Slay is a dungeon-crawling adventure game for 3-5 players that blends old and new school sensibilities. In this download you will find a complete 9-page game of dungeoneering goodness.

In a sea of old-school inspired TTRPGs, what makes Slay so special?

  • Slay has a unique d6 combat system. Roll a red effort die along with your white task dice. Make a decision to either add the effort die to your attack or convert it to a dodge die and keep it to improve your defence. This makes every attack roll a decision: do you go in for damage but potentially leave yourself open? Do you play defensively even though you could potentially deal damage?
  • Tracking turns and light in OSR can be a hassle, so Slay streamlines this. Whenever you take an explore action or a rest your torch dies down. Once you're plunged into darkness things get a whole lot more difficult.
  • There are no levels and no classes. Create the character you want quickly with skills, descriptors and equipment.
  • Death isn't the end! Become a ghost and possess others to continue adventuring.
  • Anyone can choose to start with spells with the freeform spell sphere system.
  • The GM has a pool of dungeon points that can be spent on room effects, re-rolls or random threats. The dungeoneers making things look easy? Create a gust of wind that blows out their torches, or resurrect a downed foe.
  • Factions are key to the game, with each dungeon faction having a rank that the players can help increase or decrease based on their actions as they vie for supremacy in the dungeon.

Claims to be an OSR game. Proceeds to outline why it isn't. Thanks for your transparency.

Hi, I've noticed you like to almost exclusively come into comments of OSR games and scold people for not categorising them in the view that you have of OSR, which seems to be "TSR compatible" (which seems oddly broad since that covers everything from 0e to late 2e). I do think this is a strange use of your time. Nobody is trying to bait and switch or rip anyone off. For the most part you're commenting on sole creators who do this out of the love of gaming and creation. I'm sure people would be happy with balanced critique rather than whatever it is you're doing here.

Chill out ByT, let the OsR space be inclusive of new ideas instead of 3000 b/x supplements (no shade to those tho)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
