First Edition Core Rulebook

The Player's Survival Guide has all the rules you need to play, including Character Creation, How to Play, Violent Encounters, Stress & Panic, Shore Leave, Weapons and Equipment, and more! Everything has been streamlined with an eye to being fast and easy for new players to learn. It includes:

  • Updated, streamlined rules
  • Lightning-fast character creation
  • Tons of new gear

Mothership is a sci-fi horror roleplaying game where you and your crew try to survive in the most inhospitable environment in the universe: outer space! You'll excavate dangerous derelict spacecraft, explore strange unknown worlds, exterminate hostile alien life, and examine the horrors that encroach upon your every move. Choose from one of four classes:

  • Teamsters, the rough and tumble workers. More versatile at first level, Teamsters can be anything from engineers, to pilots, to asteroid miners. If Ripley from Aliens is your hero, then you'll want to play a Teamster.
  • Scientists, doctors, researches or anyone who wants to slice open aliens (or infected crew members) with a scalpel. Become an expert in genetics or xenobiology - or protect your crew from deadly viruses.
  • Androids are an exciting and terrifying addition to any crew. Powerful due to their supreme intellect, speed, and near-immunity to fear, they tend to unnerve other crew members with their cold inhumanity.
  • Marines are here to shoot bugs and chew bubblegum. They're handy in a fight, and better when grouped together, but be wary when a marine panics because it could spell doom for the rest of your crew.

Why is there no print-friendly version of this thing that's not white text on black page? That really seems like a no-brainer.

I can't review because I backed on Kickstarter, but this is a fantastic game with strong design choices and mechanics that are both simple and surprisingly deep. Ignore the people wanting to judge the actions of a tiny indie dev as thought they were on the same level as Hasbro, games of this size are lucky to break even, they're not being "predatory".

The fact that Tuesday Knight Games has chosen to sell the 1st edition versions of their previous products (Dead Planet, Gradius Descent, and A Pound of Flesh) as separate titles, rather than just being an update to the 0e versions has made me question whether or not I want to support Tuesday Knight Games...and for now the answer is a resounding "NO!" I urge everyone not to support such predatory sales practices until such time as Tuesday Knight Games is forced to rethink this abominably bad decision and provide a free update to their previous product for all those who purchased the 0e versions.

This is such a bad take. An indy company that spends time, effort and resources updating and revising out of date work deserves to be paid for their work. This is not a predatory move, this is called business. A predatory sales practice is charging for book and separately for the pdf, or using a gaming-as-a-service model such as d&dbeyond. You can use the 0e versions of those modules and make then needed changes or because they have spent time and effort to make those changes for you, you can buy the 1e version.

You bought a finished product in the 0e version, paying for the effort put into creating that book. Since then they have put more effort into updated versions, but because you bought a version once you should get the fruit of their labors for free in perpetuity?

<br /> <br />Every other ttrpg company that charges for their product will charge for a new edition, or expansion, or alternate cover edition, or whatever else. Hammering a small publisher over this just seems odd.

I have to agree with Benjamin, had I known I was not getting a finished product or wasn’t going to get a free update when the finished version, came out, I probably would not have purchased it. Ker Nethalas was a good example as well as most titles where you get the free update. If we are talking about a complete new set of rules, that is one thing but just a reskin of something that was already purchased, it does feel a bit slimy especially charging full price for the finished product.

Jason - Ironically, I had grabbed a handful of third-party modules along the way here on DTRPG. ALL of those module have updated to the 1E, free of charge. The only Mothership modules that don't seem to be doing this are the ones that Tuesday Knight Games are selling. I stand by my condemnation of them.

This is a free/Pwyw product, you don't have to pay anything for this if you don't want to, 1e is a fully developed title with it's own price, it is absurd to expect them to offer the complete version/new edition for free, when you can get 0e for free itself. It is not predatory to want to be paid for your work, I think you just don't like capitalism. I would understand your point if this already had a full price, but this doesn't.

I think people supporting this move have the wrong take. 0ed was like an early access computer game, when you pay for it you don't expect to have to buy it again when they finish it. This is absolutely not the same as going from a 1rst edition to a second, where the old game is still available to buy in 99% of the cases.

Trying to crash an indie dev who probably just about scrape by as it is because you think everyone's got Hasbro money is beyond gross, I wish you were self-aware enough to feel bad about it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
