The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin

The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin is a clone of the original rules for medieval miniatures, which looks forward to the 3LBB for rules clarifications and overall compatibility, and can be utilized in "medieval fantasy" TTRPG campaigns of any edition. The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin pairs notably well with Wight-Box, a 3LBB clone which itself looks back to Chainmail for inspiration.

This work has over doubled in length with the inclusion of the "Fantasy Supplement"! Now when you encounter a group of 200 goblins, you can rally troops from the nearby village and actually fight them!

Fantastic creatures have been minimally updated for compatibility with the 3LBB, but are otherwise of complete accuracy to the original, so now you can benefit from things like the Halfling's amazing bonuses in ranged combat, or the Halfling and Elven abilities to become nearly invisible on the battlefield!

This collection of rules includes:

  • Combat at Battlefield scale (1":10 yd) and Indoor scale (1":10')
  • Optional rules for playing on a hex grid
  • Tables for mass ranged combat (archers, arquebusiers, catapults, and cannons)
  • Tables for mass melee combat (infantry, cavalry, and morale)
  • Playing heroes on the battlefield, and heroic duels
  • Tables for man-to-man combat (weapons vs armor)
  • Weapon classes (reach, multiple attacks, and parrying)
  • Weather and seasons
  • Undisciplined peasants
  • 16 Historical factions (including Spanish, Vikings, Landsknechte, Knights, Mercenaries, Japanese, and Chinese)
  • 10 Fantasy factions (including Bandits, Pirates, Desert Nomads, Dervishes, and Cavemen)
  • 26 Fantastic creatures (all of the classics, and not counting the half dozen variants of Dragons, Giants, or Wizards)
  • 18 Spells
  • Fantastic combat (and rules for using the more familiar Man to Man combat for heroic characters in RPGs)
  • An extended, full-page table for mass melee combat including all fantasy creatures
  • Sieges (machines, structures, mining, scaling, boiling oil, and more)
  • Jousting (with tournament scoring)

For the benefit of those less familiar with wargames, the following articles are included:

  • "Wargames and TTRPGs" - on using these wargame rules in tandem with your fantasy TTRPG
  • "Braunstein Campaigns" - explaining what they are, and how to create your own

In addition, the entirety of this work has been written by someone who is first and foremost a TTRPG player, not a wargamer. Though you may still have to look up the ocassional odd term (what's "abatis"?), explanations are provided to help others who are novice to wargaming. Examples are included throughout, demonstrating uses of these "wargame" rules with scenarios that come up in typical fantasy TTRPG play.

A few quick questions:

1) 2.3 had selectable text, 2.4b doesn't seem to. Intended?

2) The only mention of javelin is in the Light Horse line for the Spanish and a comparison to darts in the Mermen description, which is itself the only mention of darts. Are these just intended as different ways of saying "spear?"

3) Is "Griphon" a misspelling or is it a fantasy creature I'm unfamiliar with? I secretly hope it's the second.

4) Sometimes Wraiths is spelled as Wraithes. Both look cool, but the text goes back and forth between the two.

5) Dire Wolves are mentioned on the Normal Melee Combat chart, but don't seem to be mentioned elsewhere. Is that intentional or have I missed them under another heading?

Thank you

Hi Jeffrey, thanks for reaching out, I will try to answer all of your questions here! 1) This was not intentional, I will need to fix this in the next version! 2) Javelins are simply a variant of the Spear and Throwing axe, and can use the same rules as those. 3) The Griphon is a fantastic creature you are not familiar with... that was invented when I misspelled Griffon. 4) Ah, I thought I had cleaned up all the "Wraiths", I will need to review it again for 2.5, thanks! 5) You have not missed anything there. Chimerea and Giant Insects were poorly defined in Chainmail ("pick something similar to them"), and those were put onto page 23 "Other Creatures". Though now I notice, Wyvern's equivalent should be Dragon, not Roc. As for Dire Wolves, their main entry is... missing. One more fix for 2.5! In short they can be killed in Fantastic Combat similar to Wights, and they move 18", or 12" if a goblin rides on them. Great attention to the details! Please let me know if you have...See more

Fantastic! Thank you for the super prompt reply.

I did notice another weirdness this morning: centaurs are mentioned on the Law and Neutrality Fantasy Factions but don't seem to be mentioned anywhere else.

Will there be a print on demand version of this? I tried to find it on Lulu but was met with a 404 page.

Hi Andrew! POD for The Old Lords is my second highest priority, after getting the HellMarch Volume 1 POD set up, which is my current focus. Our previous POD source, as you notice, had to be taken down for technical reasons. Setting up POD here will require some necessary revision of the files, and proofing after that, so it will realistically be a couple of months before it is available. I am excited to get The Old Lords back into print ASAP! I do apologize for the inconvenience in the meantime. There is something nice about having something in print that PDFs don't quite capture. Thank you for reaching out!

Hi Leo, I certainly can! The recent update to v2.3 corrects a few oversights, bringing The Old Lords up to parity with the original rules. "Baggage" rules have been included on page 10, and Historical entries for "English Longbowmen" and "Levies" have been included on page 16, along with Point Values. Besides that, the combat strength of Giants was adjusted to be in line with 0e, and multiple minor spelling errors were corrected. Thank you for your support!

A missed opportunity to include metric rules and have options for smaller scale figures. Most of the people I play with use 10mm or 6mm Scale these days.

Hi Fredrick, thanks for the feedback! The original rules were made for 30mm-40mm figures of which represent 20 men each, and puts sprites and halflings on 10mm-20mm bases in comparison, hence my hesitation to go smaller than that in this work. But there's no reason you can't use the figures you have! If you'd like to use 10mm figures with these rules (changing nothing else), you can count each figure as 5 men, maintaining the ground scale of 1" = 10 yards.
That said, if there is enough demand, a metric variant of these rules could be drafted. I'm open to the idea!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
