Something Sinister at Candlewax Cabin

A short & spooky OSR adventure about judgment and consequence.

Nobody in the tavern will shut up about it. A group of angry locals have got the place riled up about some strangeness at the homestead of the local candlemaker Lucan Rushlight. The gravedigger says the cemetery near Lucan’s workshop has been desecrated. The huntsman has seen odd visitors in the forest. Why, just tonight two robed men were skulking on the roads, heading toward the remote homestead. Some of the locals think that old Lucan has joined a cult. Others say maybe he’s taken to robbing graves and fencing the loot. But these townfolk all agree on one thing: they’re ready to march over there and put a stop to whatever it is.

Who’s brave enough to join them?

Something Sinister at Candlewax Cabin is a creepy side encounter or introductory adventure for a party of 1st or 2nd level. It's designed to be run in a single short and spooky session of investigation and mounting comic dread- ideal for a Halloween one-shot. You're gonna send the players to escort some hapless townsfolk deep in the forest, to investigate the homestead of a widowed candlemaker who's been bargaining with dark forces (though not the kind you might think). The townsfolk keep saying that old Lucan has joined a cult but they're completely wrong and your players are really gonna enjoy the little twists and turns as they figure out what's really happening. There’s really not a lot of treasure here besides a couple eerie magic items like the Corpse Candle and Ossifer's Sacring Bell, but the real reward is a group of townfolks who can become loyal retainers for a party that's just starting out and can't afford many hirelings yet.

"I'm a huge fan of these, these are awesome. They read so easily
and they're so funny and like, I just really love them...
I think they're wonderful and people should check 'em out.

"I feel like these books need a series name, y'know?
I need some kind of identity to assign to these things.

This adventure is part of a series of lovingly handcrafted zine-style OSR modules with intricate hand-drawn maps, intended to showcase unique and consequential locations for low-level parties to experience in the oldschool, exploratory style. All the art is hand-drawn by real people and always will be. My goal is to show off low-level adventures with some real depth and interaction, more than simple dungeoncrawls. They are generally compatible with Basic Fantasy, Old-School Essentials, Shadowdark, Labyrinth Lord, DCC, Five Torches Deep, and most other OSR-style rulesets. You can easily convert them into modern systems if that's your thing. Every adventure is thoroughly playtested with multiple groups at my own table so you can be sure that you're not getting some dashed-off nonsense here, these are gonna give you a good time. You can preview the entire thing before buying.

It looks small because it is. This is basically a one-page dungeon/scenario, designed with all the critical stuff on a single sheet. Screen and print versions are both included with purchase but seriously print it out, it's all black&white and intentionally cheap cheap cheap to print.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
