Vagabond // Pulp Fantasy Roleplaying Game - Quickstart

The levels 1 to 3 Quickstart for the Vagabond // Pulp Fantasy Roleplaying Game. The PDF is free to download, and you have permission to print--but not distribute or sell--this PDF.

Drawing inspiration from Medieval romance stories, dungeon synth, and all dungeoncrawlers to come before it, Vagabond is a tabletop roleplaying game that blends old school practicality and modern TTRPG character expression. It also takes inspiration from modern Pulp Fantasy influence, with the potential for a Goblin Gunslinger to be delving a mummy’s tomb alongside a Dwarf Witch in search of Excalibur.

Things will get weird.

Vagabond is a d20-based "roll-over" system, laser focused on practical play, character customization, and lowering mental load. Fans have called Vagabond "compact" and "chewy" rather than "rules light" or "crunchy."

It draws inspiration from Medieval romance stories, dungeon synth, and all dungeon-crawlers to come before it. Vagabond is a TTRPG system that blends old school utility with modern philosophies and sensibilities.

  • "The system neutral system"; Vagabond is built for compatibility with most Basic/Expert and BECMI-derivative monsters and adventures. It's also extremely friendly towards system neutral/system agnostic content (such as Vast in the Dark by Charles Ferguson-Avery, and The Garden of Ynn by Emily Allen).
  • Potentially infinite leveling, with expected play in the 1st to 10th Level range.
  • Solo, Co-Op, and Guided support, drawing its inspirations from RUNE, Dark Fort, Dragonbane, and Ironsworn.
  • Deep, low-load character creation, focused on keeping your character sheet to mechanical weight over fluff.

The Combat System allows for traditional Guided play, as well as Solo and Co-Op with bespoke adventures.

  • Enemies do not make d20 rolls, as the Players will be rolling their Attack and Defense Checks each Turn.
  • Dexterity-based Dodging and SpeedAwareness-based Ranged Attacks, meant to spread-out the overall value of Stats.
  • Armor makes you harder to hurt, not harder to hit, providing damage mitigation rather than an increase to Armor Class.
  • Combat occurs in Group Initiative, with each of the Players coordinating who goes first between themselves and acting on a shared Group Turn.
  • Lower Health Totals overall, for even snappier combat with less calculations.

The Magic System is a Mana-based custom cast system that allows for a near-infinite amount of spells and casting expression!

I've been a 5e player since 2017, but I grew increasingly tired of parsing the paragraphs of text in every character feature, and all the idiosyncratic and illogical rules. At one point I wanted to DM, but I found all the lore implications of 5e's rule [...]

Watching the development of this TTRPG has been fun, and I honestly can't wait to play it sometime in the future. The rules of Vagabond are kept simple for ease of reference, without making things too complicated. The classes and their features [...]

I liked this title as it is concise. The character sheet isn't very "busy" like in other ttrpgs as races are 1/2 page and classes take up 1 page, a newcomer can quickly form a "game plan" from their options and the character can be [...]

Coming to this game from a background of not playing 5e for years and instead playing different games, I came in with a fresh set of expectations, and this game delivers and then some. It is simple to pick up, fast to run, and has a lot to choo [...]

I've been following the development of this game for over a year now. I want to commend the project on the fact that every design choice has been justified live on camera. The game also justifies itself in its writing instead of flashy gimmicks or mark [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
