At the GatesAt the Gates Ashcan Edition

At the Gates is a high fantasy adventure game in the style of JRPGs and classic epic fantasy literature. It features magic as a staple of life, political intrigue, ancient mysteries, and high stakes roleplay.

On the continent of Everend in the world of Gaia, magic suffuses everything, keeping all in harmony. The seven nations of Everend maintain peace after centuries of struggle — a peace now rapidly deteriorating. In an explosive demonstration of power, one nation pierced reality and called forth daemons from the Void through the resulting gates.

Now, all nations rush to gain daemonic magic for themselves. As the nations prepare for battle, common folk go about their daily lives fearing the brutality of war and the daemons’ incomprehensible power. All the while, the Void spilling through the gates collides with Gaia’s magic, creating Void-tainted landscapes. The taint transforms wildlife into ravenous beasts that rove across Everend. The balance has been upended.

Everend needs heroes to stop the march of destruction and to help people understand their place in the new world.

Will you heed the call?

At the Gates: Ashcan Edition is an early access experience designed to introduce you to the world of Everend and get you started playing the game today.

Perhaps this preview should have been free and not $5? Want me to pay you to decide if I want to later back/buy your game… no thanks.

I'll admit, I was intrigued when I heard that Onyx Path were going to be doing a creepy pasta style game, but everything I see seems to suggest it's a light and compact reskin of World/Chronicles of Darkness, where you're playing the monsters, which feels as far from a creepy pasta, with its first person account of a mundane life being interrupted and a person's sanity slowly being chipped away until finally there's some terrifying twist, can be. Granted, sometimes the narrator is the villain all along, but that's generally an exception to the rule.

Also, I'm just generally not sold on the system any more. I love Storyteller/Onyth Path games for their fluff, but dislike them for their crunch. If it went the route of Exalted Essence I'd maybe be on board but I find the more dice I'm rolling and stages I'm going through to do things, the less immersed I am in the actual horror or action of the story. I know I'm in a minority there, given the success of the systems, but given that the ashcan is more...See more

This document serves its goal for me very well: Helping me decide if I want to invest into the kickstarter for the full game.

Unfortunately, for me the answer is NO. 2 reasons:
a) I find the SPU engine overly complicated. I have many other rule systems that do what it intends to do much more elegantly.
b) This reads like a kitchen sink setting of almost all past WoD lines. From my POV, each of these lines benefited greatly from unique themes and moods - while the rules were similar, the games played and felt different. This is lost by this kitch sink approach.

YMMV, but this is my impression

My impression is that WoD doesn't do crossover monster troupes very well (i.e. werewolves and vampires hanging out together), while Curseborne is built for this. You lose some of the depth of each monster, but gain more variety. I like the "liminal" and creepypasta inspirations, as someone who loves that type of horror storytelling and conventions.

It seems like they are trying to do a recycled CoD and pretending it’s original by putting new name tags on old tropes. “Vampires? No vampires here. Only Hungers, which … are … okay, yeah, they’re vampires.”

There isn't enough information about what this game IS and DOES to know if it's worth it.

Setting? Conceit? What the hell is this game ABOUT???

From what I have read so far, it is Urban Horror where players are the monsters. With a twist, much like other modern horror settings...of Darkness. Seems to me the rules will be a basic framework with which storyguides can craft their own one-shots, mythologies, or episodes. Hopefully, future books will give us fewer Answers but more ways to ask all the Questions.

Curseborne is a new urban-horror game about playing the 'monsters' in a dark reflection of our modern world. This product is not a full game but is meant to give you an idea of what the actual game will be like. Think of it as a preview of the actual game. Characters and pregens are given so that you can atleast try it out. The full game will come out later.

Is this enough for me to play an actual game or is more of a extended preview?

It has 1 adventure and 4 Pre-gens. Pretty much a one-shot preview if that helps. I think if you are familiar with SPU you might be able to extend it a little bit, but not enough for a full campaign, imo.

Storypath Ultra. Which is an update to the Storypath System used for Trinity Continuum, Scion, and They Came from. Ultra is used by The World Below, At the Gates, and the They Came From Anthology games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
