Death on Cicero - Solo scenario for Ironsworn: Starforged

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Communication is lost with a small team of scientists who ventured into the sector's asteroid field for research. What could have gone wrong?

Dive into a thrilling cinematic experience with this one-shot for Ironsworn: Starforged—whether you're playing solo, seeking GM inspiration for "guided play", or looking to adapt it for other games. Fans of the Alone Against series for Call of Cthulhu will find it a perfect match. Are you playing Sundered Isles in space?—I'm positive you will enjoy this adventure.

Complete with a custom pre-generated character sheet and quickstart rules, you can jump right into the action without any prior preparation or knowledge about the game (you might also find the sheet handy to run a one-shot in conventions). You'll be playing within 5 minutes, even if this is your first contact with Starforged. Simply fill out your character sheet, grab your dice, and let the adventure begin!

Furthermore, a Sector Starter can be found at the end of the scenario so you can continue the story from that point (you'll need the Starforged rulebook for that, though.)

If you play digitally, section numbers are hyperlinked for a smooth navigation experience, and a fillable character sheet is also included. B/W versions are available if you want to print the scenario at home.

You'll find this work helpful if:

  • You've read the Starforged rulebook but are still struggling to start playing.
  • Your campaign is on standby because you ran out of ideas.
  • You'd like to be surprised by someone else's creativity for once, instead of always GMing yourself.
  • You just want to sit down, roll some dice, and have some fun, without having to read a whole rulebook first.

FAQ:

Do I need the Starforged rulebook to play Death on Cicero?

No, all the necessary rules are included in the Death on Cicero character sheet, which is part of the download (and also available for free on drivethrurpg.com)

Additionally, a “sector starter” is provided on the last page to inspire you to continue the adventure on your own—the next episode is up to you, and for that, you will need the Starforged rulebook.

Will I learn how to play Starforged?

With Death on Cicero, you'll get a feel for the game's flow and learn how to journal your sessions by seeing my example. You'll encounter common situations such as piloting, combat, and NPC interactions, and see the game mechanics in action. You'll observe when and which moves are applied, perform action rolls, and see their narrative and mechanical consequences. Death on Cicero is not a tutorial, but an interactive gameplay experience—hence, more engaging.

Will I know if I would enjoy Starforged by playing Death on Cicero?

A key feature of Starforged is that you can play solo (GMing yourself), cooperatively with others (sharing GM responsibilities), or as a GM for other players. In Death on Cicero, I’m the GM, and you are experiencing the game as a player (though you will make some GM decisions.) This means you won't fully know if Starforged is for you until you try being a GM yourself. However, as aforementioned, you’ll get a feel for the game’s flow and see common situations you might encounter while playing Starforged.

I’ve been thinking about this type of thing for a while! When your making a “choose your own adventure” type product for ironsworn are you mainly splitting the paths two directions success/miss and weak hits just add a quick suffer move but send you to the same section as success ?

Thanks for your comment (and apologies for the delay, seems like I don't receive notifications from Drivethrurpg...) In my experience, many PbtA moves actually have two mechanical outcomes, with the weak hit alternative adding diversity to the narrative potential but essentially just some mechanical penalty. However, several Ironsworn/Starforged moves (among them: Fulfill your vow, Explore a waypoint, and especially Pay the price) easily provide three outcomes (even more in the case of Pay the price, even if you don't consider the rolling matches rules), so you could open at least three new story arcs almost after each move, which would be unmanageable after a short while for a Choose-your-own-adventure gaming experience... I've tried to use that third alternative at specific relevant points, to create more uncertainty or tension in the narrative, and stick to the two-options approach the rest of the time. I hope this helps, you can check some examples in the file preview.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
