Helluva Town - Quickstart

THAT’S MAD, FOLKS!

1930s, New York City. Helluva Town is one of the city’s secret neighborhoods, wedged somewhere between Little Italy and the Bowery – and inhabited by living cartoons.

An unsettling crowd of lunatics, hyper-colorful, liberally partaking of sex and gender, whose lives are potentially infinite and with one thing on their mind: fun, wacky zany fun!

HELLUVA TOWN is intended to be a narrative, rules-light game, designed to be enjoyed by both hardcore Gamers and those who have never played a single RPG in their life.

The lore borrows wholeheartedly from the vast, lysergic vault of US cartoons from the 1930s (with a couple of space-time liberties; Law & Order isn’t exactly one of the tenets of Helluva Town). The game is an acid trip through Looney Toons, early Mickey Mouse, Popeye and Betty Boop, with sudden swerves into worlds that quite happily stole from those colorful worlds: from Who framed Roger Rabbit? to Cool World, from The Goon to Cuphead.

Helluva Town is a homage, full of heart and nostalgia, to the mad geniuses of the medium, from Max Fleischer to Tex Avery, from Walt Disney to Segar, to their wacky kaleidoscope, and the zany characters their minds brought to life.

For the past few days, I have soloed my way through Helluva Town - Quickstart (40 pages, playing card system, free at DriveThruRPG). This includes a cartoon adventure which I did use. To solo this, I used Bing Copilot (AI). I used five PCs. The adventure started with the PCs (prisoners) digging up a field. The PCs find a six feet tall coffin. They are ordered to put it on a train. Later, all of the prisoners get on the train with the PCs staying close to the coffin. During the trip, two guards start beating on another prisoner: a devil. Keys are dropped, the PCs free themselves and help the devil. The PCs throw four guards from the moving train. Next, the train is assaulted by hordes of ducks. They are armed with dynamite sticks. The PCs grab two of them (dynamite sticks) and throw them at the link that connects the first railway car to the others. The explosion separates their car from the rest. However, it does wreck and the train becomes a ghost train. The PCs are now in a casino in Helluva Town. They are forced...See more

This new cartoonish tabletop role-playing game looks like a promising spiritual successor to the Toon series of pen-and-paper games which Warren Spector, creator of Deus Ex and Epic Mickey, worked on! I especially like how the artwork was drawn and coloured in varied famous cartoon styles! I look forward to familiarising myself with this game's mechanics!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
