and most historical support are left to the Keeper to either improvise, research, or prepare prior to running.

We have included Keeper and player support to assist in investigator creation, including motivations, backgrounds, occupations, and skills.

However note: this content places certain demands upon the Keeper to include historical research and an activation of substantial improvisational skills. The story, while linear, is intentionally presented as open-ended.

This gives both the players and Keeper comparative and collaborative storytelling freedom. I highly recommend that Keepers read the content in its entirety prior to play to position themselves for success.
