All the Monsters You Need for a Valiant Adventure!

The Monster Vault contains over 400 monsters for the Tales of the Valiant roleplaying game and all the guidance you need as a Game Master to run encounters with those monsters!

In this book, you’ll find:

  • Classic fantasy monsters, such as ogres, dragons, water elementals, and giants.
  • New monsters suitable for any fantasy or science fantasy world, such as ambush hags, virtuoso liches,
    fey guardians, mechadrons, and robots.
  • New terrors from the ever-corrupting Void, such as voidlings, star crows, crimson jellies, and the mighty void dragon.

The Monster Vault also contains all the information a Game Master needs to create encounters with monsters, including monster roles and tactics, and it includes optional rules for Game Master Doom points and for characters wanting to harvest monsters for unique crafting and spell components.

I bought this PDF partly because the description mentions there are Harvesting rules for harvesting monster parts for crafting. However, I do not see these rules anywhere in the book. The section on Proficieny Bonuses in Chapter 2 mentions that they are in Chapter 1, but I do not see them there at all. Am I missing them somewhere?

Concerned about possible mistakes in ToV:Monster Vault. Example: Ankheg: STR +5, PB +2. XXX: +5 to hit, damage 2d6+3. Shouldn't this be +7 to hit and 2d6+5 damage? It appears that to hit and damage were not adjusted for the increase in STR it was given. There are many such instances in the book. I am concerned that these may be actual mistakes and will be printed as such.

Thanks for asking about this—the numbers are correct as printed.

You no longer need to add PB to any number in a stat block for monsters because it is already included. You can find described in the Ability Modifiers section on page 24.

Thank You for your response. I did see this note but was confused by it. I am assuming that, in this case, the PB is included in the STR of +5 (thus ST +5 is actually PB +2 plus ST +3)? If correct, it explains the Ankheg and others, but presents an issue with many, many other entries which don't seem to follow this format. Some seem to have PB included in their stat line, while others only in their combat notes. Still Confused.

The Monster vault consistently mentions dread effects but I can't find them in the player's guide or the monster vault

I can't rate this because I got my copy from the crowdfunding campaign. BUT, I can tell you I like it a lot. I will be using these monsters early and often in 5E games. These monsters hit hard, unlike the standard, pushover, monsters. So instead of upping the CR to challenge your players, you can just use these. And I will use the optional DOOM points system to give my big encounters a little more oomph.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
